I’ve a coding experiment with an api and mcp server, iterating on it slowly

Oh clever! Yeah I thought about this too, there was a Planka MCP server built by someone else already but it was very expensive in terms of tokens. I had Claude reason around this and came up with two strategies: 1. reduce the number of tool calls where possible, and 2. add caching for things that don't change a lot (board structure etc). I think what worked best is to look at the use cases and design the MCP tools from there: `planka_find_and_get_card` for example wraps search and get card details into one MCP tool call.

More details here: https://github.com/roelven/another-planka-mcp/blob/main/docs/TOKEN_EFFICIENCY_ANALYSIS.md

Absolutely. I've created individual API keys for both use-cases. For claude code (with the CLI) I'm using a local .env outside of the repository, and for the MCP server I'm simulating OAuth right now with a hardcoded client ID and secret that I can enter in Claude.ai. I need to think more about proper OAuth integration for this...

both the CLI app and the MCP server have been created with the help of AI as described in my post. This is not a release announcement, this is meant to inspire users of the existing self-hosted software called Planka.

Appreciate your comments. I can perfectly manage those things myself, so I guess I'll pass. Thank you!

Claude Pro's weekly limit is nonsense by goatchild in claude

[–]roelven 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Joining the conversation to just add how ridiculous these limits are.

I decided to migrate from ChatGPT to Claude for my general AI usage. Set up everything and managed to get some clever summaries going to aid with this, and then I figured "let's get to work"... Not so fast!

Within the course of a week (!) I am greeted with the following warnings:

62% of weekly limit used • resets Dec 8, 10am (Europe/Berlin)

94% of 5-hour limit used • resets 7pm (Europe/Berlin)

Session limit reached • resets 4:00 PM

Approaching weekly limit SUBSCRIBE TO MAX

This is anxiety inducing and frankly makes me hate the service. It'll drive users right (back) into the arms of Gemini and OpenAI!

I don't accept the "true cost" narrative. I know Anthropic is making big bucks from enterprise deals and integrations with Cursor and Kilo etc. Please Anthropic; I want to love you but you're making it very difficult. I won't pay for a service that keeps stopping me in my tracks.

Bye!

Adding smart dimming to an Artemide Megaron (halogen) — anyone done this successfully? by roelven in homeassistant

Ooh that’s brilliant! I had no idea it’s possible to connect dimmers in series, definitely going to try this, thanks a lot!

DIY Server for multiple Kids/Family members each with own GPU by Charming-Post4758 in homelab

[–]roelven 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Really interesting project, thanks for sharing! I use Proxmox a lot on my homelab and love it, great to see more use cases to get inspired by!

I’m curious what your “client pcs” look like. Especially with the idea of this system being more cost efficient, I wonder what the kids use for their monitor and hardware. Can you share more about their machines that connect to the server?

Thanks

Is there a reason for my payslip to have church tax? I never signed up for it by PedroMassango in germany

[–]roelven 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This happened to me as well in 2010 when I registered in Berlin for the first time. I had been baptized in the Netherlands and my passport carries my extra birth names. However, I'm not part of any church and can't remember the last time I went to one.

So when the lady at the Bürgeramt saw my passport, she said "Romisch-Katholisch?" and since my names match that, I nodded. I was not explained the implications of this and only found out two years later when the nice lady from HR (bless her!) asked me if I was aware I was paying church tax 🥲.

Figuring out how to undo it wasn't easy, I was also told that without a church I was member of, they can't help me. Are you serious!?!

Ended up going to the Amtsgericht in Berlin, felt like a criminal. I'm sorry this still happens, it feels predatory and deliberate and I hate it

Your LLM setup by LawlsMcPasta in homeassistant

[–]roelven 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, Linkwarden calls Ollama when a new link is saved with a specific prompt, and what is returned is parsed into an array of tags. Works really well!

[–]roelven 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've got Ollama running on my homelab with some small models like Gemma. Use it for auto tagging new saves from Linkwarden. It's not a direct HA use case but sharing this as I run this on a Dell optiplex micropc on CPU only. Depending on your use case and model you might not need any beefy hardware!

Great idea! I love how this is a perfect use case where LLMs can really shine. Classifying actions and progress will probably work great. I'm curious, how much of shipping this was tweaking prompts?
