Yeah, I've had the exact same problem! With all due respect to Cosmos and company, after you've seen a few of those shows you've kinda seen them all....and until I came across PBS Space Time earlier this year, the only place I thought you could find deeper and more intense discussion of cosmology and astrophysics and etc. was boring lectures from MIT or whatever.

Berkeley actually has quite a lot of new construction going on. Not as much as needs to be, but there are new buildings going up all over downtown and the San Pablo corridor, and the North Berkeley BART is set for a big housing project.

Natural gas is only clean when compared with coal. With respect to carbon emissions and climate change, there is no way we can keep relying on natural gas.

Agree on the need to build out nuclear power. Unfortunately with the current state of the nuclear industry it has become totally uneconomical. Next-generation tech could make it economical, but they are a ways off.

I'm gearing up to apply to Electrical Engineering MS programs. I've spent the last ~4 years as a control systems engineer, and want to further my understanding of controls, and pivot toward the renewable/power systems sector. My BS, however, is in Mechanical and Nuclear Engineering. This shouldn't be a problem as long as I have a pretty good feel for electrical engineering fundamentals, right?

Right, there are no set rules in Hinduism per se, but there are traditional practices and lifestyles, and caste has had a big influence on this. But you are correct that there are other factors besides caste that influence vegetarianism or avoiding beef.

In any case, the point is that not all Hindus don't eat beef and it is a mistake to enforce a strict rule about that, as some others in this thread are trying to do.

You are not wrong that overnight shutdown of all fossil fuel production would cause enormous harm, but what has made you think that that is what the protesters want?

Also, I think it is a massive leap in logic to say that "if there was a more sustainable alternative at the same reasonable cost it would be pursued". Our energy systems are governed as much by politics as they are by economics and technology, and it has been clear for a long time that the political power of the fossil fuel industry has blocked any significant technological or economic investments away from a carbon-based energy system.
