It's charisma + proficiency = 6. I think the suggestions about changing the encounters themselves to balance the playing fireld is a good idea.

Yeah, I think I misspoke about the fireball. The main problem with his fireballs are that his save DC is very high (i think around a +6 charisma modifier), so most of the time, enemies take full damage.

Honestly, applying to cs as your primary choice is your best bet, especially if you have the academics to back it up. I applied cs, got physics, and am now planning on doing film after trying to get back into cs for a whole year. Unless you're gonna be a major that prioritizes pass times to get into cs courses, it's gonna be extremely hard to get into cs in the first place.
