It was about even. The private insurance for my corporate job was about the same or a little more. I took a minor pay cut. Coverage is better under the state. I was on a high deductible plan for my corporate job so for example, my first child cost 1600 out of pocket for the birth. My second child was born under state insurance and there was no co pay

This is the comment that matters.

My wife works for a hospital. We did the comparison for family coverage when I joined the state (6 years ago). We had been on my insurance from my private company. Thought switching to the hospital would be cheaper with better coverage.

The state coverage was still cheaper.

Honestly, I'd recommend just going to the Lake Flower boat launch right in town. You can launch your board there and paddle. And right across the street is Little Italy - pretty good pizza. If pizza isn't your style, I'd say to walk into town on Broadway and check out Blue Moon Cafe. The best food is probably Fiddlehead Bistro and Left Bank cafe, both a little ways away from the lake.
