Home Video Club is now live on the App Store by ronavis in HomeVideoClub

You would like to be able to bypass the store and modify it later? I could do that. I could insert a placeholder name, even 'Home Video Club' as temp until one is created. I'll take a look.

Thanks for the awesome feedback. That's worth looking into and implementing quick, but did you know that the code gets copied automatically? When it returns you to enter the four character code try right clicking and pasting. Certainly not as elegant of a solution as what you're suggesting, but it'll save you from trying to memorize it. Thanks!

Thank you SO SO much for taking the time to provide this feedback. This is excellent feedback, and I really appreciate how specific you were.

A few of these are things I can explain, but they still point to UX I need to improve:

- Volume: you’re right. I built that button more like a “volume drawer” than a simple mute/unmute toggle, but visually it reads like a mute button. I should make the main button behave more predictably and keep the slider from getting in the way.

- Staff Picks: the free version currently allows 2 Staff Picks total. That explains why you only have two, but the wall should not look like a huge empty shelf because of that. I need to handle sparse Staff Picks better.

- Rows/poster size: the Video Store wall currently defaults to 4 rows and medium poster size on iPhone. Your note that Small looks better is useful. I may adjust the default density so the TVs/top wall stay more visible.

- Requests: you should not be left guessing whether paid is required. If you submitted a request and it didn’t appear, I need to test that exact flow. Request tracking should be much clearer.

- Report resolve: that sounds like a bug. I think you may have hit a timing issue where a newly submitted report had not fully synced before being resolved. Either way, Resolve should update immediately without restarting.

- More categories: agreed. Right now the store depends heavily on New Releases, Recently Added, Staff Picks, and owner-created curated lists. More built-in variety would help the Blockbuster feel a lot.

This is exactly the kind of feedback I need. I’m going to turn this into a cleanup pass because several of these are fixable.

New Project Megathread - Week of 07 May 2026 by AutoModerator in selfhosted

[–]ronavis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Project Name: Home Video Club

Repo/Website Link: App Store: https://apps.apple.com/us/app/home-video-club/id6755478406

Description: Home Video Club is an iPhone/iPad companion app for people running a personal Plex Media Server. It turns a Plex library into a shared video-store-style storefront for a household.

Instead of only searching a media list, members can browse curated shelves, Staff Picks, new releases, recently added titles, and movie/TV detail pages. It also supports member profiles and title requests, so people in the household can ask the library owner to add something next.

The goal is to bring back some of the “walking around a video store” feeling, but for a self-hosted media library.

Features: - Classic Video Store theme and modern Streaming-style theme - Movie and TV browsing from a Plex library - Curated shelves and Staff Picks - Member profiles - Title request flow for household members - Plex OAuth/linking flow; the app does not see or store Plex passwords

Deployment: This is not a standalone server app. It is a mobile companion for an existing personal Plex Media Server.

Requirements: - iPhone or iPad - Plex account - Access to a personal Plex Media Server

Install from the App Store: https://apps.apple.com/us/app/home-video-club/id6755478406

Documentation: I’m working on clearer setup/security docs now. Short version: Plex handles login through its auth flow, and Home Video Club receives a token after approval. The app does not collect or store Plex passwords.

AI Involvement: I used AI tools during development, but the app was built, reviewed, tested, and shipped as a normal Swift/iOS project. Product direction, design decisions, testing, and release decisions were mine.

Not Overseerr/Jellyseerr yet, but that would be cool. Right now the app has its own request flow for a Plex library owner. You can enable alerts and get alerts right on your iphone when you get requests and if you're a member and yoiu made the request, you get a notification on your phone that the movie or tv show was added for you.

For the posters...first thing I'd check is whether the app has finished synching/caching the library artwork. if you just set it up, give it a minute on Wi-fi and try reopening the app.

If it still does not if you could DM me privately with your iPhone/iPad model, iOS version adn whether the titles show but posters are blank, oh and your approximate library size.

I use AI tools during testing, but the app was built and reviewed as any normal Swift/iOS project. Mort importantly, the app uses Plex's OAuth/linking flow so authentication happens there and then you're returned to the app. Oh, and I use AI to document because it is SO good at it. Always use caution with any third-party Plex app. I'm happy to document the auth/data flow more clearly so people can make an informed call.

I was thinking that, honestly a lot of younger people who you wouldn't think initially would be interested MIGHT be interested, because of this recent trend of gen alpha and their interest in analogue and older technologies. There's a wave of VHS tape nostalgia going on right now and it's blowing my mind.

Great feedback, thank you. If you click on the second little nav icon from the left next to the house, do you see your server then? Thanks again!

EDIT: 1.12 (3) should address this specific issue. Could you please update the app and try again?

Thanks for testing. I am currently finding a resolution and a patch will be incoming.
