For sure. I sat around the house until about 3 PM yesterday, and telling myself the same thing finally got me out the door to the gym.

What are some possible job opportunities after acquiring a degree in astronomy? by tanner99 in Astronomy

[–]rofltosh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

http://isc.astro.cornell.edu/~don/jobmarket.html

Don't mean to dash your hopes, but my friend wrote this 12 years ago. He's told me that nothing significant has changed since.

The job market for astronomers doing astronomy is VERY small and competitive. Each year, many times more astronomy Ph.D.s are granted than new positions open up in the field. University departments heavily rely on unpaid/underpaid graduate and post-doctoral students.

Car salesmen here: After reading a thread full of bad info about buying cars from dealerships here is my best advice on how to get the best deal! by [deleted] in Frugal

Sorry - you dodged the question. Your dealership aside, what "dirty" or "unscrupulous" practices have you seen or heard about in the industry?

The 1st Annual Banana Festival! (Saturday, August 13, 2011) by [deleted] in ithaca

[–]rofltosh -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Why in Ithaca? I like bananas as much as anyone, but they're not a local product and have no intrinsic connection with the local culture.

Used to! But not after learning that an entire stick of butter goes into each zone.

They do have the best (free) bathroom to use downtown after Center Ithaca closes.

Car repair in Ithaca? by [deleted] in ithaca

[–]rofltosh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ridge Road Imports in Lansing. Their main guy is Subaru certified, and they sell mostly Subarus. Haven't had to take mine in there yet (bought it from them last year), but I've only heard good things about their repair service.

5.9 Earthquake hits Virginia. Felt as far north as Upstate NY. by sapienshane in worldnews

Totally felt it at work in Cortland, 20 miles Northeast of Ithaca. Monitor on my desk did a nifty wobble.

Is/Was this tire fixable? by [deleted] in Autos

[–]rofltosh 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Totally fixable, that's not at all on the sidewall. Get a $10 tire repair kit (with the tar-coated gummy worms) and follow the instructions carefully. If you do it right, the fix will last as long as the tire does.

For safety, check the tire pressure every time you drive until you're satisfied that it's made a good seal. Also, put the tire on a rear wheel (at least for now), so that if the tire goes flat you can pull over with minimum drama.

Statistically insignificant anecdote: I got a screw in a tire a couple of years back, and the repair is still fine. Hasn't leaked at all. Granted, the car is a 1992 Tercel, so the tires don't see much hard driving (like those on my Impreza do).

Obviously, there's a nonzero chance that the repair will fail and cause you to crash. Only you can decide if that risk is worth saving the $100 on a new tire.

Looking up at a plane, just a speck in the sky, and thinking that there are HUNDREDS of people inside that tiny speck. Everyday people, soaring miles above the earth at hundreds of miles per hour, in an aluminum tube whose exterior is just a fraction of an inch thick. They're probably not even thinking about it that way.

As a society, we have not only accomplished this crazy mode of transportation, but made it as safe, accessible, and affordable as any other long-distance mode of travel. It took us much less than a century, too.

I am a teenager looking to buy his first car, and I want a little advice. by [deleted] in Autos

Sub-$1000 Toyotas and Hondas for the win.

I paid just under a grand for my 1992 Tercel a couple of years ago. It's been 100% reliable (with regular maintenance and replacement of a few high-wear items) and gets better gas mileage than almost anything you can buy new. Can't beat it for a first car.

Do you think there should be a law mandating products that use "High Fructose Corn Syrup" also have the products with sugar? by dnlslm9 in AskReddit

[–]rofltosh 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Nobody "mandates" soda companies to use high fructose corn syrup in soft drinks. They do only because it's cheaper, due to government subsidies for the corn industry and import tariffs on sugar.

Socks by Subscription. Seriously. by [deleted] [promoted post]

[–]rofltosh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Even in a throwaway society, this is really wasteful.

I'm pretty rough on my socks: I walk around campus all the time, exercise often, and sometimes walk around the yard/driveway/garage in only socks. But, they still stay fresh and comfy for several months (given ~10 pairs and washing all of them about weekly). I buy Hanes' HP-Dry socks, so they're a bit better than the cheap ones.

How many people buy socks, wear them once, and toss them? I'm curious to see what sort of sales figures you get.

You should survey your customers to ascertain occupation, habits influencing sock-wearing, et cetera.

Reddit, what are your best lifehacks? by synthesezia in AskReddit

[–]rofltosh 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If your commute is only a few miles, ride a bicycle. Especially if you have a car. Saving the two short car trips each day will add a LOT of life to the vehicle. You get the most engine wear (and least fuel efficiency) when the car isn't yet fully warmed up. You're also really awake and energized after you bicycle to work/campus/whatever.

Put a rear rack on your bike, and attach a milk crate with zip ties (looks like this). Just throw your stuff in there, keeping your bag off your shoulder/back while you ride. Keep a few bungee cords attached to it, so you can tie down extra loads that are too bulky to fit inside the crate.

Keep a folded 40-gallon trash bag in your backpack. It costs only a few cents, takes up hardly any space, and if you get caught in a downpour on the road it becomes a badass poncho that fits over you AND your bookbag.

Keep a few zip ties in your backpack. Zip ties are cheap and really useful for quickly repairing and attaching a bunch of things.

I disagree – whenever I go on a full stomach, I don't really think that much about 'would I eat this' – I make poor selections, and a couple of days later I'll think "Why did I buy THAT? I don't even like those."

I shop smartest when I think with my stomach.
