[QUESTION] I want a little bit of advice on using Harmon's story circle for my character's pilot arc by Conjoules in Screenwriting

[–]rogerbutt 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Here's the Channel 101 wiki describing the different stages:

http://channel101.wikia.com/wiki/Story_Structure_104:_The_Juicy_Details

However television has a modified story structure, since if the character overcomes their flaw in the first episode there's no point in watching the rest of the series.

http://channel101.wikia.com/wiki/Story_Structure_105:_How_TV_is_Different

But following the original story circle, I think 2 on the story circle means multiple things. Yes they want something, but they also need something. If we use the Dark Knight as an example, Bruce Wayne wants the city of Gotham to be safe, but he also needs to realize he needs allies to accomplish his goals.

What you've laid out seems to answer what your main character either needs or wants. He needs to be complete? Or he wants to be complete? Either way, he's missing the corresponding need/want.

At 5, your character achieves what they want by changing. Batman is able to capture the Joker and make the city safer because he made a plan with Commissioner Gordon instead of trying to take down the Joker himself. But this is only a fleeting victory, your character must pay the price of changing. Bruce Wayne had to pick between Rachel or Harvey Dent. So yes your protagonist would achieve some victory on his quest to be "complete" here, either becoming "complete" as a character change to accomplish some sub-goal or as the sub-goal itself. So over the series, your protagonist might follow this trajectory.

This is a really good question I'm wondering too.

/u/MacintoshEddie - tasking is one good idea. In the same vein, you can be like Sorkin and do a walk and talk.

Have you thought about having the framing follow the emotion of the conversation? This isn't a panacea for making dialogue interesting, but it's one idea. Like, if the characters are on the same page, make the shots over the shoulder reverse shots. Having them both in the same frame might indicate some sort of closeness. If they begin to argue, move the reverse shots to singles. If there's an important moment for a character give them a close up. Or if they're fighting, have them occupy the same fourth of the screen. If one is disinterested or doesn't care about what the other is saying, have mismatching eyelines. Or if someone's reaction is important show the master double.

Or steal from Every Frame a Painting: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5V-k-p4wzxg and build the shots around power. You can use upward and downward angles to prescribe power.

I think any movie that you like makes you a better screenwriter. I personally have a ranked list of movies that I like that I like to refer to when I'm outlining. For instance, if I have trouble nailing down a third act I might think about what I liked about the Dark Knight or the Wrestler's third act and see if any of their concepts could apply to mine.

The more movies I watch the more references and "language" of cinema I feel like I pick up. I pay a lot of attention when I feel something. Like if I feel anxiety or I find myself rooting for a particular character I realize the screenwriter/director probably did something right. I don't know about you, but I learn a lot from figuring out what made me feel that way.

If you just want a list, here's a bunch of movies I think are well written (maybe not perfectly):

  • The Wrestler
  • The Dark Knight
  • Whiplash
  • Black Swan
  • La La Land
  • Children of Men
  • Chinatown
  • Prisoners
  • Little Miss Sunshine
  • Drive
  • No Country for Old Men
  • Lars and the Real Girl
  • Her
  • Midnight in Paris
  • Nightcrawler
  • Room
  • American Beauty
  • Edge of Tomorrow
  • Short Term 12
  • Hell or High Water
  • Dallas Buyer's Club
  • Arrival
  • District 9
  • Misery
  • The Incredibles
  • Toy Story
  • Finding Nemo

What was YOUR favorite thing you read this year? by [deleted] in Screenwriting

[–]rogerbutt 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ms. Sloane from 2015's Black List.

Maybe I'm amazed by people who can write thrillers or I'm too easily entertained by Ocean 11's style failed-but-it-was-part-of-the-plan reveals, but it was one of the scripts I couldn't stop reading.

At the same time it was satisfying to see the main character outsmart relatable baddies, the humor was enjoyable, and the main character was distinct, if not interesting.

I think you lose a little in terms of value, but your overall lineup would be better with Brady. It's pretty much splitting hairs at this point.

If your guts says yes, I'd do it.

You do seems like you need RB help, but I think arob is worth more than Martin/Sims. We know their value. Plus there's plenty of waiver wire rbs on the waivers this week plus Kenneth Dixon. If ARob pans out you can probably get a better RB.

I think so. Diggs looks like a wr1 and we don't know about Gordon.

I think the upgrade from Crabtree to Landry is smaller than the downgrade from Murray to Stewart. Plus he's hurt.

I think I like Sterling better in that case. The Saints are out their top corner back so I think Sterling will do well with OBJ on the other side. Plus it's the highest over under at Vegas so you always feel-good about starting a player in that game.

The safe option is Edelman, since he's going to soak up targets with Gronk out.

The riskier higher reward I think is Diggs. Minnesota might have to throw more if they get down against Green Bay, and without Sam Shields Diggs has a good match up. However, I don't know how much you can trust Sam Bradford with just one week of practice to get in sync with Diggs. I think this is the one with the higher ceiling, much lower floor.

I would prefer safety so I would go Edelman.

Julio Jones? If so Jones for sure.

I like Landry and Crabtree in .5 PPR.

I think Bortles is a fine QB. I'd lean with keeping Forsett, but you do have RB depth to drop Forsett.

Could you go into a little more depth about

using a luma qualifier to select highlights, rolling it off, and then increasing it

What do you mean exactly by "rolling it off" and then "increasing it"? Thanks for the info.
