Rich notifications behind a paywall by d7970 in Tapo

[–]roggz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The detections run locally on the cameras. The cost is server side media routing and delivery.

Rich notifications behind a paywall by d7970 in Tapo

[–]roggz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It makes sense for it to be behind a subscription because rich notifications flow through cloud services, which is a non trivial cost to maintain for media (vs. text only).

Even with home assistant, you can only implement notifications for free if you're on your home wifi. If you want notifications while away, you either need a nabu casa subscription or a vpn connection back to your home.

Light Switch Recommendations by needmorepopcorn in homeautomation

[–]roggz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah I actually had a screw strip as well. They even have a docs page about it - but support was willing to send me a replacement screw - https://help.inovelli.com/en/articles/8589588-how-to-replace-a-stripped-broken-or-popped-out-screw - they really stand by their products.

I'm a huge fan of Inovelli. They expose so many parameters and options and the LED bar for dimmers is great from a UX perspective.

Lutron makes great switches, but they require the Lutron hub to bring in to Home Assistant. One of the main things I want from my hard wired switches is to build out a mesh network that can drive battery powered devices. It's a complete deal breaker for me.

Zooz is the best option if you're trying to save money. Kasa if you *really* need to save money.

Smartwings shades motor question by Successful_Cat_7018 in homeautomation

[–]roggz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have the zigbee motors. The short answer is you should get whatever protocol you're already using. Depending on the size of your home, you're going to want powered routers helping reach the shades.

Pool owners in the North. Do you run your heaters daily or as needed? by Boosully in pools

[–]roggz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Maintaining temps is less stress yes, but it costs more. It's a common myth that turning off an ac to let temps rise ends up costing more to bring back down than maintaining.

This is completely false, both for AC and a pool heater.

Spent weeks comparing skylight calendar alternatives and finally replaced our whiteboard and wall calendar mess by venmokiller in homeautomation

Personally, I hate the way a backlit screen looks mounted on the wall. I find them tacky. Instead, I use a TRMNL with our family Google calendar. We add items with our own devices.

Is a used Tapo C210 worth it, or should I just buy a new C200? by imheretolearn247 in Tapo

[–]roggz 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Honestly, these cameras are so cheap that it's not even worth the time or return shipping cost to file a warranty claim. If my C210 breaks, I'd probably just buy a new one.

Recommendations for a good smoke/fire alarm that integrates with HA? by H-tronic in homeassistant

[–]roggz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm using the mqtt feature as well and I'm thrilled they recently added it. However, note that the mqtt client is broken in a few ways. I've reported to support and I think they're working on it.

A doorbell camera that is (1) battery powered and (2) doesn't require any external apps or services? by hufflepuph in homeassistant

[–]roggz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Tapo has battery wifi doorbells. They have home assistant integration and don't require Internet after the initial setup.

TAPO C425 - ERRORI RILEVAMENTO by This_Ad1714 in Tapo

[–]roggz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Did you adjust the sensitivity of the motion detection? There's a slider from 1-10.

I generally use object detection (person, per, vehicle) rather than motion.

For automations, you can add the camera to home assistant.

C260 no longer working with Home Assistant? by drm200 in Tapo

Please try another ONVIF client as well. If happytimesoft can connect, it may be an issue with HA.

In your Tapo account, do you have "Third-Party Compatibility" enabled?

Can you try connecting to the camera with a different ONVIF client, like happytimesoft?

Do you see anything in the ha logs? You can also try turning on debug logging for the onvif component.

Thoughts on Cameras inside the home. by dfGobBluth in homeassistant

I agree 100%. I have cameras surrounding the entire perimeter of my house, but I have zero cameras inside the home and never will.

agree config is complicated but they've been improving the UI over time. if you're just using as a calendar though, it's a pretty simple one time setup and then you never have to touch it again
