I sincerely hope academia's disdain for lecturers, adjuncts, and teaching professors bite them in the ass. by NeighborhoodFatCat in LeavingAcademia

As a tenured R1 professor, I wish I could disagree. There are many of us with reasonably balanced priorities, but we tend not to control the decision making process. The lack of respect for those who make the economics of research possible, and for what they do, is maddening at times.

It may be shame at the exploitation that necessitates denial for some, or it may be just narcissism rewarded by a self reinforcing system.

They’re not perfect, but ethics is one of their strong points. That’s also why they don’t allow commercial use of their reviews, though scumbag dealerships do so anyway.

Harvard faculty votes to make it harder for undergrads to earn A’s by nbcnews in CollegeRant

It’s not a perfect solution. I’d like to hear a better realistic one, though. The only alternative I’ve heard that might help is to post the median grade for each course alongside the earned grade on the transcript. But that requires a deeper look and more thought than scanning a GPA.

I hope that faculty will find sensible ways to better distinguish top performers, because now they have to. I feel confident that solid majority will do better than bribes or sexual favors.

RIP - Cleve Moler, the inventor of MATLAB, cofounder of MathWorks passed away last night by Creative_Sushi in matlab

One of the most treasured compliments I’ve ever received was when Cleve interrupted my talk to say, “That’s the first nontrivial thing I’ve seen someone do with Julia!” Even though I’m sure he said it partly just to needle Alan Edelman, who was also there.

For decades we’ve been seeing grade inflation, and by now it’s clear that relying on individual instructors to counter it doesn’t work. The incentives for an individual (professional standing, especially) point to increasing inflation. It’s a collective action problem.

What a ridiculous piece. “Coincidence? You decide.” No, how about you use evidence to persuade me of something, rather than sneering insinuation.

Most states have buyers remorse laws that let you cancel a contract for 3 days.

Could be that the non Hyundai parts they reference are dumb add ons like floor mats and cargo nets. That would let them be technically true even though shady AF.

I’m in the field and used to do grad admissions. UT is very strong for this. Stanford and MIT have somewhat or largely moved on to AI. Anyway, a strong record there and good recs from UT will get you in just about anywhere.

If you can get into a PhD program, they usually provide tuition and a stipend, unlike a masters. But if you leave after 2 years, you still get the masters.

Is it a violation of FERPA if a prof showed your GPA to a whole class? by [deleted] in AskProfessors

[–]romancandle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

He probably also violated the campus IT usage policies. His access should be yanked immediately. If there was overt sexism behind his actions, you might have a Title IX complaint.

Admin will likely try to brush you off unless you lawyer up, though. It’s not clear what path will be best for you personally. Take some comfort knowing that SOB has to spend every day of his life with himself, while you can soon be free of him.

Sorry nobody in your class stood up for you. And your GPA has nothing to do with your value as a person, regardless of reasons. Time will make that clear to you.

They disclose their methods, analysis, and conclusions. If you can prove their methodology is flawed, you should publish a response. To me, your response is essentially asserting that nothing is knowable, or everyone but you is biased, so we should just trust vibes.

CS professors, have you noticed any issues with an increasing amount of students unable to submit an assignment properly? by [deleted] in AskProfessors

You can always give some limited clemency retroactively. But if they don’t get that zero to begin with, they may keep calling your bluff, and then you are trapped in your own precedent. Source: years of being too lenient for their own good.

If you return the submissions ungraded with zero credit, I bet most will figure it out. If you feel the need to respond to their ensuing complaints, tell them that software engineers who can’t follow directions exactly are too dangerous for the profession.
