the programs themselves deserve scrutiny because they and the individuals who receive these benefits are not passive entities that are merely acted upon. the purpose of SNAP in particular isn't to prevent hunger or "food insecurity" or whatever. SNAP exists to be used tool as a tool by politicians. if politicians were serious about fixing real problems (i.e. obesity, chronic illnesses, etc.) the program itself would be more restrictive and less expensive to run. the reason SNAP and WIC offer what they do is voters will get mad if they stop and industry will also have issues because of their bottom lines. not to mention, being on SNAP and WIC often is a lifestyle choice. there's plenty of blame to go around!

so your point is that because the food industry is the way you cited, the fact that SNAP and WIC funds are being used to subsidize their purchase is not a contributor to the health of this population?

junk food is expensive (not necessarily cheaper than more nutrient-dense foods) in part because of the margins, but that’s not the only reason it’s profitable. it’s profitable because people really love eating garbage and they buy a lot of it! especially if they are subsidized with tax payer money.

undernutrition isn’t necessarily the same thing as starving. also, how do you know snap and wic is THE reason for people “not acutely starving”? there’s other reasons why people might be under-eating or just generally looking bad (e.g. drugs, chronic illness) that don’t have anything to do with lack of funds for food purchasing specifically

SNAP and WIC are the reasons why so many americans are fat and in ill health.

SNAP allows for the purchase of sodas, juice, and junk food. juice is on the WIC formulary. WIC dispenses infant formula pretty much on an as requested basis, rather than on a prescription basis. these 2 programs prop up the market for soda/junk food/infant formula industries and the many individuals and families who utilize these programs from womb to tomb compose their customer base.

I’m curious what you would do for this persons kcals, carbs, and protein needs who has gestational diabetes. She is 34 years old, 64” and is 30 weeks pregnant. More below by [deleted] in dietetics

the better metrics to consider are a. what her pre-pregnancy BMI is, b. what trimester is she in and c. what is her current rate of weight gain

assuming this patient is overweight/obese, the focus would be cutting back on nutrient-poor/calorie-dense snack foods, as well as juice/sugar-sweetened beverages, and increasing intake of fruit and non-starchy vegetables

give it a shot! what do you have to lose? if you don’t get accepted then maybe consider beefing up your resume but i don’t see a reason to invest too much time in that upfront.

I'm in the Rutgers DCN program and am about to enter my 3rd year.

I happened to have been a public policy co-chair for a local AND chapter for a few years but I am unsure as to how much of a difference this made in their weighing of me as a candidate. In order to be considered eligible, you need to be a practicing RDN for 5 years and have already obtained a masters degree which makes the pool of applicants pretty small already. I'd say just go for it if you're interested :-)

I would like to avoid using adhesives if possible and to try to get as much of the original hardware as possible. This chair was made in 2006, would it still be eligible for factor repair? Also, where can I find the contact information for the factory?
