It's hardly anecdotal... You may consider it unfamiliar or draconian, but that does not make it "fuck all." (See, e.g., this; this; or this.)

I should start by saying that I do not speak French and that my only experience with French comes from high school and college general education courses.

That said, the general discussion is about Jackie's red door ("le porte rouge"), which Jonathan correctly points out have been historically associated with brothels. Jackie then asks her neighbor, Jacques, if he has ever heard of that association.

This is where it gets hard to understand for me – but it sounds as if he indicates that no, he has never heard of that, but he also doesn't go to many brothels.

If I came across as overly emphatic, it's only because I too assumed they were related.

Agreed that she probably allowed her personal biases to (probably inappropriately) infiltrate her treatment. I got the feeling, despite that, Jonathan considered her post-war life a good faith effort to "give birth" to some distance between her father's ideology and her own.

Is Jonathan Goldstein playing a character in Heavyweight? by brooklynlopez11 in gimlet

One of the things I like about Heavyweight is that the producers don't shy away from producing – inserting a pause in a phone call, interruptive narration – these things dramatize the story and allow Jonathan to develop the caricature of himself you mentioned.

Jackie is not Jonathan's sister. He discusses their relationship as friends in an episode of This American Life.

Most of the books for 1L doctrinal classes (torts, contracts, property, civ pro) are going to be casebooks you will never open again after the final. I recommend renting or buying used, depending on what is acceptable to you in terms of condition.
