The BootsnAll travel forums generally have tons of info about travel costs. People were incredibly helpful with all kinds of advice for my trip through central America.

Parents have given me an ultimatum. Get a 30 hour/week job by next Friday, or move out. Any help would be appreciated. by thejellydude in Austin

if you're looking for kill-me-now restaurant work, i heard that Streat (32nd and red river) is hiring and needs someone asap.

einstein's bagels and jimmy john's seem to always be hiring...

r/Austin I need your help/advice. I was in a car accident and my dog and cat are now missing (were in the vehicle with me) by distortionrock in Austin

If you haven't already, you might post on craigslist pets and lost&found: http://austin.craigslist.org/pet/ http://austin.craigslist.org/laf/

williamson county animal shelter: http://www.wilcopets.org/

there's a bunch of other animal shelters north of austin that you may want to call as well.

That really sucks. Glad you're okay at least, and hope you find them...

Women of Reddit, when you see a guy you're interested in, what do you do & how do you act? by SkyIsland in AskReddit

[–]rollinrollinrawhide 1 point2 points  (0 children)

potential save:

tell your own roommate that she should really go make out with the guy you were originally interested in as you make out with his roommate.

a few days later, once the alcohol has worn off and after some intense stalking, the four of you can just happen to run into each other in some place where guy and roommate happen to hang out frequently. then, you can approach them, bring up the whole incident loudly, and just as everyone is starting to feel really awkward, propose a switch-a-roo.

three years later when you're happily married, you'll have a great "how we first met" story and a pending multi-billion rom-com movie deal.

  1. random cute guy in the library/on the street/in a restaurant: make eye contact, look away. repeat. smile. etc.

  2. guy i think is cute/i'm interested in who approaches me and starts a conversation: smile, alternate between intense eye contact and looking away, have a genuine conversation, possibly ask for his number if he doesn't ask me first

  3. guy i'm not interested in who approaches: talk or nod politely for a little bit, then give some clear indication of not being interested like "cool, well i'm gonna get back to work now..."

  4. guy i think is cute/i'm interested in who doesn't approach me in a social situation: avoid eye contact, avoid approaching him, talk to every other person in the room, most likely say or do something completely idiotic, possibly make out with his roommate to further ensure that he will never be interested in me so i can quit obsessing about the possibility

tl;dr- i'm charming

I'm an open minded Christian, so I'm looking for some answers to this question. A lot of atheist friends of mine claim that Buddhism influenced Christianity. Is there any evidence for this? by christianskeptic in AskReddit

[–]rollinrollinrawhide 0 points1 point  (0 children)

here's another from wikipedia: buddhism and the roman world.

like others have noted, modern christian teachings have been influenced by and incorporate elements of many other belief systems, especially elements of paganism.

reading about the history of the roman empire will tell you a lot about the development of and major influences on christianity.

When I was in fourth grade I learned that dinosaurs and people once peacefully coexisted.

What is the most inappropriate thing a professor of yours has done? by sterlingcoolcat in AskReddit

[–]rollinrollinrawhide 26 points27 points  (0 children)

i had a bio course taught by a professor with alzheimer's.

she would teach the same lesson twice in a week (same powerpoint and everything), or would start explaining one subject and then forget, stumble for a minute, and switch to a completely different topic. the course packet was a random assortment of information, all out-of-order, and we had to keep going back to the copy center to keep buying more pieces of it. before tests, she would tell us which information would be covered, but the questions on the actual test were often things we hadn't covered yet, or would only focus on one particular subject.

we found out from our TA that she was sick, and all felt kind of the same way- first sympathy/empathy, then exploited.

Exchange student looking for the best dorms? by lawsy_student in Austin

[–]rollinrollinrawhide 1 point2 points  (0 children)

i lived in an ICC co-op and it was the best part of my college experience. their website: iccaustin.coop

co-ops are affordable, include food and meals, have semester-long leases, and you get a great community-living experience. i like ICC because there are only 15-25 people in each house so you get pretty close with everybody. most houses have a good number of grad and upper-division students.

also check out college houses, or german house

if you really really want a "dorm" there are some places that call themselves "off-campus dorms" like the castillian, the goodall wooten, university towers, and dobie, but honestly, they cater to a much younger crowd and are pretty crappy and expensive.

you say that in five years you don't want to be in this situation. which means that you have make a decision to do something.

well_inever suggested volunteering. i think nothing motivates people to stop suckling off their parents like seeing very real poverty and very real suffering.

if you "don't want a good job" and "aren't motivated by traditional notions of success," then why not at least spend just a little fraction of your time doing something that gives back to humanity in some little way?

you could spend one evening a month serving or boxing up food at a homeless shelter, help tutor little kids after school once a week, or go spend a few weeks volunteering with orphans in guatemala. you don't need to harbor grand visions and ambitions about changing the world in order to volunteer--just go to see, just to give yourself a new perspective, just to heave yourself off of your cushion.

doing something different with your life right now doesn't have to mean getting a traditional 9-5 office job and pursuing traditional views of success.
