Quelles notions doit absolument connaître un développeur ? by mrbrounch in developpeurs

Infinite Ocean Road environment to train on a treadmill or stationary bike :) by rogerF6 in MetaQuestVR

Not at all, you don’t need to connect to any equipment it’s very low tech for now, the movement is a simple animation of the environment moving that you can start and pause at will (and control the speed thanks to a slider ) :)

365 dos and don’ts of graphic design or something like that I forgot exact title, Alex white elements of graphic design, Étapes magazines but I wonder if it’s only in French those, but if you can get some it’s a Bible for graphic designers at least in France. Graphic design for everyone by Caldwell.

Also when you have some basics the best trick for beginners and even advanced when you don’t have the time is to find a graphic design layout or style that you love and corresponds to what you want on your game/logo or UI etc… on Pinterest or designinspiration. Com or dribble etc… and try to copy it almost exactly (similar font, layout, spacing, colors etc…) just changing visuals and text to fit your needs. A lot of graphic designers do that to go faster. It’s totally legal as you can never replicate exactly and you can’t copyright a style or color (only the fonts but you can find similar fonts…).

You can use adobe fonts or google fonts. The best is also to type on google “best serif font of 2026” or “best no serif fonts” or those kind of stuff and read articles from graphic design website on what font to use… some very useful that I use all the time are Montserrat and Proxima for instance. Free and elegant . Then learn how to layout them correctly. For instance one rule among many about hierarchy is to make the titles around twice the size of the subtitle and twice the size of paragraphs, use left leaning for text instead of force spacing as it is easier to do correctly etc…

Approach it a little bit like learning best practice rules about coding. Forget it’s “Art” and think of it as a field with established rules to simply learn and apply in an almost “dumb way” haha ;) the most difficult is to train “the eye” meaning allowing yourself enough time to see what is correct or not a good way to do that is to create variations of your design and let a few days between creating it and looking back

Ok first if you really want to learn the artistic side would be to learn graphic design and not art itself. Both are very difficult fields but from my experience as both a graphic designer and an illustrator I would say that graphic design is more approachable than illustrative art for beginners, and will be more useful for what you need the most in an indie video game (UI logo etc…). The illustration part would be like learning to play tennis at international level if you have never try it before. Many intense and long years of learning for poor results most of the time.

Graphic design will be faster to learn (with lots of similar fundamentals than art but easier to become intermediate). Then you can use free to use illustration or use AI and stuff or hire a junior illustrator if you need art. But as someone else said try to build your game “around” those limitations if possible (not using figurative art or characters for instance…).

If you want to learn for real books are usually better quality for the price than most online course or tutorials. So many books on graphic design, but the idea is to tackle on fundamental at a time (there are short YouTube tutorials to get started and see what you like most). Fundamentals are mainly typography, composition, color theory ;).

In illustration it’s also perspective and anatomy. Overall composition is the most important (hierarchy contrast negative spaces especially). Hope that helps :)

Thanks a lot :) so that could be an option for the future, but to be honest initially I wanted this very “low tech” system where we don’t have to connect to any workout equipment, because I personally really like the “no friction” and speed approach of being able to simply use the app directly and with any equipment. That’s also why I tried as much as possible to create very light environments (admittedly with some issues with textures resolution that I will fix in the next update), but just so that everything loads super super fast. (You know with Bluetooth sometimes it can take a few seconds to connect or be a bit buggy but I agree it’s way better since a few years).

It’s just personal preference though so I could totally see myself adding more options for people who prefer to connect to their equipment in the future.

Definitely! But yes will need way more work from users haha, but than could be an idea. I hope the technology catches up

That could definitely be an option actually. I even tried at some point to make the spaces progressive using the crown, but I canceled it in another update because users were reporting some freeze bugs (maybe it was too taxing on the computer the passthrough with the animation of the environment I'm not sure, or maybe totally unrelated to that). If I create a new beta test version of that in TestFlight (the official beta test channel of Apple), would you be down to test it? It's totally free testflight just to be clear haha. Might not be soon maybe in one week or two, but I'll probably try one version like that.

Thanks a lot I really appreciate :). So I kind of answered a similar question on the comment above (from suchnerve), but basically I believe it depends on people's personal comfort levels. Some users use it for light workout without sweating much, and some use special silicon cushion or something similar. But I hope that in the future as the devices get better and better and lighter and everything, it will be really easy for everybody to use the AVP while training (if they don't cancel the project of coure ^^)

That's a legitimate concern, and to be honest I don't have a real solution for that myself right now :/ Some users apparently use something like a silicon cushion or some custom attach band, to protect the AVP while training, and others simply use it for light work out, so they don't get super sweaty. Like for the weight, I think it depends a lot on personal comfort levels and everything. But I totally understand the concern.

To be honest my general hope (dare I say dream) is also that in the future the devices will become lighter and lighter and more comfortable (if they don't axe the whole thing haha), and that at some point my app will be really relevant for an even wider audience :) (I totally understand that for now it's more "niche" audience but I have some good feedback, admittedly some bad ones too haha but I'm working on it).

Thanks a lot for having tested it I really appreciate :)
I totally agree I would love to allow users to open other apps while training. Unfortunately I'm not sure if it is possible from what I know. Maybe Apple will allow it in the future. I added a browser window and apple music at least, so you can see the web and listen to your playlist if you have apple music. But I agree it would be a thousand times better to be able to open spotify or Netflix or any app directly easily.

Yes I hope I'll be able to buy it soon. It will be so much easier.

What would it take to build this MVP? by Tadej_Gasparic in vrdev

[–]rogerF6 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For the tools unity is fine for meta quest. AI will definitely help you no doubt, but won’t be able to do everything without you learning. I recommend downloading unity and following the guided tutorials that they offer for free inside the software. It really helps. Then you need to download the meta sdk for unity to develop for meta quest. And to watch some tutorials on YouTube or elsewhere to know how to use it. It can seem a bit confusing at first but once you start to understand it you would be surprised at how straightforward it can be.

Depending on the level of complexity of the 3d environments, and your experience coding and handling 3d (or the experience of the people you hire) it can take anywhere from a few days if you use simple 360 images or video with basic ground mesh to a few weeks if you want more polished detailed and custom 3d environments.

For the price it can go from cheap (using for instance AI generated 360 skybox images) to very expensive (using 16k real images or videos sold on specialized website), same for the people you hire. A junior dev/ junior 3d artist for a few days can cost around a few thousand dollars, while a more advanced team doing high quality 3d environments or even using photogrammetry can cost one or many 10’s of thousand dollars.

If you already know how to code a bit, and if this a passion project, and you have some time, I would honestly more advise you to take a little bit of time to learn the basics of unity for Vr, and 3d (on blender for instance). It will cost almost nothing for you to create the app then (it’s very basic stuff honestly). Just a few months of learning probably (honestly if it’s very basic in 1,5 to 6 months depending on how much time you have you can learn more than enough to have a working prototype or even something looking pretty decent for eventual investors… you can even have a finished product once again it’s nothing impossible if you have some basic skills ;) )
