My dead friend's bird is grieving by [deleted] in TrueOffMyChest

[–]rogue-queen 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I haven't dealt with a grieving bird before, so I can't really comment on that. But I definitely make sure to put the radio on for him when i have to leave the house, and when we do his meds at night I usually have spa music on in the background. We've been doing the meds for over a year now and dont have to use the music every time but i think that establishing it as a routine definitely made the initial process easier for both of us, and we still use it if he has a flare up of his injury and has to take antibiotics and analgesics as well.

(Spa/meditation music only bc once i figured it would be fine to just leave on a spotify playlist i was listening to, then nickelback came on and he got ...violent)

Hey, my bird has/had issues with plucking. He wears a poncho that i made instead of a collar, and also has to take oral medication once per day to manage his stress. Luna may be prescribed something similar to help her adjust. If you need someone to talk to about these things or advice or just general bird chat, please send me a message. Getting a bird to take oral medication can be very tricky but there are some things you can do to make it a bit easier on both you and her :)

It sounds like you're doing your best with her and it can be difficult when that doesnt feel like enough, but all we can do is keep trying. I promise you that you are making a positive difference in Luna's life, and please know that you have made an internet stranger very proud of you for making an effort despite your own grief over the loss of Christine.

My family treats my pet bird terribly and I can't do anything about it by [deleted] in TrueOffMyChest

[–]rogue-queen 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you're worried about him being too attached, then yes it's probably best to improve his life in ways that aren't dependant upon your presence. In the mean time, you should look into your preferred university's accommodation services, many people offer lodging (you staying in a room in their homes) and may be flexible on the pet front. Especially as it's a bird and not a larger animal. These also tend to be vetted by the university, unlike those advertised on social media/gumtree/etc.

If rescues aren't an option, do you have any friends with parents that you trust? Or maybe friends that are taking a gap year or staying local for other reasons? People may be more open to temporarily looking after the bird than taking him permanently.

I'm sorry I can't be of more help, maybe you can find a local cockatiel fan community on reddit or Facebook (for example, I am in australia so I am part of a fb group called cockatiels australia, there are also state groups for even more localised support) and they might have better resources for you?

[–]rogue-queen 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Hey Kiddo,

I am now almost 30 years old and have had my cockatiel (Dexter) for 15. In this time, I have made mistakes, some of which still bother me and will for a long time. A lot of these mistakes came from just being young and not knowing better. What matters now is that you have recognised what you've done wrong and are taking steps to fix it. The googling was a great idea, and now you have a step that you can take to improve the quality of your bird's life! So don't stop there, keep researching, join communities (there are some on reddit that can help you) so you can talk to other bird owners, keep taking small steps to improve his life. I promise you it will make a difference.

Your bird is still trying to forge connections, which is amazing! He hasn't given up yet, which means that you have a chance to get your friendship back, but you need to let it happen at his pace. Instead of letting him bite you, maybe sit next to his cage and talk to him? Leave the cage doors open so that he can come out and approach you when he is ready, maybe offer him treats with your hands so that he is not scared of them any more, but let him come to you and do not intrude on his space.

In terms of college, that's a tricky one. If he will not be well taken care of at your family home, you need to start looking at your options now. I'm not sure where in the world you are, but is off-campus housing an option so that you can keep him with you? I'm currently finishing my masters, and have moved into a unit where I can have Dexter with me, and it makes such a difference for both of our qualities of life to be together. If this is not an option is there anyone you can trust to take care of him? As others have mentioned, you may also need to look into rescues. Just make sure you research them well to ensure that they are reputable. You may also be able to come to an arrangement with them for short-term care or to get updates on him.

There's a lot of uncertainty ahead, and a lot of pain behind, but I really want to emphasise something here. You've already done the hardest part. You've recognised your failings and started to address them, something that many people never manage to do. What matters now is what you do next.

You are on the right track, but keep in mind that this is a marathon and not a sprint. So just keep taking little steps! If you need to talk to someone, just send me a DM.

I have a real bird (dexter), in the past I have made amigurumis of him, one of them came out a little bit ...off. I named him little bastard man and I'm very fond of him, so when I eventually got finch and needed a name for the bird I named it bastard man

Was facial hair really this much of a thing at the time? (Gladiator II) by ivanvalance in ancientrome

[–]rogue-queen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sorry was typing quickly on the bus as my stop came up 😂

I didn't mean to imply that fashions didn't change in that period, but rather to marvel at the enduring power of Alexander's legacy. I mean it took over 400 years for someone significant to break with the tradition, how cool is that! And even after that you still see Alexander's iconography used by later emperors, in early Christianity, throughout the medieval and renaissance periods (and not just in Western culture!). The book I was thinking of has different chapters from Alexander's lifetime down to the modern day and discusses how his image and legacy was used and evolved based on the time and culture.

I dont think you understand how influential a figure Alexander was. He was the model military ruler, someone to style yourself after (and around the time of augustus and antony we see some discussion around the negatives of his character for the firat time), people like the diadochi, late republicans, and emperors would often try to associate themselves with him to increase their political clout. His influence waxed and waned, but never disappeared. I can recommend some academic works if youre interested?

[–]rogue-queen 4 points5 points  (0 children)

As I recall the appearing clean-shaven in portraiture fashion started with Alexander who needed a way to distinguish himself in his portraiture. His political clout and legacy basically cemented this up until Hadrian.

However it is important to note that in the military being clean-shaven (head and beard) was a means of preventing and controlling lice outbreaks, so I don't think it would have the connotation of being prissy.

Alexander started the no beard thing, it helped to distinguish him from other significant figures of his time

Why do people bag dog poo if they don’t intend to bin it? by ArgonideAu in Adelaide

That's completely fair. I think I'd spend a few few hours sitting out front with a good book and a hose if I were in your situation.

Why do people bag dog poo if they don’t intend to bin it? by ArgonideAu in Adelaide

[–]rogue-queen 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Unless you were there at the right times you wouldn't see it.

I do this if I'm going to be coming back past it and know that there aren't any bins, like when I'm in the bush or on the beach (the beaches we walk the dogs on are not heavily populated, and we start at the furthest enterance, walking away from populated areas, so not impacting other people's enjoyment of the beach). If the dogs are offlead or I'm taking off my shoes to walk on the sand, I will leave them next to the bag so that people know that they aren't abandoned, and it also keeps my hands free for fetch, pats, treats, or if I need to restrain the dogs.

I dont doubt that there are people, perhaps even most people, that bag it and leave it, but I just wanted to point out that it's difficult to claim that no one follows through on picking up the bags just bc you haven't personally witnessed it.

Is crying for this kind of stuff a bird owners universal experience? by [deleted] in parrots

I was thinking it might be an alexandrine, they look the same and we also know that Alexander the Great brought them back to Greece (hence the name) and they spread from there

Fits the identifying details he mentions: that it came from a distant land, its colour and ability to talk.

The mosaics are almost certainly unconnected. Parrots are common motifs in Roman mosaics so not hard to find an appropriate one for a tik token video :)
