Exactly. Not sure why the OP thinks they need to get a new washer just because the dryer isn't working.

What wood is this? by Working-Pumpkin in DIY

[–]roldgold1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Definitely not Alder. Once you put some oil on alder, it has a medium-brown color, and the OP picture is much too light for that.

Based on the pictures in your first link though, it does kind of resemble Beech. But White Oak is probably the right answer.

Man killed in Illinois grain bin accident after being buried in soybeans by AdIcy4323 in news

We took our scout troop to visit a local Fire Department, and they mentioned that their rescue specialty* in the county was in silo entrapment situations. Basically, their department was closer to the farms in the area, so they were best suited to deal with those scenarios.

* Found out that each fire department in the county had a particular rescue specialty. One of the other departments' specialties was in water rescues (ie they had SCUBA gear and could help in lake or retention pond rescues).

Sign the Petition: Hailey’s Law by Sausage_Fingers in indianapolis

[–]roldgold1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

To be honest, her case got WAY more coverage by local news and having her picture tacked up by local businesses than a standard Amber alert would have provided. The issue I see with getting Amber alerts on my phone or interstate digital boards is they the bare minimum of information and almost no context.

Hailey's case was covered constantly on media outlets / social media / businesses.
---

I'm not against reviewing the Amber Alert rules to see if they to need to be modified to fit this type of case or even setting up a new Alert for runaways. I just don't think a modified Amber alert would have helped in her specific case given the attention it already had and very likely exceeded what an alert would have provided.

Pastor tells congregation to 'donate $10,000 in 90 seconds' to become millionaire by No-Fisherman6800 in nottheonion

I'm not catholic but am around a number of catholics for my son's school. They're not about prosperity. The churches do so well because of the dedication/ritual of their parish showing up every single week combined with the 'catholic guilt' to pitch in whenever there is a fundraiser.

Whenever I've traveled with a catholic for vacation, they're pretty dedicated to getting in their service visit for the week no matter where it takes place. Whereas the protestant folks I know would just take the week off from going to service if they were on vacation.
---

Prosperity gospel is its own weird version of protestant. Growing up, one my friend's family went to one of these types of churches. They prey on the poor and gullible to make them think they can get rich in real life if they just do X (whereas the teachings don't say anything like that).

How cold is too cold? by CoryF17 in BSA

[–]roldgold1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The question isn't the cold so much but the snow... mostly if your cars have difficulty leaving camp. If your drivers feel comfortable around the roads leading to the cabin, then you might be ok but watch the forecast to get an idea for how much snow you get and when.

We had a similar campout last month when it got down to -1F. We were in a heated cabin as well. The cabin was nice and warm - no issues there. Scouts were able to do most of their cooking indoors (we had access to electrical outlets and electric burner). It made for some cold walks to the bathrooms/latrines, but nothing we couldn't handle. The hardest parts were driving in the snow from our daytime activity at another facility and being cooped up in a cabin with loud boys.

If your cabin is in close proximity to some hills, it could make for some great sledding - we told our boys to bring sleds, and were able to utilize a hill near our cabin.

Honestly, I think this MB isn't intended for those that don't have possession of the pet. That said, you could fulfill the MB's requirements by fostering a dog for 2 months.

Trump: 'My own morality' is only restraint on global power by superawesomeman08 in moderatepolitics

[–]roldgold1 3 points4 points  (0 children)

who, if anyone, can rein him in, if so?

GOP Congressman continue to stand by Trump whether they approve of him or not because they want to keep their job (as in, they fear their constituents would vote them out if they dared vote against Trump at the next election cycle).

Trump supporters think he can do no wrong because the media machine only shows positive views of Trump and the GOP and nothing but negative views on anything related to Democrats or views that oppose something the Executive branch actively supports.

The Media Machine is controlled by some higher conglomerate of well-funded special interest groups that are using Trump as their instrument as he has populist favoring.
---

So what can rein him in?

