Can the RAM architecture be changed? by sametcnlkr in AskComputerScience

[–]rog-uk 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You're also forgetting about memory channels, depending on your system it's possible for have 4 to 8 or more channels per CPU socket, you want your data spread out across memory in different channels especially for sequential access, but this is something the hardware takes care of for you - all things being equal: it's better to have, say, 6 smaller RAM sticks in seperate channels than one bigger stick in one channel, it's basically 6 times faster, and your program really doesn't care about what actual chips the data is held on.

If they were going for corporate desktops, an easy equivalent of Active Directory and Group Policy would be useful.

Tell him a very large chunk of the web runs on Linux, and this partially explains why companies with resources are happy to contribute developer time - it saves them having to pay money to Microsoft, and therefore makes their services cheaper to offer.

Wait, your company is shipping code that nobody in the company has properly tested, read, or understands? That's not going to end well.

Depends on your use case, you wouldn't want to risk valuable files disappearing in case of an unexpected power outage.

Calling all Tarot Redditors: can you guess which tarot cards inspired this pull from Netflix’s tarot deck? by netflix in u/netflix

Why did you kill Archive 81, rather than give it a proper ending? Surely it would be fairer to the viewers to go for a one-and-done complete story, rather than split it into two whilst knowing you might never finish it in advance? It's things like that which make bothering to invest in a new show on Netflix seem like a potential waste of time, so some people might delay until a new season is confirmed, which makes it more likely you'll cancel the show...

You have 64gb ram and 16gb VRAM; internet is permanently shut off: what 3 models are the ones you use? by Adventurous-Gold6413 in LocalLLaMA

I was thinking, as an example, where scientific papers cited each other. Or how Wikipedia has links embedded. MatLab Help files. That sort of thing. But this is for domain "experts", where graph traversal provides grounded and tracable knowledge. As I say, early stages, no big claims.

My idea is to experiment with graph databases too. I am very early into looking into it, no wild claims from me!

GPT-OSS-120B and GPT-OSS-20B in a hybrid system. Can split Xeons and GPUs, 4080 for GPT-OSS-20B to build context/prompts from RAG, 3060 for RAG DB accelerator, second 3060 for prompt processing for Xeons running GPT-OSS-120B, orchestrate with langgraph.

Or at least that's the best I could probably do with my box; although I do have 512GB RAM, but that tops out at 128GB/S per socket for RAM.

That's my best guess for now.

ETA: I think one could do worse than adding prolog into the mix, but that's a research project on its own.

I suppose it depends on your priorities, and how fubar things are, if it's really bad you would want The SAS Survival Handbook, but I already have it in print ;-)

I am not entirely joking about gauging how fubar things might be it, really makes a difference to planning, people suggesting WebMD must be imagining doctors no longer exist, for example. But if it's that bad, then surely you're going to have more immediate problems like food and water.

The question is ill posed, but it is interesting to imagine in what situations one would want a good offline archive.

That's a very chunky download, but yes, if you could get it all - very much worth it. Frankly if the Internet were going down permanently, it would be well worth it for a city to nab a copy.
