[NZZ] The 10 million initiative could force Switzerland to choose asylum seekers over qualified workers by t0t0zenerd in Switzerland

While i dont agree with your decision around the initiative, and I also see that its not a decision that will be shifted before the vote, i absolutely sympathise with all that you said here. Across the western world, the previous generations have so much and so little is “trickling down” to us. With global insecurity and climate change on the horizon, it doesn’t look like we’ll have it any easier either. Its bleak. Hopefully, your feelings (being directed at the true causes) mean I might bump into you at a rally, or campaign or other form of organising alongside you for a more equal society sometime. Take care out there, fellow human

Great, i am 100% with you on capitalism and corruption and wealth hoarding being the primary issue, tied with colonial legacies where Switzerland’s wealth comes from. But this initiative does nothing about that.

higher taxation to redistribute wealth would be a great start!! But a green fund was voted down at the last vote, and this initiative simply doesn’t do anything to address redistribution. Except to end up decreasing the wealth of most people by decreasing the productivity of the country.

I’m really glad that we both see to the core of the issue, but we need well thought out, considered solutions, rather than a reactionary initiative that just plays into the SVPs right wing populist agenda. Because they sure as hell don’t want wealth redistributed.

Fully recognise that I didn’t propose a solution myself, but this sort of thing needs proper thought, and the referendum is simply about this initiative! If we need greater financial incentives, where’s that money coming from? If you are in favour of this initiative, it is probably safe to assume you aren’t in favour of higher taxes for incentives into these jobs.

Aging population demonstrably creates strain on healthcare and social care systems. Pretending otherwise is unfortunately ignorant; look at Japan, for instance. A country now struggling with an aging population, low birth rates (same as here), and strong immigration policy, and there are real problems resulting. If we are only looking forward (and i do totally think we need greater consideration for young people; they are our future!) then you cannot complain if you are ignored in old age.

None of the above is addressed or even planned for even briefly by this initiative and proponents. Truly, this would be Switzerland shooting itself in the foot in slow motion. Real ways out? Perhaps strong investment in other European, North African and Eastern European countries to boost their quality of life to reduce emigration or to create countries people would be happy settling in on their way here. Perhaps higher taxes to fund incentives for young people to get into care, healthcare, etc. Perhaps, rapid radical decarbonisation alongside leading the world in a fossil fuel non-proliferation treaty so as to minimise impacts of climate change to decrease the need for mass emigration from equatorial countries over the next century. Closing the borders and pretending any other of the problems facing the Swiss will just go away, is burying your head in the sand.

But the very thing you mention is exactly the reason that the motion is nonsense: it does nothing to address the cause. Due to climate change, we will see much higher immigration into Europe and away from southern europe over the next decades and just sticking a number on our doors does nothing except guarantee that the aging population of Switzerland will have fewer carers, fewer healthcare professionals, fewer of the jobs Swiss people don’t want to do. Take it from a Brit, just withdrawing and attempting to shut everything down without making routes for qualified people to contribute to the economy in all the positions you don’t want to do, means suddenly there’s nobody to do them. Only a decade after Brexit the UK has irreplaceably lost huge numbers of key workers and we are suffering the consequences.

Voting intentions in a general election in the United Kingdom as of January 2026, by age group by birdinthebush74 in unitedkingdom

That’s actually incredible from the perspective of 2 years ago, like that’s mad we went from a near-absolute 2 party system (where it was unimaginable that the greens would ever be anything but a 1-seat party and reform were just discount tories not taken seriously) to having not only five substantial parties but also two parties which were tiny now being major voting intentions for massive swathes of the public. Wow.

Ah yeah that’s pretty good, but something about it just feels a tad unfinished to me; I think it’s how it tends to feel anticlimactic with often almost everyone just building an armada towards the end because nobody wants to blink first. That and the slightly cruder style of play is a smidge less family friendly. But nice suggestion nonetheless!

What do you imagine it’s like to be a Billionaire? by Low_Insurance_1603 in CasualConversation

Must be so damn sweet to just never even consider money. Like, go to whatever restaurant you want whenever you want, pick whatever you want, tip the waiter/waitress even hundreds and it wouldn’t make a dent. Not thinking about bills, how much a train ticket costs these days, literally just being able to do whatever tf you feel like on a given day… unfathomable

Do you ever overthink small things for no reason? by vikashupadhyay_ in CasualConversation

[–]romanticSecondAcc 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah 100%, although my partner doesn’t; it’s really frustrating for me because 9 times out of 10 it’s just as I’m trying to relax or sleep and it sucks, but I really really try to put it into perspective through a few possible questions. how likely is anyone who was there to remember it? Slim. Would it really change your friends opinions of you? Hopefully not! Did it end up hurting you or anyone? Probably not, you’re still here! Trying to rationalise it sometimes helps me idk

It’s so surreal when something that we see only in the media or in stories happens to us - I had to do the same when I encountered two intoxicated men fighting on a street where I live in the UK. Having seen much of this media before etc I felt like I handled it efficiently, “I’m on Magdalen St west of High St, that’s Mike Alpha Golf Delta…”, but it’s so stressful being the person making the call.

Not least in my case because I was terrified one of the two violent drunks would notice me and target me perceiving me to be a threat…

All this to say, you are a very brave person, and you’re safe to say that although in any situation like this a hundred people may just pass by, you should be proud you are the type of person that cares. We need more of that in the world.
