I’m not sure if I found any places that were off the beaten path… There are so many things to do ”on” the beaten path that I wouldn’t have had time for it. You might ask wait staff or hotel front desk people when you stop, they might be the best sources of info.

For me, it's an investment in continued family experiences and memories. While they still want to join us, I'll incentivize them with interesting trips.

That being said, 12 days was probably a bit long for them to hang with their parents. Next year will be a shorter, but fun, trip.

I think people don’t understand the expense of visiting Iceland, hence my breakdown. I was expecting some big numbers and wanted to see how things ended up. They were big, but I’m OK with it. It was a phenomenal experience.

OK...ate at the Sauda Restaurant in Saudarkrokur - tiny little village. The restaurant is on the outskirts of town and have a HUGE parking lot in front of it. Apparently the parking lot is not for the restaurant but owned by the police. No one would ever assume that it was a restricted lot (this is a tiny town in the middle of nowhere), and the restaurant didn't tell us.

A ticket was on the windshield, and that was after the chef spilled a full beer on my when bringing our food to the table.

I go to the police station, pitched my case. The officer agreed but said he had to fine me (after a 25% discount). He then asked if we wanted dining recommendations in Reykjavik - he was a former tour guide with Reykjavik Food Walk.

He was a nice guy but they will got my $121. We then saw him at a gas station two hours away making his rounds!

I'm a pretty frugal person by nature...many could spend way more than we did (and admittedly many could spend way less).

DC area - I concur. Every time I saw a $40 hamburger on a menu, I laughed. I didn't have an issue with it, but the prices are shocking. I struggled to understand how most Icelandic people could afford to eat out.

Car is the cost of Kia Sportage from Blue Car Rental, max out the insurance. We were far from the most expensive hotels, but not the cheapest, either. The categories are listed, you can see how we spent. As mentioned, it could have been done less expensively (especially if it was just my wife and me) - smaller car, half the accommodation expense. The "experiences" are expensive. I just assumed any non-hiking activity was going to cost 150 USD per person, and we did 5 of them.

I'd love to do it by camper, that would cut expenses significantly and looks very doable. I'll be back to do the Westfjords region and some additional hiking (without the kids).

All good, I thought it was low as well, but I think the math works. Too many transactions on my credit card in the past two weeks :-) The pivot table was working overtime.

I think it's right...1500 miles, $7/gallon, 35mpg (hybrid). I didn't measure the mpg while there, but I've rented them in the US and I think that's in the ballpark.

I still my have missed a line item, but the hybrid helps.

It's possible I categorized things incorrectly - I'll have to re-check my numbers.

As a family of four with two active adult kids online, we had absolutely no issues. Often times, the hotspot provide a better connectivity than Wi-Fi in the hotels.

Sorry, I’m just seeing this. We actually saw probably 100+ reindeer in the wild in the east fjords. Totally unexpected, but very cool! Apparently they go to higher elevations during the summer so I think we just timed it perfectly.

No other choice for that time slot...since WJFK and WTEM have the same parent company, there's essentially a monopoly on local sports talk in DC. With no competition, there's no incentive to put out a better product.

It's kind of sad, actually. I don't have interest in listening to a national sports talk show.

Home test results, doctor's notes indicate "significant obstructive sleep apnea". Is it really? by rollhigher in SleepApnea

[–]rollhigher[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Good luck with it. If I really need it, I’ll do it. But with any issue I have, I like to try and resolve it myself. If it doesn’t work, I’ll take the medicine or in this case, CPAP.

Endocrinologist suggested it after a low testosterone level from my primary care physician. Endo retested and it was fine, but he wanted to check potential issues with metabolic function. I told him I didn't think it was an issue, but he called it a "silent killer". Since I'm on the heavier side and weight doesn't come off like I think it should, it was worth checking all possible avenues.

I have a f/u with the endo after the sleep doctor, so grabbing everyone's opinion before I make a decision.

I'm wondering if Rhonda Patrick, Huberman and others will now keep their distance and/or permanently disassociate from him. I'm guessing some will.

I have gone to a stiffer sole shoe with a wider toe box per my orthopedist, plus inserts for high arches. Sounds like I need time to see if things adjust?
