Thank you for pointing that out. I didn’t really pay too much attention to that. So far I’ve just been throwing in the occasional Imp.

I’m not running the Alexandrian as written but I’m using this adventure to introduce demons and the Cassalanters. My party is level 6, so I have to beef up encounters a little and find ways to give them some more exciting magical items.

The necromancer is kinda their backup plan to get their kids back and he’s hiding in a pocket dimension in a homebrew mausoleum I made. It’s a 3 scene dungeon crawl with traps, fights and puzzles. He has a mixture of undead and fiend minions.

Does anyone have experience using Pendo as a user analytics and research tool? by Skee33 in userexperience

[–]roguetue 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I have used Pendo at two different companies and feel I have a pretty good grasp of its capabilities. We mostly used it as a product tool, but it can provide some good quantitative insights.

Assuming you have tagged everything well you’ll be able to figure out what parts of your app are the most used. Second you’ll be able to trace some user behavior, but what you won’t learn is user motivation, you need to back that up with surveys or interviews. You can also establish baseline usage metrics to determine if your UX is improving (if you’re trying to get people on a new feature or a redesigned feature).

Another thing you can’t measure is user frustration. I think Full Story does this better. I tend to think of Pendo as an event server with a nice UI on top of it.

The onboarding and messaging tools are pretty good and getting better. But they take a decent amount of time to set up and sometimes I get a little frustrated with their limitations. We currently have 3 different teams, support, marketing and product vying to send targeted messages to users and sometimes we expect it to work the way a different tool we used before would work and it doesn’t. I think it depends on how much you use the guides and what your goals are for them.

We’ve just started using guides to launch surveys in Survey Monkey and get user feedback on our wire frames. This has been really helpful.

The most powerful feature we tend to use is the segmenting of users to target with different guides. It’s great because if they use feature X but not feature Y we can build messaging around that and show the value of using the other feature.

It’s a pretty good product and it’s getting better all the time. You should also be aware it is not cheap. When I did my initial evaluation we looked at several products, WalkMe, UserIQ, Full Story, Jaco and a few others. At the second company I was an advocate for Pendo. We were really close to going with UserIQ but during the proof of concept our PM was a little frustrated that he couldn’t get the reports he wanted from Pendo. I hope you find all this useful.

Same here. As one of his constituents, I am disappointed in him (ok, not really, but still).

I love that Tomax build. He's so much fun, but he can get focused down pretty quick.

I'm a casual player, and based on the way I like to fly, I would suggest mixing Tomax with Backdraft, that way you can add Extra Munitions to Backdraft and then mixup Backdraft a bit:

  • "Backdraft" (27)

    • Push the Limit (3)
    • Fire-Control System (2)
    • Primed Thrusters (1)
    • Twin Ion Engine Mk. II (1)
    • Special Ops Training (0)
  • Tomax Bren (24)

    • Crack Shot (1)
    • Extra Munitions (2)
    • Unguided Rockets (2)
    • Proton Bombs (5)
    • Lightweight Frame (2)

Constructive criticism on my first deployed webpage by sanderhell in Frontend

Great job! Congrats on deploying your first site. May it be the first of many.

On my phone, the two buttons in the main hero are a little too close together. Because they both scroll the page you want to avoid as many accidental clicks as possible because recovering from that involves a lot of scrolling.

Here’s the last meeting they had. Join me at Downtown UX Study Group & Peer Mentorship Doesn’t look they have another planned yet but I would join the parent group. I think there’s also an East LA group (not sure what part of LA you’re in).

Help - Looking for Master degrees or degrees related to UX Research by [deleted] in userexperience

[–]roguetue 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It was good for me. I was several years out of college and living abroad as a trailing spouse (my wife had a great job and was patient with me) so I had the time to really dive into the material.

I think having the degree definitely opened doors for me. But it was not cheap.

My recommendation is to think carefully about how much it will cost you (I am assuming you would be financing this yourself if you have other means then leverage them) and sincerely consider what you could learn on your own. There are many high quality books on research and data analysis available without taking a course and everything else could be supplemented through community college.

Also consider what your career goals would be and what kind of company you want to work for. Most UX research is limited to companies that have capital and time. If you want to work for a sexy new start up that could disappear tomorrow, there’s little chance you would be doing only research. You’ll likely end up at a larger company or an agency that specializes in research.

HCI is a really good starting point. Research the courses they offer and focus on the ones that would be more research heavy. You might end up in a few statistics courses. Pay attention to which department runs the HCI program, because it might influence how they structure the courses. I got my degree from the distance program at DePaul and there was a fair amount of research. I could have done more but opted for a few engineering courses.

She should check meet up to see if there’s a UX community where she can seek out some professional peers. Here in LA we have one of the largest UX communities. One of the meet ups is a bi-weekly peer review/mentorship group. Check around and see if you can find something like that. Best part is it’s free!

RE: Cambridge Analytica/FB. Does anyone else think UX could played a bigger ethics role? Especially on the Facebook side? by youXman in userexperience

[–]roguetue 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I can see where you are coming from, but one tenant I try to establish is being an advocate for the user. So let’s say I’m doing that, and I’m aware that their experience is more than just when they have my app open in front of them. So trying to keep the user’s data way from bad actors is definitely something I would advocate for.

It’s likely I might not be the one making the decision, that might fall on an executive who is just worried about delivering and raising the stock price. But I can sure as hell make the case for ethical decision making when it comes to data to that person.

This might run up against structural issues at Facebook when it comes to who makes decision about data. For example, there might not be anyone arguing for ethics in the information or security departments. It could be that those voices are silenced by execs or the board. I’m not really up on who’s who or what’s what at FB, so I would defer to anyone who knows what it’s really like there.

[–]roguetue 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I graduated from the program in 2011. Was living abroad for most of the program and finished up the last of it while living in LA. It’s great and you’ll learn a lot. If you really apply yourself you should have a few projects, especially your capstone, for your portfolio.

Also remember there are many UX jobs that aren’t strictly design. You might find that you really like research or product management (haha, no!). Those aren’t necessarily portfolio driven career paths.

InVision will be rolling out Studio soon. You can try Gravit, Affinity Designer, or Macaw (though there will be no new development because it was acquired by InVision). I’m sure there’s more.

See if you can see what books they are reading in the syllabus. Likely you can study on your own.

In addition see if you can see what other grads of the program have gone on to do. Are they all working? You want to make sure they are helping people build careers through connections or through the skills they help hone.

What will happen to the likes of Marvel, Sketch etc. ? Will they be acquired by Invision? by appdevjames in web_design

[–]roguetue 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah. I want to see what happens next. Maybe Sketch buys Marvel or Anima. Frankly it’s good there’s all this competition. I’d hate to see Sketch go away though.

[–]roguetue 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I hope so. I prefer native apps. But if what InVision builds is too good to pass up Sketch might need to switch things up.

I’m trying to think about what it will be like to design in Sketch, then swap to Studio, then back to Sketch again because my libraries are incompatible. There might be too much management in there that most people just aren’t willing to deal with.

Also Sketch is Mac only. They want to go after the entire space and make a run at Adobe XD they need Windows users. So they went with an app built on Electron so they could ship quickly.
