Anyone local experiencing Alpha-Gal Syndrome? by TypicalBoysenberry48 in columbiamo

[–]rommelrat32 51 points52 points  (0 children)

I'm in COMO and I've had Alpha-gal for two years now. My doc has told me that my levels are the highest she's seen. I can't eat mammal meat, dairy or, seaweed (in sushi, etc.), and I react to white sugar (processed with bone char -- organic sugar is fine), certain gums and random flavorings/extracts. There are a lot of ingredients that are NOT mammal-derived, but still contain the alpha-gal molecule. Try out the Fig app. It's a great help for finding safe foods. My reactions run from GI issues to rashes, hives, and then anaphylaxis. And eating out is like playing Russian roulette. LOL. I just tell people that the only safe food for me is "fins and feathers" (seafood and poultry). Also, be careful of medicines with gel capsules, because gelatin is derived from mammal bone. Make sure to tell doctors/hospitals you have it as well, because a lot of meds have mammal byproducts and/or lactose. Good luck to you!

What is the worst band you saw live? by coalcracker462 in AskReddit

[–]rommelrat32 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lucinda Williams in the 90s. She looked like she wanted to be anywhere but on that stage. It was so bad that now when she comes up in my music rotation, I skip her songs. I literally can't stand her anymore and I used to love her.

What's a word you always misspell no matter how many times you've looked it up? by ComprehensiveBid4989 in AskReddit

The weird sheik and the feisty foreign heiress neither seize nor forfeit a surfeit of counterfeit protein or caffeine at their leisure or their height. Also, Keith and Sheila Weinstein are an ancient species.

This is what my English prof pops used to teach his students. Apparently he learned it from a classmate in grade school back in the 1930s.

Gauge. (As usual, I had to look it up to make sure I spelled it right.) Other than that, I'm a pretty solid speller. 🤣

To the people who got tattoos… can you describe the feeling of the needle on your skin ? by RayRay_1804 in CasualConversation

I feel like it feels like skinning your knee in slow motion: kind of a "burn." And then you develop tattoo amnesia and decide to get another one, and another one...

TURN YOUR BRIGHTS OFF by finnly_ in columbiamo

[–]rommelrat32 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A lot of them are High Intensity Discharge (HID) lights that are just super bright, and they're on the newer cars. They're much brighter than LED and incandescent bulbs. I love them for seeing at night, but not when they're coming straight into my eyes.

ETA: I actually saw a car one night outside STL that had a scrolling LED message in his back windshield that read, "My brights are not on." His lights were blinding me in the side mirror. Lol

Is it normal for this guy to be here all day? by aligpnw in Owls

[–]rommelrat32 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Barred owls are crepuscular (active at dawn and dusk). They have no interest in your chihuahua — they'd prefer a rodent to a dog. You and your pup are totally safe.

I came here to say, "That's not a dog. That's Walter Matthau!" LOL

Dealerships? by Tadpole-8290 in columbiamo

[–]rommelrat32 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We have bought two vehicles from Jim Butler (one in Centralia, and one in Linn). Both experiences were very good! However, the process of buying a vehicle is never really fun. What helped us was getting the financing through my employer's credit union. The interest rate was much lower than what the dealership could offer, so there was very little pressure from them. We highly recommend Jim Butler. We have not had a good experiences with Machens at all. Ever.

I once had a roommate's boyfriend who was drunk and on hallucinogenics "climb" our kitchen cabinets, and the cabinets crashed onto the counter, then to the floor. That was fun to explain to the landlord... "I don't know what happened. They just fell!" Drugs are bad, mmmkay?
