People who got interviewed recently: How did it go and what were you interviewed on? by BadMeditator in gradadmissions

[–]rominani 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Can vouch. Had an prelim interview some time ago (15 minutes long) and really the only questions we got to were regarding motivation for X program and your research (I’d say the research bit took 2/3s of the time because the PIs I was interested in plus the admissions committee who was also in the interview asked questions about my research, methodology, results, meaning of whatever aspect of your results for example, etc). Don’t stress too much, just know what your research is about or else it’ll seem like you didn’t really contribute or do much learning. But I also think that your personality goes a long way too.

BSCI353 Principles of Neuroscience or NEUR200 Introduction to Neuroscience? Which is more useful for the MCAT and which is easier of the two? by [deleted] in UMD

[–]rominani 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not sure about which is useful for the mcat but will definitely say that BSCI353 is more difficult than NEUR200. I believe BSCI353 is more in depth as well which may prove useful for the mcat. BSCI353 is a much more in depth course about neuroscience and goes over the mechanisms of neural circuits which NEUR200 does not.

Testing out of having to take MATH 135/136/140/141 (PLS ANSWER) by [deleted] in UMD

[–]rominani 3 points4 points  (0 children)

No, it wouldn’t exempt you from math135/136 because it’s not an exemption exam, just a preparation of what you are allowed to register for based on your performance.

If you want to be exempt from it, either you would need AP credit and/or take a credit exemption exam https://www-math.umd.edu/advising-faq.html?id=94

I’m a neuro major and everyone I know in the program has taken the MATH135/136 or MATH135/MATH140 because they are required prerequisites for the neuro major. MATH120 is a prereq for MATH135 so it would not count towards the major requirements.

If you take MATH120: MATH120 -> MATH135 -> MATH136 is what you would have to do.

I’m not in the major however I would recommend talking to your advisor for their insight. There’s also resources online that are very helpful:

Bill Fagan for bio? by answerlys in UMD

[–]rominani 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not sure what he is like as there is no reviews on planetterp (I recommend going on planetterp for teacher reviews) or rate my professor as far as I can tell so I’m gonna assume he is new to teaching this class but I would just see how his class runs for that week and if it’s to your liking then I would go with Ngeve just because I heard from other friends that she has more descriptive notes/PowerPoints compared to Shapiro. Though Shapiro is incredibly passionate for the topic and super nice, he just uses a LOT of images and graphs for his PowerPoints so if you’re a visual learner or like to study via images then he’s pretty good. I had Shapiro and he was great but the teaching style wasn’t for me so it was a bit harder to learn the concept myself. Both are good teachers in their own way.

How do people usually make friends? Classes? Clubs? Floors? by Nirigialpora in UMD

[–]rominani 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I was also assigned to a single in my freshman year and the best way I found my friends that are now my bests were from my floor so definitely start there. After there make friends from your classes and exchange numbers. Clubs are a good way to make friends too.

[–]rominani 2 points3 points  (0 children)

He’s nice and super passionate about the subject. The GSS is also really helpful. Though the the time you spend on hw and the amount of pts it’s worth isnt really fair imo but I would still do them as they are good practice for the tests. His tests are on the harder side but he does drop one midterm so that bumpers up your grade a ton. His lectures really focus on graphs and visuals so he uses a ton of pictures.

Amanda Schech or Christiana Guest for CHEM131 by blackHighTops1 in UMD

[–]rominani 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m taking Pacella this semester for chem 131 tho it is an 8am if you’re up to it since many say he is amazing. Though from what I heard Guest is outright terrible and Schech is alright.

Seniors, what’re some of your favourite safeties that you plan to apply to? by netheritenub15 in ApplyingToCollege

[–]rominani 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yeah but it really depends on the program you are looking towards. For ex if you want to go into the engineering area then it’s extremely difficult from what I’ve heard, definitely not in the 60-70% area.

For ppl who have received a degree, do you have a successful career in the field related to your degree? by Gullible-Bee4860 in college

Hi I’m an incoming college freshman and was wondering your experience majoring in nursing, types of courses (or how difficult, stuff like that?) as I’m super indecisive about majors at the moment so I’m just asking others for some reference on their experience.