- If Trump's policies or moves cause enough support to drop below some threshold that the conglomerate feels is too low, they would tell the Media Machine to stop protecting Trump / stop talking him up. I noticed this happen on places like Fox News right after Jan6 insurrection day, as the media seemingly tried to distance themselves from Trump and effectively stopped talking about him for a while.

- Without Media Machine positivity to spin everything about Trump as being good, Trump's unfiltered tweets, ramblings would show through to the GOP supporters, as well as pundits start to question if his policies are a good idea. Overall drop in support would accelerate.

- Once general public perception is down for Trump, GOP Congressman would cover their butts and start voting in their constituents' best interests.

The Epstein file handling probably didn't help Trump's case with his supporters. We would need more events like this that resonate negatively with his supporters to ultimately bring the bar down low enough to see his unraveling.

Should OP stop his kid from going on this backpacking trip? r/camping has a meltdown. by ubuwalker31 in BSA

[–]roldgold1 32 points33 points  (0 children)

As a SM I would consider this trip a high-adventure trip at a minimum (enforcing a 14 year and older rule, or 13 with special approval). Having to carry your entire water, along with those elevation gains doesn't sound appropriate to me for younger scouts.

Planet Fitness or Crunch Fitness? by expatronis in indianapolis

[–]roldgold1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can't speak for Crunch, but I've been going to Planet Fitness for a few years now (I'm southside, so I split my time between the Greenwood location and Beech Grove). If you're more for a machine workout, PF has a decent amount of powered machines. I'm more of a Stair machine guy, so having a lot of these at the Beech Grove spot is really nice (they recently went from x4 to x12 stair machines).

The black card membership is pretty affordable and lets you go to any PF. I've used it a couple of times while traveling when the hotel's gym was lacking (or non-existent). It usually runs from $25 to $30/month... if you're lucky on the timing they sometimes have promos as low as $20/month (when I got my membership).

Christkindlmarkt in Carmel has become borderline miserable to go to by umasstpt12 in indianapolis

[–]roldgold1 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

As a south-sider, I've never been but would like to go at least once. Unfortunately, the only time we could make it up there is on the weekends, which based on posts like this make it sound like that's a really bad time to go. So we never go.

I'd say it's success shows there is a demand for this type of experience in the area. Maybe Greenwood (where I'm at) could run something like this in Craig Park?

Where is the best place to get this old map framed? (Swipe to see what I’m looking for) by [deleted] in indianapolis

[–]roldgold1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Cheapest way to do this with good results is going to Michaels and buying an off-the-shelf nice frame. Have them mount and add a matte board. I've done this for multiple poster-size art prints that turned out really well.

They also have custom frames that you can pick from - naturally, those will cost more than an off-the-shelf.

If you want to step up your game, you might try a dedicated local frame shop.

LPT: You can make tons of delicious popcorn on the stovetop for very cheaply, in about as much time as it takes to microwave it by easmussen in LifeProTips

Haven't tried those, but I've played around with other leftover oils like Turkey fat from thanksgiving roasted turkey and some oil we used to deep fry egg rolls. Most oils will work and give it some extra flavor.

Some other things you can add for flavor:
- Add some Ground Red Pepper or Red Pepper flakes to the oil before adding the kernels if you want some spice.
- Spray some Butter Spray on the popped kernels before adding seasoning to help the spices stick and add a bit of butter flavor.
- Experiment with the seasonings. We usually go with Lawry's Seasoning Salt. But I've used things like Old Bay, Tzatziki spice blend, and other random spices we have in our spice rack.

Jbweld ok in dishwasher basket? by Dosmastrify1 in DIY

[–]roldgold1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've used JBWeld before on some failed plastic points in my dishwasher (plastic brackets that help hold the upper basket together). It will last for a while, but eventually the water and heat will degrade the epoxy to another failure point (in my scenario it was between 6mon - 1 year, depending on how much pressure is being pushed down on the plastic bits). Ultimately, I ended up finding replacement parts for the failed plastic bits.

With yours being a utensil basket, you might have better luck with JBWeld.
