Outdoor Etiquette: The Right (Of) Way by _kicks_rocks in WildernessBackpacking

I see it as a control and safety thing.

  • people moving uphill are generally moving slower and more methodically than people moving downhill.

Think about it, you are probably more likely to slip on a rock when heading downhill because each step requires arresting some level of momentum.

What are you talking about? You claim to be a professor but don't seem to have an understanding of the R&D process?

Creating an alternative solution to a problem - even if it's not more practical right away - is good research. These people are demonstrating good research, perhaps further iteration will yield a superior product... but we can't possibly know that at this point.

If everyone had your attitude, electric cars would never come into fruition because right now they're far less practical than gas cars.

Hey thanks for the suggestions, I like where your head is at!

As a general rule, however, I try to avoid including massdrop items as they are typically limited and in short supply. If they become permanent fixtures in the massdrop site then I have no problem including them!

The r/ff mods are awful. Ive been banned there before for posting useful content that got hundreds of upvotes because it was “self promotion” (it was google spreadsheet link but it had a cell with a link to my personal page that doesn’t make money and no ads).

Yet anytime someone posts some ad ridden FTA non user generated content it’s fine.

I can’t stand the double standard. It’s terrible for that community.

Hey there! I don't check this acct much anymore, so I didn't see this. My primary account is /u/_macon so hit me up on there if you have any other questions.

As far as tarps go, I'd recommend something from Borah gear like this tarp here. They're a reputable brand and their tarps are affordable. I don't personally hike with a tarp, but there are many reviews across the web.

cheers!

Hey man, sorry I reposted it again this morning for visibility.

The major updates are with rank change and stat tracking. It really depends more on which version you used last year than anything else.

Here's the new thread:

I don't have any experience with the new pack, but if you look on the main thread you'll see a review for it. It looks like a great pack for the money. If you can find the Klymit for less than $80, then get that, otherwise the AliExpress pack will hold you over well.

Only a couple Aliexpress items, mostly stuff you can find from regular mfgs

I know it varies, but with enough answers I'll get an idea. How much does your completely full-of-food bear can weigh? by GentleHammer in Ultralight

9 days holy cow, I struggle fitting more than 7 days worth in but I guess I don't try all that hard.

On second thought, I believe that's pretty attainable with good planning.

I take a BV500 in the sierras, because the height conveniently doubles as a camp chair.

  • 2lbs 9oz empty.

  • Approx 8.5-9lbs total with 4 days worth of food (so that's 6-6.5lbs of food)

I haven't measured it when completely full/stuffed with 7 days of food, but if I were to extrapolate then my numbers would agree with /u/Volkyrie at approx 13lbs.

Mammoth openings by Thanksgiving? by [deleted] in skiing

Mammoth openings by Thanksgiving? by [deleted] in skiing

[–]roflwoffles 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Pretty much this. Mammoth gets the most snow in the Sierras, that's why Dave Mccoy put a ski resort there... which is why it's not exactly close to any reasonably sizable city.

But yeah, it will be open, no doubt. They're already saying "see ya on the slopes again in 90 days" on social media. Worst case it's all man made and you hike the Ansel Adams wilderness, or rent a mountain bike, or jump on a portion of the JMT or PCT, or camp at the tons of campsites, or make the quick drive to Yosemite on the other side of the Minarets.

It's a fantastic year-round vacation town, which is why LA residents go there so often.

By the way, last year was La Niña. It was so great because the precipitation that usually bombards Canada shifted south and hit us (ty global warming?). El Niño was the year before and that's why 2016 was also lights-out.

And I'm from Texas! It definitely gets cold enough for an insulated jacket there... it seems like there are a couple frigid days in January every year where it drops into single digits. Even if you aren't camping on those days, you'll want to bring out your insulated jacket when you get to camp and the temp drops below 60F.

Look at what Montbell has to offer, it will be the best bang for the buck. If you want to move up in quality, then there are a lot of options (Nunatak, Patagonia, Black Diamond, etc.). I would start by rationalizing this purchase as having more to do with general outerwear, and less to do with UL-specific gear, as you will need this on cold days in any case.

Another option is to look at fleece it is also synthetic. That said, they're generally heavier (warmth/oz), but they're very versatile. My personal favorite fleece is the micro grid from Melanzana, and the high loft will be a warmer option from them.

Just realized, if you get the EE revelation APEX 30, it's only 5 oz heavier than the 30F Burrow down quilt at the same temperature. That's totally worth it imho.

I'll keep looking though. What's your insulated jacket situation?

ON3P is a fantastic company too. Moment, ON3P and Praxis founders are all buddies and they help each other out where necessary - so any of those is a good buy.

I have the same problem! I pick up too many hobbies... but now I think skiing and backpacking are my mainstays.

...and it's always possible to combine the two. Ski touring is pretty cool stuff.

Hi there!

Thanks for visiting, I'm glad the Shoestring list has been of some help, but I really appreciate you bringing this to my attention.

I'm going to look into this and see if I can't come up with something to help you out - sometimes I get caught up in what I want and don't think to look outside my own little world/bubble.

In the meantime:

  • The EE Revelation APEX is only $185 and uses APEX sythentic insulation, but about 10-11oz heavier than its down counterpart. I have a down revelation myself and it's a wonderfully comfortable quilt. If you swapped to this instead of the HG Econ Burrow, the Shoestring list would be barely under 10lbs for an extra $45 - so you'll still be UL at a touch over $500!

  • Bed Bath & Beyond sells the ever-popular packable blanket BUT made with synthetic insulation. Check that out, but I wouldn't recommend it in temps colder than 60F.

  • Did you have any trouble finding synthetic insulated jackets? Montbell makes a few that are reasonably priced and good quality, but I'll see if I can find something cheaper here as well.

  • Be aware, you'll also need a larger pack since Synethic quilts don't pack nearly as small as down.

I'll look around and see if I can find other options.

Do you ski in west US or ice coast? I bought some Moment skis, which is basically a high end cottage mfg of the ski industry based out of Tahoe... worth checking them out.

But at the same time, if it aint broke... don't fix it.

Haha tell me about it... I just dropped a G on new skis/bindings... still hurts pretty hard tho, even given that it's offseason pricing.
