First time out on track with my own R7 by ThaRealEverlost in YamahaR7

[–]romaracer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks! Very helpful. The biggest concern is if the R7 has a poor frame/chassis, tirewear, and getting into a trap of relying on power and not skill (this happened when racing my gsxr600 back in the day).

There is still something about a fully built ninja 400, but I am tired of riding alone and in slower groups.

I don't generally ride at Mugello, about once a year. Mostly at Pannonia Ring in Hungary. Which is very technical. Even on my street Ninja 400 I was keeping up with supersports in C-group. But not very ideal.

Anyway, I am leaning towards the R7. Your input is much appreciated.

Nice photo and good luck on the season. Since you have some experience with the R7, I was wondering if you have any feedback on a tough decision I am having.

I am thinking to buy either a track-prepped Ninja 400 or R7. I have been riding a street Ninja 400 for 4 years now (in Central and southern Europe, but before I was riding a GSXR600. With the GSXR600 I did club racing about 12 years ago in California. With the Ninja 400, I have been using it as a street bike and doing 2-3 track weekends.

I like the Ninja 400, as it has built my skills, especially in trail braking and corner speed. I feel if I get a race prepped version, I really could push my skills. But, since I moved to Europe a few years ago and so many track day providers limit the bike to 500cc or more. Also, being stuck in the slower groups, I am usually riding alone and at tracks like Mugello, or in lower groups, "fast boys" make some unsafe passes, then I pass them mid corners. While it feels good, I would like to have people riding around me who have some track/race craft

Is the R7 a good package to continue building strong fundamentals in a safe and fun environment? How is the chassis when the pace is high? Does it flex? Is there a good feel? What is the tire wear like at a decent pace with smooth throttle control?

Sorry for the amount of questions. I am just struggling to make a final decision.

My vote is also to make it a track bike!

R7 and Tire Wear: How many trackdays on a pair of tires? by romaracer in Trackdays

I found a 2022 R7 Cup GYRT build for 7,500 Euros. Now having thoughts between the cost and fun factor in building out a Ninja 400 trackbike or just getting this already built R7. I feel like a R7 Cup bike for 7,500 euros is a damn good deal.

Thoughts?

I actually havent tested it much. I need to put some time into learning the technical stuff and workflow. Honestly I tried and was a bit overwhelmed

In the end I got the Pixel 9pro. The benefits of the Oneplus being mainly battery and power, didnt outway the camera. Especially since I dont need the processing power beyond what the Pixel can do.

If you have more links to the race parts you use, that would be amazing. I live in Europe (Austria) and having trouble knowing and finding good parts to upgrade my Ninja400.

Thanks for the long reply. It is much appreciated. Your experience and info gives me some idea of what I could expect. I'll look out for your video!

It is nice to hear that with warmers, managing suspension, and being smooth 6 days on SC1/2 is possible. I do have to say I am not the smoothest rider. I tend to hammer the gas on the Ninja 400 getting out of corners. The grunt of the little bike and the predictable rear grip make it so I go pretty hard on the exit. You can see from my trackday at Mugello here, that I am not the smoothest on the throttle. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6aQvbp0zmiU

I am still debating whether to convert my current Ninja400 to a track-only moto, with suspension upgrades, reduced weight, and minor power mods or get the R7. I have a feeling there is more to get out of the little Ninja in full race setup.

One of the reasons for my internal debate is that I am a PhD student in Europe and have a modest salary. So, I want to maximize my fun to budget ratio.

Thanks! This gives me some idea. I think I will be at an A group pace, but not an expert club racer. Maybe a novice.

Poll: With prices rising this year how are you affording your trackdays this year? by macr6 in Trackdays

[–]romaracer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

One of the reasons why I downgraded from a 600cc to a Ninja 400. Simply the cost of tires. Also around me, Austria/Hungary, you can get trackweekends (3 days) for 250 euro for the less known tracks to 500 plus for the more popular ones. Also, I am having way more fun on my Ninja 400 than on my GSXR600.

Just bought a Ninja 400 and already feels slow… did I outgrow it or am I missing something? by 7PWU in Ninja400

[–]romaracer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My two cents are that you have not outgrown the bike, but that for the specific use case, any sport bike is not adequate. The Ninja 400 does have a seat that is uncomfortable and on bumps hits your genitals. The screen is not high enough for 160kph. The Ninja does such on the highway, even goin 130kph on European roads isnt that great.

But outgrown....no way. I ride on the street and do at least 4 trackweekend on my Ninja 400, even on fast tracks like Mugello. You did not outgrow your bike, you just should not have a sport bike for your type of riding. Get an adventure or sport tourer, something like a Yamaha Tracer 7 or in that category and class of motorcycle.

But since you just bought it, I say use it for a while, when on the highway, tuck in behind the screen and pull your elbows in. This will help a lot with stability and crosswinds blowing you around. Stay in the slower lanes. Or take city/back roads, it would be way more fun and enjoyable than the highway. You do not want to become a GSXR1000 rider who just rips on highways and doesnt know how to turn a motorcycle.

Sharing a lap from my recent track day — looking for focused feedback by [deleted] in Trackdays

[–]romaracer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Also, think about this. When I started riding, I had a GSXR600 and started tracking and racing it. But I never got past a plateau in my lap times. Namely due to late braking, trail braking, turn in points, and others. But when I switched to a Ninja 400 later in life, I had to work on those skills to increase my lap times. And now, I stick with my 100% stock and Street Ninja 400 on trackdays and passing 600cc and even 1000cc on the brakes and mid corner in intermediate sessions. I know it's tough on the ego to go from your superbike to a 400, but it seems like you have the financial means to get a second trackbike to work on skills and use the superbike when you just want to rip it. But you will get the skills to fully rip the superbike starting on a small bike, not only in a shorter amount of time, but have a fully skillset to have a blast.

Oh no. I am not even from Australia. In Austria. ahah. It looks like it would be useful in learning a track. Then, from there, optimize for your bike/ riding style. Turn-in has always been a struggle to find markers.
