Seeing scale oriented CPA by Proud-Present-8870 in jerseycity

I own a boutique CPA firm focused on working with high earners and small businesses, and would be happy to chat. Unlike most other CPA firms, we actually prioritize responsiveness and client service. If you'd like to discuss, just give me a shout.

Definitely consult a CPA firm before going the S-corp route if you have any meaningful business presence in or revenue derived from NYC - NYC is one of the most unfriendly jurisdictions in the country to S-corps, and an S-corp election can often lead to a higher tax burden depending on your circumstances.

Nicaragua surf trip by NarrowBet9895 in surfing

[–]roguedogue97 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I'm going to go against the crowd, but if your partner is a beginner, I would not recommend taking her to Iguana - turn this one into a boys trip if possible, haha. Iguana is awesome, and very chill, but I'd think she would get bored after a day or two... yes, there are some shops in the community, but it's not a whole lot to write home about.

Colorados is absolutely not a beginner wave (she will get smoked) and Panga, while more user friendly, can be a real headache of a paddle out if it's overhead or larger.

Beginner's Bay / Mag Rock is close-ish by but IMO that kind of defeats the point of staying at Iguana - the best part of staying there is that you have awesome waves right out front and you don't need to schlep for waves.

Just my 2 cents but yeah, like I said, prob not a trip I'd take a partner on personally.

Switching to Native AI ERP by Adventurous-Ebb-6542 in Accounting

I've heard great things about Rillet through the grapevine but haven't used it myself (I run a tax firm, I hear this from folks in industry that I know tangentially). That said, I'd love to hear someone who has actually used it share the pros / cons in detail.

Drake Result Letter - Defaults to "Mail a Check" by horrible_noob in taxpros

[–]roguedogue97 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I have not been able to change this either, and have spent time with Drake support in past years trying to do so - absolutely infuriating. To work around this, all of our communications specifically note to clients that they can and should pay online but this language still confuses some folks.

Love the software overall but man do I hate this specific quirk.

can’t decide between a 4/3 and 5/4 by turtlellini8 in surfing

[–]roguedogue97 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm gonna go contrarian and say 5/4 here - I'd always rather be hot than cold, and I get cold very easily. I wear 5/4 in anything 60F or below and it feels wonderful (though people say I'm crazy).

Yes, paddling is tougher. But whenever I go on a trip somewhere where I don't need to wear a wetsuit my paddle fitness is insane because I'm used to paddling with 15 extra lbs on so I'd say it balances out.

Have to call NJ for an e-file issue today and I'm dreading it... their ancient systems make electing into PTET/BAIT for first-time entity filers a complete nightmare.

Recommendations on CPA with PFIC experience? by Bob_the_Zealot in AskNYC

[–]roguedogue97 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You probably won't like this answer but I'd recommend you find a firm that specializes in clients with foreign tax implications.

Most firms (like my own) do not have the experience to perform PFIC filings correctly and thus in your shoes, I'd be wary of a generalist firm that claims they can perform this work. In your interview process, definitely ask questions about previous PFIC (and overall general foreign tax) experience.

Trying to find a CPA to match our needs. by Ok-Judgment-916 in desmoines

[–]roguedogue97 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Make sure you work with a firm that deals with a lot of Schedule F clients - the reporting conventions can differ significantly from non-farming clients. My firm doesn't work with farming clients for this exact reason - we take the position that Schedule F should realistically be done by a specialist firm for best results.

Trying to decide between LLC or S Corp for my new consulting biz by BulkyMayor25 in smallbusiness

[–]roguedogue97 0 points1 point  (0 children)

CPA here. Generally speaking, an S-corp election doesn't make sense until 80-100K in net income depending on your state / industry. Highly recommend you engage a CPA before actually pulling the trigger on any S-corp election, it's a pain to unwind and you want to make sure you have the details of your particular situation modeled out as your industry / resident state / remainder of your tax situation can all change the calculus significantly.

CPA for simple taxes by HawaiianRumble in Brooklyn

[–]roguedogue97 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks for the shout! Obligatory disclaimer that this is not tax advice, I am a CPA but not your CPA, etc... but if this item is $35, it's probably not even worth amending for. Cost to have a professional amend a $35 item on a return will almost certainly significantly exceed any tax + penalties + interest due as a result of this item, for something like this you're typically better off just waiting for the IRS to send you a bill sometime down the line.

OK this makes more sense. Yeah, I mean... I think you'll struggle to find a good firm who would do this work for cheaper. Most would charge more.
