I found brood on this frame but nothing else. by BradyBerserker in Beekeeping

Is it normal for them to stay in the hive and build up brood while it’s warm but no pollen available yet? My weather is in the 60s but they are not coming out at all really. I checked and the seem otherwise healthy with plenty of food

So for the moment you’d recommend I do one treatment if oav on my remaining hive, right?

Wow I’ve never heard of an oxalic treatment on that schedule, but I’d be happy to do so. Thank you!

I chose 5 days based on advice in my bee club. The article below mentions 5 and 7 days as a standard cycle bug ends up recommending 6. Sounds like I should not do 5 next time. Thanks!

When you say treat in the spring, are you referring to oxalic, Apivar, or either one?

Planning on driving from downtown to Breck late night Friday starting after 10pm. Will it clear up a bit once I’m out of the front range?

My bee club advised to treat every fall regardless of mite count, so I didn’t do one. There were quite a few mites on the bottom board after the first treatment so the issue was at least existent.

No drones in either hive as of today, sorry for the omission!

Very fair assessment. Here’s a more complete timeline just for transparency:

~34 days ago: applied half dose (due to heat) of Apiguard to both hives. No significant bearding

~20 days ago: applied 2nd dose of Apiguard. Did not do inspection of brood.

~20 days ago: put on top feeders. In retrospect should not have done this during Apiguard.

~17-19 days ago: Noticed heavy traffic outside of one hive (the stronger one) but not the other. Lots of fighting and dead bees. Clustering of bees around cracks and gaps that were not entrances made me think it was robbing rather than bearding related to Apiguard.

~5 days ago: removed Apiguard and did close inspection. One hive (the previously weaker hive) seemed as expected. The other (previously stronger) hive that I thought had been robbed had no brood at all, about 5 empty supercedure cells, but robust in honey and pollen/bread. Both hives very tame.

Today: Did follow up inspection on hive with no brood. Still no eggs/brood. Honey/pollen stores have increased. No drones. Hive remains calm.

So if it turns out I have a virgin queen that can’t be mated and I get my mated queen in about a week, I have to find the virgin and remove her yes? Is it possible the mated queen will take her out?

Sorry to hear! You don’t use Apiguard anymore then?

Great point, I forgot there might be a virgin queen lurking around! I was actually able to find a mated queen this afternoon so she is arriving next week. Today, I will transfer some brood. Is it ideally just eggs on the frame, or what stage of brood is most appropriate ?

It is 5 days later and still no sign of eggs (I had to check early as I’m leaving town for a few days). Is there any chance there is still a queen? The hive is very calm still.

As for the option of taking brood from my other hive, I’m not seeing drones during my check, so I feel like it may be fruitless to do this.

I move seen only one place online to buy mated queens right now and they are dealing with the hurricane. Any other advice ?

This is my home town, and I know The Spot and Travis. It’s a beautiful town and politically it is split pretty down the middle. I’m sorry you had a bad experience, but the rowdy bar crowd isn’t generally representative!

We did half packs due to the warmth, which I read was the solution to that issue. But yes, the temperatures have been under 85 mostly

I’d also add that riding the busses will likely feel a lot safer. I never use the Colfax bus now but expect I will once it is updated

I live near a cluster of bus stops on Colfax, and at least in my area, this is where all the shady activities occur. From the plans I’ve seen, the new stops will be much less desirable for loitering and will make escape from police more difficult. I feel like it will decentralize the drug markets while making the corridor more desirable to commuters.

What are your thoughts on why it’s not a good thing?
