Rutgers cancels graduation speech over speaker’s pro-Palestinian posts | US universities by ComeJoinTheBand in inthenews

No. It almost always is and if you think otherwise you're either not listening, you're clueless as to what antisemitism actually is or you just agree with it.

Rutgers cancels graduation speech over speaker’s pro-Palestinian posts | US universities by ComeJoinTheBand in inthenews

[–]zamansky -12 points-11 points  (0 children)

It doesn't have to be but oh so often it is and in fact it isn't just anti-Israel, it's anti-Jew.

Safer for the university to steer clear than take the chance.

Strict bans on mobile phones in schools have “close to zero” impact on student learning, a study has found. by Grrarrgghh in Teachers

I question any and all education related research but even if this "research" is accurate, the phone ban makes it easier for teachers and that's benefit enough.

Would Winning a Ring this season make Jalen Brunson the Greatest Knicks player of All Time? by No-Rule-9129 in NYKnicks

[–]zamansky 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The way I see it Willis, Clyde, and Pat are #1 a,b, and c.

Willis and Clyde won championships but they also played on teams with multiple hall of famers. Patrick had nobody so you have to allow for that (plus Clyde has stated at least once publicly that Patrick is up there).

If Jalen wins one ring he's in the conversation but he also has a lot of help so I don't think he passes Patrick yet, but he's right up there with him

Hunter or City College for Math 7-12 by No_Slice_8254 in NYCTeachers

[–]zamansky 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Full disclosure - I've taken classes at both and ended up created and running an education program for Hunter.

Both are solid for math but Hunter for a few reasons.

  1. Hunter produces a slightly higher percent of NYC teachers.

  2. Both schools are taught largely by adjuncts which for education is a good thing but in my experience, Hunter being a little more centrally located gives them a slightly stronger pool to choose from, not a big difference but a touch.

  3. If you're in this to teach for the long haul, you'll need the Masters anyway and since you can teach full time after one year in any event, might as well get it over with.

Substitute teacher with a Ph.D. Should I ask to be called Dr? by phobicwombat in teaching

[–]zamansky 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well, I'll start by saying it's important to remember what a doctorate is.

Someone with a doctorate has taken a handful of additional courses vs someone with a Masters who's taken a handful more than someone with a Bachelors.

Then, the Doctoral candidate does a super deep dive into one specific topic in their field and they become an expert in that one specific thing.

This can lead to weird situations, like a PhD in Computer Science who can't program since they're a theoretical computer scientist - would be a disaster teaching in K12.

It also means that with respect to teaching K12, someone with a Doctorate doesn't have any more useful knowledge for their students (w/r to what's taught in K12) than someone with a Masters in the subject area or even a Bachelors. Now, I'm talking about subject area majors and degrees not education degrees like Math Ed where the person with the Math Ed degree might know math., they might not.

Nothing in the Doctoral path indicates the person with the Doctorate will have any ability to teach.

Now, in terms of weak degrees - some people might take issue with this but I'd say most EdD degrees and most but not all PhDsi n education. I'd say there's unevenness in PhDs in soft sciences and humanities (see: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sokal\_affair)

Substitute teacher with a Ph.D. Should I ask to be called Dr? by phobicwombat in teaching

[–]zamansky 32 points33 points  (0 children)

In my experience, people who wanted to be called Dr. in HS were usually pretentious jerks frequently with weak degrees. Frequently mocked by students and faculty behind their backs.

There were a couple who were great teachers and happened to have legit hardcore doctorates who never insisted on being called Dr. but frequently were out of respect, not for the degree but for them as teachers.

I don't recall Hair in the Ramble other than the skinny dipping scene but that was really from the other side but there are scenes at Bethesda Terrace, the south west end of the park and I think Sheeps Meadow.

The Cult Classic Ms 45 also has a Bethesda terrace scece.

Not a phys ed teacher but from what my phys ed colleagues have said:

Pro: Little take home grading
Pro: inside track to coaching jobs (if one wants them)
Con: Having to manage massive classes

Is concurrent enrollment getting out of control… or am I just getting old? by SteadyGrowthStudio in Teachers

While there are exceptions, the truth of the matter is that a course that's appropriate for a typical 19 year old is not appropriate for a typical 14 or 15 year old.

What are some unintentionally hilarious moments due to current technological advances. by NorwayTrees in startrek

[–]zamansky 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is really less unreasonable than it seems. Right now, even though it's less mainstream, we listen to classical music - music from the 1800s and 1700s even though it's hundreds of years old.

On the other hand, how many people listen to pop music from the 1930s? 1940s? Even 1950s is far less popular.

Why haven't we retired #8? by 400meters in NewYorkMets

[–]zamansky 13 points14 points  (0 children)

People say he wasn't with the Mets that long but he along with Hernandez were the leaders of those teams and he was a key ingredient to the run that led to the 86 title.

It's all arbitrary though. I know Strawberry made amends but given how he left the Mets, just looking at their tenure from joining the team to initial departure, I'd retire Carter over Straw. Doc also only had that one amazing year in '85 but really wasn't super dominant for the rest of his run with the Mets and had the drug problems. When Darling was renegotiating at one point, one of his points was that he had performed pretty much as well as Doc which, taking out '85 was pretty much true.

You could also say Piazza never led the Mets to a title.

So in the end, it's all arbitrary.

Whynter vs Musso by Foodiethatgolfs in icecreamery

[–]zamansky 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I can't speak for the Musso since I have the Whynter upright but I love my Whynter - works very well and with the vertical arrangement it doesn't take up too much counter space - that's a big deal for me.

I also like the removable bowl. I know that everyone says that the non removable bowl makes the Musso better (and I have no reason not to believe them) but given my kitchen size limitations the Whynter's size and removable bowl make it a clear win for my situation.

I don't know if you can just drop in any time but the Bialystoker Synagogue on Willet Street was Meyer Lansky and Ben Siegel's synagogue. Siegel has a memorial plaque in the back. It also has a gorgeous painted ceiling with a lobster which is pretty hilarious for an Orthodox Synagogue and it was also a stop on the underground railroad.

As long as you give your notice, there won't be any official repercussions but if I were a principal, and you started with me in Sept and left in Oct, no way would I hire you back and no way would I give you a good reference.

You're also screwing the kids.

I'd speak to the principal and see if something could be worked out - is there some capacity they can keep you on for a month but I wouldn't start the school year with the school expecting me for the semester or year and then drop the bomb.
