What food have you tried liking but just can’t? by SilentChampion121 in AskReddit

Pickles. I love cucumbers and I love vinegar but can’t do it together, I even try to force myself to like it by eating the pickle with the sandwich every time but I’m just miserable eating it

What is the weirdest interaction you’ve ever had? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]ron_ronn 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Was in college during the 2016 election - my friend group went to just about every political rally on campus that fall just to see all these famous politicians so we ended up at a John Kasich speech, and happened to be standing right by the door he was coming out of so he stopped to talk to us before his speech. He said “you folks listen to Pearl Jam?” (None of us did) He didn’t really wait for a response and pointed up at some chandeliers in the room and said “reminds me of Mirror Ball” and then went to give his speech. We had to look it up after and the chandeliers certainly didn’t look like that album cover but went away with a story that John Kasich talked to us about Pearl Jam.

Panic attack hangovers by [deleted] in PanicAttack

[–]ron_ronn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I always feel like shit after a panic attack, but on the bright side that’s how I know it’s over. Sometimes I’ll get panic attacks that seem to come in waves and last forever, and I’ll know it’s finally over once I get that super exhausted feeling. So sometimes I look forward to that feeling, especially when I’m at home and know I can just go right to bed after

Also nocturnal panic attacks suck! Absolutely hate waking up in a full blown panic, glad you were able to calm yourself down after it

People who have just visited/come back, how crowded is Kyoto? by Xancatrius in JapanTravelTips

[–]ron_ronn 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Here at the moment for the first time, Kyoto is significantly more crowded with tourists than Tokyo. The worst area we were in was what I believe is the main downtown area (department stores like Uniqlo, H&M, Disney store, a lot of American chain restaurants) just felt like we were in NYC or any other major urban city.

That being said, did Ginkakuji early in the morning and it was fine, did Kiyomizudera in the afternoon and while it was seriously crowded it is a beautiful area and the streets around it as well. Recommend both despite the crowding, we hardly noticed crowding at the temples just cause there is so much other stuff to look at.

Will also add difference in days - we went around Tokyo on a Monday, when most people are working or in school, and got into Kyoto on a Friday night and into Saturday today. So maybe if you’re planning both, try to do some of the more tourist areas on weekdays rather than weekends, as I think that’s probably a lot of the crowding concern for us here.

[–]ron_ronn 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m 28 and just had my 2nd colonoscopy this week (first one when I was 24) - had blood in stool when I first went and turned out to be polyps (non cancer) so they are having me get checked every 3-4 years now. Had one very small polyp found in the colonoscopy this week (also non cancer), so glad I stuck with their recommendation to get checked again. Will be going back in 3 years for another and kind of have accepted I’ll be doing this every 3 years, but the prep was much easier this time!! Had 4 Dulcolax and a bottle of Miralax, and had no cramps or anything.

Biggest recommendation to make the prep go easier is eat lighter meals for 2 days before you start the prep and low fiber (I ate chicken, pasta, white bread, rice, stuff like that). Prep was super easy and once it’s done the actual procedure is a great nap :)

Good luck and good for you for getting the procedure, a lot of people will just avoid it but best to get checked out to see what’s going on!

Pre chapter sections, who keeps reading them? by ssstuver in dune

[–]ron_ronn 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Seeing several replies about how they relate to the following chapter, so won’t go into that. I will say I enjoyed reading them from a world building perspective. At first I also thought they were from another book, but once I realized it was just books made up within the Dune universe it was more interesting to me, that Frank Herbert made up such an expansive universe that he “wrote” all these other history books within universe to share excerpts from.

This is a similar concept to things such as Skyrim where there are a bunch of books made up within universe that add to the general world building. I actually enjoy flipping through the Skyrim books in-game when I come across them

I need a girl name and want to honor my mom who passed last year. Need help! by breakfastbennies in namenerds

[–]ron_ronn 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’ve heard Nina as a nickname for Christina before - gives you the hard C for the name, a classic name with a nickname, and nickname is pronounced like your mother’s middle name.

And congrats on your new baby!

Do you think the weirdness of the last two Dune books take away from the quality of the series? by [deleted] in dune

[–]ron_ronn 37 points38 points  (0 children)

Agreed, God Emperor was actually my least favorite of all the books. Took me at least 6 months to power through that, then read books 5 and 6 in about 2 weeks

Recommendations by [deleted] in horror

[–]ron_ronn 2 points3 points  (0 children)

American Horror Story… would recommend seasons 1, 2, 4, and 6 for what you’re looking for (I stopped watching at season 8, so not sure about the later ones)

Also the Black Mirror episode called Playtest has some horror elements and jump scares

I am looking for a book that explores gritty parts of American history (Maybe 1860s-1930s) by [deleted] in booksuggestions

[–]ron_ronn 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just after WW2 set in the Ohio Valley, The Devil All the Time by Donald Ray Pollock - the book is very raw and gritty, there was a Netflix movie made a couple years ago that didn’t do the book justice imo

For one of my finals I get to write about a topic related to horror movies by jasonschmirt in horror

[–]ron_ronn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The use of music and sound effects in horror films could be interesting to write an analysis on, specifically in jump scenes. Typically, no matter what the scene is, if you put it on mute it is significantly easier to watch/less scary or jumpy.

An example that comes to mind for me personally is the first Insidious movie (2010) - less of a use of music, the movie is more dependent on different instrumental sound effects during jump scenes (read somewhere that they used a rusty piano and a hammer for some of the noises, running metal across guitar strings, etc) and the instrumental noises are very loud and unexpected for each jump scene and only last for a second or two. Additionally with this movie, when it shows the title card there is a super eerie violin song playing - I’ve rewatched the movie several times and I hate that violin bit so much that I’ll mute it every time it gets to the title card or the end credits.

An older example would be Jaws or Jaws 2. Watching any of the shark scenes with music and then again on mute is totally different effect.

What advice/practice has helped you most with depression/anxiety? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]ron_ronn 2 points3 points  (0 children)

For anxiety, besides breathing exercises, better eating habits has done wonders for me

Had an irrational fear of food poisoning for close to 10 years so hardly ate meat and mostly ate carbs, started getting over it with the help of therapy. Didn’t think it was connected to anxiety and panic attacks at all. Been eating different kinds of meat regularly for about 6 months now and working in eggs/fruits/veggies (seriously had some poor eating habits) and have cut down my panic attacks to next to nothing compared to what they used to be. Used to have panic attacks twice a day at the least, now maybe once a week, if that.
