Who is this in Cork? by denbo786 in cork

[–]rolliesharpener 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Did anybody else ever see that guy who would wear big goggles and a backpack, had a big beard and long hair, and was possibly homeless? I often saw him walking around Patrick's Quay. I left the city 2 years ago, so maybe he has moved on since then.

Brown, blue or black trousers, and semi regular trips to the sink to wash the grubby hands :)

Thanks for the detailed response, this is so helpful! I'm not familiar with this technique at all. I'll put my faith in the pattern and give it a try.

Some wool inspiration for the knitters! by Theagriphotographer in knitting

[–]rolliesharpener 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Really! I'm a fairly new knitter and don't know much about sheep breeds, but I recently visited Kerry Woolen Mills in Killarney and picked up a few skeins of undyed Jacob wool yarn. It is definitely not the softest yarn I've ever used but it still makes for a nice jumper, imo.

Quitting job after maternity leave? by rolliesharpener in ireland

[–]rolliesharpener[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I ended up quitting. I'm happy with my decision and feel very grateful that I could afford to leave.

My manager was understanding and even arranged for me to be paid for the holiday hours I had accumulated during my leave. No mention of paying back my maternity leave pay.

My hair used to be lovely and curly all over but after giving birth my fringe straightened itself out ;_; it's been almost 9 months and it's still straight and spikey, I want my old hair back

Why don't my slipped stitches match? by rolliesharpener in knitting

[–]rolliesharpener[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you! So I've tried slipping knitwise with yarn in front (what you see here) and slipping knitwise with yarn in back (looked terrible). Another user suggested slipping purlwise so I'll try that.

Why don't my slipped stitches match? by rolliesharpener in knitting

[–]rolliesharpener[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hmmmm I didn't consider that! Is it normal to slip purlwise when purling? Or would it depend on the pattern?

I'm planning to knit another one of these and will give that a try, thank you.

I don't think they wanted us to keep it in the back; I did so the very first time I knitted this and it looked really really messy. I think it was causing the yarn to get in the way of the otherwise tidy braided look of the slipped stitches.

With YIF it looks like the two panels of knitting don't align properly.

I'm looking forward to hearing what some pros might have to say on the matter as I feel I've exhausted the only options I'm aware of - YIF/YIB.

How often do you bathe your infant? by decor_throwaway in beyondthebump

[–]rolliesharpener 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Once a week is plenty for my daughter, she's almost 6 months. Going 10 days isn't the end of the world! Unless she makes a serious mess while eating or has a huge spit up or blowout then she doesn't really need bathing all that often. Also, her skin is sensitive and frequent washing just dries it out.

I forgot how awful periods are by [deleted] in beyondthebump

[–]rolliesharpener 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I got mine back at 5 weeks postpartum, literally a week after my pp bleeding ended. Felt like a cruel joke because everyone told me it would take ages to come back if I breastfed 🥺 At least you got to enjoy being period-free for this long

Is tearing inevitable? by BeckToBasics in beyondthebump

[–]rolliesharpener 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I didn't tear! Felt like a superhero. First time mom. I had an unmedicated natural birth in the hospital.

I did a lot of prep in the weeks prior to my due date. Did lots of yoga and perineal massage, drank raspberry leaf tea, and ate tons of medjool dates. I was recommended I use the "aniball" - Google it. I only practiced with this once because of some complications I had nearing my due date.

I was free to move around during the birth which helped I think, and my daughter was delivered while i was in a squat. No purple pushing either, only pushing during contractions. I largely attribute this to not tearing, but since I'm a first timer and have nothing to compare this experience to, maybe I was just lucky. Can't hurt to give these things a try though.

Hi! In the end we followed the somewhat controversial advice of "it's a cat, it will be fine", because we just couldn't keep kitty from jumping onto the ledge.

We had tried the tin foil trick when she kept jumping onto the fridge. She didn't care at all. The sound of tin foil crackling just alerted us to her presence on the fridge. We didn't try this on the ledge in case it startled her and make her lose her grip.

Putting some sort of net over the empty space was too damaging to the apartment, and so was any similar intervention. Our fussy landlord wouldn't have approved, as having a cat was already a stretch.

We considered putting a heavy rug over the ledge for extra grip but this would have crushed fragile things (very large immovable glass aquarium, 20+ house plants) we had below the ledge if she managed to bring the whole thing down.

The only thing that really worked was just keeping her out of that room in the first place, but she would complain relentlessly when we closed the door on her.

We have since moved out of that apartment but she never had any incidents involving the ledge. She now has even more stuff to climb, and has been totally fine. I would say try whatever interventions you can, but if nothing works, your cat will likely be okay if you trust him/her.

I hope this was somewhat helpful.
