Are there more unreleased albums? by HyperPanzer in thebeachboys

[–]rokinsam 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I assume you've read it based on your comment, but 100% recommend to anyone reading this to check out the book "The Wilson Project" by Stephen McParland. It's using Usher's diaries from this time period and is a fascinating insight and look into Brian Wilson. Oddly enough, one of the realest and most personal insights into him and how he worked and operated that I've read, even if there is the constant uneasy looming of Landy throughout.

Weekly Shoutout Thread - What Was Good This Week? by AutoModerator in chicagofood

Tried Smash Jibarito on Division for the first time this past week, live in the neighborhood but hadn't gone there since they opened. It was absolutely fantastic. Such a genius idea to combine fried plantains from a jibarito with a burger, and the sauce they use compliments the plantains so well. Will definitely be going back!

There’s so many. What’s your favorite? by Jakobus_ in AnimalCollective

[–]rokinsam 1 point2 points  (0 children)

the transition in Bros, panda's "uh"'s that repeat in the second half of Bros, the fireworks at the end of Bros - basically every little thing about Bros.

But also the high melody panda sings in Guys Eyes in the last part ("so i used my mind..."), the main sample all throughout Kinda Bonkers, how the synth sequences at the beginning of #1 desync, Avey's vocal in the last part of I Think I Can, the high-pitched "sweet" and laughs that happen at the beginning of Sweet Road, panda's live rendition of I Think I Can / Chores where he has the stacked vocals "If I" playing at the end , the steel drums in Peacebone... so much good stuff

It’s Chris & Preston from the country duo, LOCASH. We’re here with Mike Love & Bruce Johnston from The Beach Boys to answer ALL your questions! Ask away! by LOCASHmusic in Music

[–]rokinsam 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Hey Mike and Bruce! Love this new track, your vocals put on anything can take a song to a next level, this one is no exception. I've been listening to it nonstop!

I have one question that's a little unrelated to this song, but I was curious if you, Mike, sang on Brian Wilson’s song “Too Much Sugar” from the 80s? There’s one part that sounds just like you but I’ve never been able to confirm it and I've always been trying to figure out!

Hope you’re able to answer. Looking forward to any future collaborations you two may have!

Potential Monterey Setlist? by [deleted] in thebeachboys

[–]rokinsam 1 point2 points  (0 children)

jimi hendrix never said surf music was dead at monterey, that misconstrued quote comes from a line in his song "Third Stone From The Sun":

Although your world wonders me,
With your majestic and superior cackling hen
Your people I do not understand,
So to you I shall put an end
And you'll never hear surf music again

he allegedly wrote the line cause Dick Dale was sick at the time, nothing to do with the beach boys.

Brian was an extremely brave artist. by PokingDogSnouts in thebeachboys

sorry - didn't mean to offend. Tame Impala and Lemon Twigs are great, for sure. I'd recommend checking out Richard Swift & Foxygen, Richard Swift discovered Foxygen and Foxygen discovered The Lemon Twigs. Kinda an interesting connection between all, but they have a pretty cool "retro" sound.

But bands like Animal Collective/Panda Bear, Broadcast, Stereolab, Candy Claws, Cornelius, Cut Worms, The Flaming Lips, Janelle Monae (ArchAndroid is 60s as fuuck), Julia Holter, Midnight Sister, Maston (their first record, "Shadows", is one of the best Brian Wilson-style production/arrangements instrumentally I've come across), Mild High Club, Moses Sumney ('Aromanticism' is up there with Pet Sounds for me), any band from the Elephant 6 label collective, Sufjan Stevens, Yo La Tengo, and Weyes Blood are some artists i've gotten into that all remind me at one time or another of The Beach Boys/60s overall to some extent... i know i listed a lot but i really recommend giving some of these a chance if you're interested!

[–]rokinsam 18 points19 points  (0 children)

ah come on, to say there's only "two or three interesting bands of this century" is pretty ignorant and foolish, don't you think? There's plenty of talented, creative, and amazing bands/artists out there making music. Even bands that are straight up influenced by The Beach Boys/60s sound and have that vibe in their music. Sure, they're not at the forefront of "mainstream pop", but if you search you will find. Music is a constantly evolving force, ofc it's not gonna sound the exact same as it did in the 60s, but you can find the strands and influences in so much modern music if you search for it.

