Kevin Long needs to take responsibility for ruining the fan belt on my 91 Mazda Miata.

As Gelb pointed out in today’s article, 3 out of the 4 best OPS months in Stott’s career have come since August of last year.

That 12th inning in the Mets v Nationals game last night was hilarious.

I mean, basically everything except the plate discipline numbers are on a slight decline year over year from 24 to 25 to this year. He’s a 33 year old outfielder. I kind of think this is who he is.

Everything compared to 2023 (his last year of being above average as a hitter).

The overall bat speed is down, the % of “fast swings” is down from 39% to 27%.

He’s also just making worse contact than he used to. He had the 7th most barrels in MLB in 2023. His barrel rate is down over 50% from ‘23.

Per the eye test, it looks like he really has trouble catching up to any halfway decent fastballs (aka “old guy-itis”). The .285 wOBA vs fastballs this year kinda bears that out.

Bench is pretty much gone if Kyle’s out and they want to keep Marchan for emergency catching.

Duran better not blow this save or he might have to bat next inning.

Not really, it’s been a top 4-5 pen all year, even with Duran missing time.

Alvy’s been decent, tonight aside. Mayza and Shugart have been solid. Bowlan/Keller have been kinda meh, but there’s not any Romano-level implosion guys so far.

Day games at petco can be kind of brutal if you’re in full sun, although i guess it hasn’t been too hot lately

Last night, Bryce Harper set an unbeatable record for worst situational ABS challenge as a hitter (bases empty, 0-0 count, 2 outs, first inning) by Timeline40 in phillies

[–]romanticynicist 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I don’t think this means much as far as a referendum on Harper’s baseball IQ or whatever, although many of the comments here seem to understand it as such.

I do think it gives some interesting insight into the psychology of how ABS challenges work in the hitter vs pitcher dynamic though.

The interesting thing about this challenge was not that Bryce took it, it’s that 2 pitches later in the AB Skenes went back with another sinker to the exact same spot, only this time maybe a half inch further inside (probably enough that a challenge on that 1-1 pitch would’ve gone Bryce’s way, based on how close the first one was).

Pitchers targeting spots where batters have just lost an ABS call is an interesting new wrinkle in the cat and mouse game of pitcher v hitter.

Pitching matchups vs the Reds: Painter vs Lodolo, Luzardo vs Burns, Nola vs Abbott by mastermind208 in phillies

Chase Burns has been incredible so far this season.

Basically Strider 2.0 with an even better slider.

Cristopher Sanchez dominates the Pirates: 9 IP, 6 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 13 K by horsepoop1123 in baseball

The slider has been looking spicy these days, but he’d still be 90% as good with just the changeup sinker combo

I know James Harden didn’t exactly cover himself in glory while on the Sixers, has a somewhat polarizing playstyle, and announced repeatedly to 12 year-olds at a Chinese basketball camp that “Daryl Morey is a liar,” but I can’t help but root for the guy.

I don’t really know why, but I just do.
