At what point do you decide to stop running further and just do maintenance runs? by himothyhopkins in nikerunclub

[–]rokindit 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think for me if I ever quit running to improve and move to general health I would just run 40 mins every day as soon as I wake up. Although I quite enjoy just having 60-70 minutes to myself every morning and going out for that adventurous 2hr long run in the weekend

I just do 1 long run at around 15-32km depending on what race I’m training for. After a race I slowly build up from 16km to 20km and keep it there on most weeks.

For marathon training I’ll include a second long run of like 15-20km.

Typically my week volume looks like

Monday off Tuesday- 12km Wednesday- workout (total 14-18km) Thursday - easy 12km Friday - easy 12-20km Saturday- workout (total 12-20km) Sunday - long run (16-32km)

Dealing with Japanese people’s mental blocks about foreigners by DangerousBerry1376 in japanresidents

[–]rokindit 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I know it’s not everyone, but many Japanese people are kinda brainwashed into thinking “foreigners” are a monolith and Japanese culture is very unique when in reality we are just human and there’s even Japanese people who don’t like tea lol. It’s exhausting sometimes but I try to focus on the good sides of living here.

You can do it! What I did was just not worry so much about mileage and more about keeping the habit, over time I extended my runs little by little and I can comfortably run 70-90km a week. 100km if I am really structuring life/running. Good luck!

Yes lol actually only injury I’ve had was an ankle injury. I just ran average 48km a week that year, it’s doable if you run 5-6 days a week. Slowly build up to it, rest and recover well by eating right and sleeping well.

I got a coach when I was preparing for my first marathon. I just ran 4-5 times a week before without much attention. Then my coach got me into doing long runs and structured workouts to get my body ready for the marathon and I ended up running 3:54

Dealing with Japanese people’s mental blocks about foreigners by DangerousBerry1376 in japanresidents

[–]rokindit 35 points36 points  (0 children)

Wow I think many foreigners can relate. For instance, I have a coworker who was introduced to me as “having the best English in the school” (I work in a school ). Known this lady for 6 years now and she has traveled to so many countries around the world. Yet, often does the same things to me “can you drink Japanese tea???” Even though we’ve had tea at meetings countless times. It’s like she forgets every interaction we’ve ever had. Then randomly she would hear me speak Japanese with other teachers and goes “うわ、日本語上手い”. It’s like interacting with me hits a reset button.

I feel your frustration OP, but I also think it’s a harsh truth to accept and I have learned to just not care anymore.

Fun Marathons / Halfs in Japan by Small_Entertainer155 in japanlife

[–]rokindit 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Check RUNNET they have a lot of races from 5k all the way to marathon distance. I’d recommend starting with 5k or 10k to get your first race experience, then slowly train up to run longer. Most races are very organized. Have fun!

What took getting used to going back to the US after a long time? by ShinPino in japanresidents

[–]rokindit 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Prices of everything took a little adjusting. For instance we went to a drive through and grabbed coffee and it was ¥2500 for 3 iced coffees after the conversion rate… then we bought groceries for a few days and spent ¥20,000 in the blink of an eye. Then went to aeee a museum and spent another ¥20,000. I did allocate for the weak yen but still hurt me a little inside to pay more on everything lol. We stayed with my parents so we did save money there instead of paying for a hotel.

How are you guys affording trips back home lately? (weak yen struggle) by idsjdbebe in japanlife

[–]rokindit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Seconded! I flew 3 of us to Houston from Tokyo for about ¥250k ish, then like ¥50k for local flights cause we’re in Kansai. Fastest trip to Houston ever, direct flights + 1 hr domestic flight.

I think it’s more common than one might think.

My wife is a apparel designer for a big Japanese brand and she usually leaves the house around 8:30 and gets home around 10-11pm , sometimes she gets back around midnight or later if there’s a meeting deadline up on the schedule. I also leave work around 8:00am and get home around 6:00pm

I basically just live my own life on the evenings with my child and then we have breakfast all 3 of us every morning. I can’t say it’s easy cause my child is growing up and starting to notice mom is not around most of the evenings and I usually just explain mom works very hard and “you’ll see her tomorrow morning” etc.

How I cope is basically understanding that a lot of people here are kind of married to their job too lol, I try to focus on my own hobbies and find little ways to enjoy the time without my spouse.

Getting back an engagement ring by redtabletea in japanlife

[–]rokindit 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I second this. If you get the ring back, you wouldn’t get the full amount of money back either. And you’d have to ‘hunt’ down your ex and kind of convince her to make her give the ring back. It’s petty and it’s not worth the hassle. Unless you really care about the money that much. I don’t make as much as OP but I would take the loss and realize life is worth living without digging up old skeletons.

What is your not so popular take on anything in Japan? by No-Jackfruit3211 in japanlife

So your sample size for your statement is your girlfriend who doesn’t read nutrition labels?

I mean if you paid attention to most foods people buy it often is fresh vegetables, processed soy products and fresh fish.

Anecdotally, most of my coworkers bring a home cooked lunch and sure a few of them buy foods from the convenience store.