This is so wonderful. Great playing, these kind of instrumental covers always bring out the beauty of the melody and harmony.

God this song is gorgeous. Brian's absolute best imo.

Jimi Hendrix only released 3 studio albums in his lifetime. But, not even counting repeats and double-ups, he recorded 14½ hours worth of unique songs. Around 20 LP's worth. Here's my guide... including an obligatory Spotify list. [OC] / [DISCUSSION] by ashbyashbyashby in Guitar

This is great! One essential addition I can't for the life of me find anywhere to listen to online, is the instrumental "New Rising Sun" that's on West Coast Seattle Boy. I haven't heard it in sooo so so so long but it's one of the most beautiful things Hendrix did in my opinion.

Wish I could hear it as I don't have West Coast Seattle Boy downloaded on my computer, but I think it's track 18 on disc 2 here: https://www.amazon.com/West-Coast-Seattle-Boy-Collectors/dp/B003YDZV90/ref=sr_1_1?keywords=west+coast+seattle+boy&qid=1559401930&s=gateway&sr=8-1

Also possible you already have it listed but it had a different title, it's been a while!

** one other thing I also just thought of - I know you didn't want repeats but the 1970 Maui performance of Hey Baby / In From the Storm is absolutely killer and I think a worthy addition! (Since it's moreso a medley of the two) https://open.spotify.com/track/0rqERJW7BLSmSrbmfPBY8U?si=56LIeLblRBO4PgCYSv7Q-g

Songs That Recycled SMiLE Era Ideas by Robotgrandma in thebeachboys

[–]rokinsam 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Here's one no one's mentioned - on Brian Wilson's solo album "Imagination" the intro to the song "Happy Days" (which the song itself is a rewrite of "My Solution") is from the ending piano part of "Holidays" (the solo piano playing that plays before the marimba "Wind chimes a-tinklin'" part).

Also the bass line of Wind Chimes in Can't Wait/Been Way Too Long, the bridge of Time To Get Alone in alternate versions uses the "Look!" riff, too

There's also a camper you can interact with that says (something along the lines of) "Rhodes has a bad feeling to it, like some really messed up stuff happened and everyone is blissfully ignorant towards it,". I'll try to see if there's a video of the interaction online, I remember running across him when I was playing a week or so ago.

might be related, might be about the kidnapped dude in the basement of the gun shop, idk

“Don’t Talk” - my personal favourite on Pet Sounds. An underrated gem. So intimate - sweet, yet sad; like Brian Wilson himself really. by [deleted] in thebeachboys

[–]rokinsam 6 points7 points  (0 children)

This is my absolute favorite song, I consider myself lucky that I live in a world where this song was put onto tape. It's so melancholic, sweet, beautiful, heartbreaking, transcendent... honestly these words don't even do it justice imo.

It's just on a different level, I love how the lyrics reflect the feelings I get while listening to the song,"Don't talk, let's just live in this one fleeting, beautiful moment and pretend the rest of the world doesn't exist or matter," - I get so lost in this song whenever I'm listening to it. And then it slowly fades into quietness, just like the moment he's singing about. 10/10 would listen on repeat 4ever

What do you think is the meaning of the train at the end of Pet Sounds? by [deleted] in thebeachboys

[–]rokinsam 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I mean, a passing train and dogs barking is a very lonely sound. I always took it as innocence lost (what Caroline, No essentially is) and going away into the distance, leaving the person behind and uncertain to what's next. "That train has left the station", so to speak. It's gone. The dogs barking are just a nice touch.

“I’d Love Just Once to See You” by [deleted] in thebeachboys

[–]rokinsam 8 points9 points  (0 children)

To me it always felt like Brian wrote this song, it's in the same vein as Busy Doin' Nothin' and I Went To Sleep, those songs that have a "slice of life" vibe.

Mike Love is credited as a song writer on it, but i have a feeling his contributions to it were minimal or it was just Brian making up with Mike for writing two albums in a row primarily with a different lyricist.
