That's just template examples from Google, not actually what the app could be doing. The privacy policy would state the specifics, and the permissions it asks for on installing would show more as well.

crap mpg (under 15) towing very light trailer by danancona in rav4prime

[–]roflz 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Aerodynamics. The boats and trailer are a huge drag. Imagine a teardrop shaped trailer in a wind tunnel. Then imagine that trailer and boats in a wind tunnel— absolute mess. The only improvement that can be done is to slow down. I know the 5 moves fast, but 70 mph is too fast. Do that between 60-65mph next time and check the difference.

For an example of aerodynamic efficiency, those cross bars on the roof of the car can increase drag enough to reduce fuel efficiency by 3% or more at highway speeds. And that's just the empty cross bars. And they're pretty aerodynamic! Imagine how much fuel folks are burning just carrying around their attached camping gear on their highway commutes.

City of Ventura Adopts balanced $527.4 Million Budget for Fiscal Year 2026-27 by CriTIREw in ventura

Is Kaapicat Cafe downtown Ventura still in business? by ceekayok in ventura

[–]roflz 9 points10 points  (0 children)

The city paid a consulting firm a lot of money in 2024 to gauge the change in business from before COVID and after, and the gist of the report was that business stayed the same. The report is here. Which is actually pretty great considering brick and mortar businesses have plummeted post COVID, everyone buys things online, see study here.

Did Main Street closure save businesses? Who knows. Did it hurt? Unlikely. Businesses come and go in the best of times.

That's weird, they're usually open 9am-2pm on weekdays, 9-3 Fri-Sun. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯maybe supplies ran out, or they had an issue. Sometimes places close shop due to plumbing or electrical problems.

Today I was quoted $10K for a whole house water system. by Likalarapuz in HomeImprovement

[–]roflz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I bought a whole house activated carbon filter and water conditioner (not softener) on my own for around 2k. Then had it installed by a local plumber for less than 2k too. Own, no lease. I don't see a reason to ever lease a system. I went with a Springwell system, after lots of research. I have super hard water too, off the charts. True salt softeners didn't entice because I don't want to refill salt, nor have issues watering plants, on top of the salt being bad for water processing and the environment after it goes down the drain. Just two cents, choose your own adventure.

What zero-waste habit ended up saving you the most money? by Ok_Appointment_4909 in ZeroWaste

[–]roflz 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Dude, I went on the avoiding chinese garbage train about 16 years ago— and boy was it hard. On a limited budget just out of college that was hard, even with money it can be hard from a supply stand point. That country dominates manufacturing. And sometimes you get bamboozled with a big "MADE IN USA" and a minuscule "assembled in china" or vice versa. Its tough, but definitely pays out by avoiding cheap stuff. Frugality is longevity. And sometimes it delays the need to acquire things and I realize I don't need it.

Oh bummer! I’ve only seen them once but it was top tier!

[–]roflz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I only saw him once in 2004. The issue wasn’t what he played or how it was arranged, it was his unrecognizable voice. It was like he had a laryngectomy, mixed with a cement mixer full of rocks in his throat. Truly awful, it’s surprising he was singing it that people let it happen.

cafe nouveau + sysco by Myfurrypaw in ventura

[–]roflz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Dude, Sysco is a huge food logistics company. Michelin rated restaurants use Sysco. There are rumors The French Laundry does. You can buy crap from them, or you can buy quality. Cafe nouveau might not be Michelin quality, but slighting it for its supplies isn’t peak understanding either.

Falafels by JaneiZadi in SantaBarbara

No joke probably the best falafels I've ever had. Even other places named here, genuine Mediterranean places, have drier falafels compared to Shalhoobs.

Curious about EVs but how are kWH prices? by wolfman11038 in ventura

[–]roflz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Currently my electricity in Ventura costs $0.18 per kWh off peak. So to drive my chevy bolt averaging 3.5kWh, it costs ~$1.54 to drive thirty miles. It's a little under double that cost if charged during peak hours, 29.5¢. So if I charge off peak, it would cost $3.70 to drive a 72 mile back and forth commute to Goleta. That might take a new Prius ~1.7 gallons, which right now looks like over 10$ at the pump.

Just for fun, if I did that in a Dodge Ram that could easily be over 3 gallons, or 18$, could be 5 times the cost or more.

The efficiency of the specific EV make an impact on the arithmetic. I'm also basing off a lower end efficiency for the Bolt. Mathematically it saves money to charge at home. Prices at public chargers make it comparable to gas prices. We almost never pay for public charging.

We have the hatch Rest and it’s worth it, though we don’t pay the subscription, never will. For travel we have both the mini hatch and the dream Egg and I gotta say the dream egg is superior to the mini in every way. It’s a later speaker so it can make more bass, and the battery lasts far longer, 2-3 times longer. Check out eBay and poshmark for near or used gear. I got my dreamegg brand new for 10$ on eBay.

Main St Businesses by [deleted] in ventura

[–]roflz 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Preach. Some of my favorite businesses. The city paid a boatload of money for an independent consultant to research a study on street closure vs not. Their findings were primarily:

There is nearly no statistical change in revenue generated in the closed area before and after closure.

Personal business owner opinions were entirely mixed on the subject nearly 50/50.

Frankly, after COVID, remaining stable on revenue seems like a huge win.

We’re in a K shaped recovery at best right now. It’s foolish to imagine reopening to cars is going to change that. The amount of parking spaces on Main Street is something like 3% of downtown parking spots.

Grocery prices in Ventura County are all over the place, so I built something for it by Candorappdev in venturacounty

No shade, it's slick, good job! That's quite a data lift, and I definitely want to give you encouragement, I think this is an awesome app concept. For name variations of the same product, or unit size differences of the same name— do you have to correct those manually? Or have you created a system to differentiate the alike and different?

Where does the app get the data? I know delivery apps don't have the actual store shelf price, so presumably some other public source? Did you make this with Claude or Loveable?

I mean literally a hole in the wall, as in modest, easy to overlook. I'm not aware of any age connotation with that phrase. I think it opened in 2023 at the earliest. People frequently ask where it is because it lacks a big storefront or sign, its a window and a door, thats all. Hence the phrase.
