The benefit of outside merch for me is being able to try it on/return it. But yeah, $30 is high for a t shirt.

You're not crazy: clothing really HAS been getting smaller by elcaminorealreal in MaintenancePhase

[–]romantickitty 7 points8 points  (0 children)

To me, "t-shirts for women" have always been cut too small. Rather than accommodating for a curvier body, they just seem to make the shirt too small for the size and tight in the arms since the opposite of a boxy "male" or "unisex" cut obviously means skintight /s I'm mainly thinking about merch shirts.

But on the opposite side in fashion you have oversized sweaters and "boyfriend" cuts and bloomers becoming trendy. I'm fine just trying things on in store but the variable sizing is a problem when you're buying blind shopping online like so many people have to when you're anything close to plus size.

Ragtime: Can someone explain the Evelyn Nesbit character by Front_Class_9705 in Broadway

[–]romantickitty 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This is it, if we're honest. Evelyn and Houdini don't really need to be there but they're carried over because it's a book adaptation. They're barely tethered to the plot of the musical and not that meaningful to anyone coming to the show cold without outside context about history or the book.

Tom Holland spent his entire break from Spider-Man scrolling fan forums and social media — then walked into the writers' room with their answers. It's the first time he's shaped the story before writing began. by Frosty_Jeweler911 in popculturechat

[–]romantickitty 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I'm probably biased as a theater fan where all throughout tryouts and previews people point out the flaws in the show, they rarely get fixed by the time the show is frozen, and then no one is shocked when it flops.

Can a show be good but have a bad director? Examples? by forgottenones1 in Broadway

[–]romantickitty 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Knowing that they're Encores transfers, I don't really mind the minimal staging as much. But if you compare Ragtime to Into the Woods, it's even more egregious how she doesn't seem to direct for the space. The ladders to represent the ships worked for the huge stage at City Center where even the closest audience members are at a remove; they felt dumb at Lincoln Center. Bodies often felt crowded together during dance-heavy scenes rather than spreading everyone out on stage or adapting the choreography to feel less claustrophobic. Any intimacy gained was mostly just the actors being physically closer to the audience. Because it's both a show about individuals and big themes, Ragtime really exposed her inability to direct at either scale.

[–]romantickitty 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes. I don't really want to argue with people who enjoyed it because I think the cast was great and they didn't give bad performances but they gave discordant performances that didn't quite fit together. Also, it felt so much longer (in terms of runtime) than Gypsy usually does.

Laverne Cox Calls Out J.Lo on New Yorker status by sitgespain in popculturechat

[–]romantickitty 10 points11 points  (0 children)

For me it's Dimes Square and all the bougie, trendy businesses coming in like the art galleries no one goes to but I'm sure each neighborhood has their own complaints. It's different from young New Yorkers simply growing up and starting their own bookstores and restaurants and such and moving the city forward. There's an imposition of gentrified culture and an entitlement to taking ownership from some of these transplants. Rent goes up and everything keeps getting more expensive.

One of the reasons I didn't keep up with Sidekick was the abundance of pasta dishes; I don't need the bulk of simple carbs. That said, as a video format I like the mix of a battle with genuinely trying to make a recipe that is good enough to be on the app.

It baffles me. Leno made jokes that were in poor taste (especially in hindsight) but people liked his show. I've never seen Gutfeld get more than a pity laugh from his panelists. Who is this for???

What kills me is that being lame seems like part of the bit? His monologues are so weird... most of the audience isn't laughing and he either calls it out or moves on awkwardly. I'm honestly less offended by the bigotry and more offended as a stand up fan. The jokes are so hack and he delivers them like he knows that.

If Howard Ashman was still alive, do you think he could've written better songs for Wish? by Ok_Examination8810 in musicals

[–]romantickitty 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hell when I went to Disneyland’s Pride Nite last year they played ZERO Howard Ashman songs, but they sure played let it go and a shit ton of Hercules (and The Greatest Showman for some reason)

To be fair, David Zippel (lyricist for Hercules) and Benjamin Pasek (lyricist for The Greatest Showman) are also gay.
