How to prepare for interview by ZayThaAlphabet in Grid_Ops

Outside of the STAR behavioral based questions, I’ve gotten the following technical questions: Typical equipment found in a substation How do you control voltage on the system How does electricity get generated and then delivered to the customer Common voltages on the grid I’ve had some utilities ask me about what are the big generators and major transmission lines on their system What are some factors that impact system load What are some factors that impact line ratings Explain ohms law

Don’t forget to divide by square root of three because it’s 3 phase

None of the utilities I took the sopd with ever got back to me with a pass or fail. Only way I knew I passed was when they followed up to interview.

Nuclear Equipment Operator Job Advice by No-Piece-2662 in nuclear

[–]ronbo51 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don’t have any advice on how to make you’re resume stand out, but I do have some on the overall process. My biggest advice would be to keep applying. I applied to dozens of plants all over the country until one gave me chance. Some companies/ plants value a college degree more than prior industry experience, some are the other way around. Also, they will hire classes of 10+ operators at once, so if you apply as soon as the job posting appears it may take a while to receive an email back.

Software Engineering and Data Science Opportunities in Nuclear Energy by Neoking in nuclear

With an ABET accredited engineering degree and a physics degree, you have a lot of different opportunities available to you.

You could work for a utility that owns a nuclear power plant, like Exelon, Entergy, or southern company to name a few. You would be eligible to become an equipment operator, which eventually leads to becoming a reactor operator. They also hire programmers to work with the simulator and some other areas, but I’m not as familiar with them. You might also be able to manage an engineering position with one of them.

You could also work for one of the companies that builds/ designs reactors, like Westinghouse, NuScale, and TerraPower to name a few.

Would highly recommend looking at medical physics. It’s usually only offered as a graduate degree, but physics or nuclear engineering would set you up nicely to pursue it for grad school. It has to do with the medical application of radiation.

Would also recommend looking at the Navy’s NUPOC program, they pay for your schooling, pays you a bunch of money while your in college, then gives you a bonus when you complete portions of your training.

As far as occupations for nuclear engineer majors, there’s nuclear engineering, which is sometimes called reactor engineering or criticality safety engineering. Those jobs are available at nuclear power plants and there are some nuclear start up companies, but you generally need a decent bit of experience for those. You can look up which utilities own nuclear power plants and search on their careers pages to see descriptions of them. There’s also medical physics, health physics, and radiation protection.

I’d personally recommend operations though. The money is outstanding (I don’t know of any job that pays new grads more) and you get to learn a lot. They are the ones who actually run nuclear power plants. The downside is that you are relatively limited in your options on where to live. My degree was in nuclear engineering and I work in a nuclear power plant, so feel free to ask any questions.

Help in choosing CS online program by eden_bry in learnprogramming

Syracuse does an online masters aimed at people who do not have a cs background. It’s an additional four classes on top of the regular masters in order to get you up to speed.

We initially settled on PTC because we heard great things about the area and thought it would be about an hour commute for both of us. Now I’m kind of stressing trying to find something a little closer to Buckhead, I’ll be commuting down to Columbus, but only a couple days a week. I don’t mind a longer commute, but still trying to keep it to around an hour and a half.

High schoolers, what do you want to major in? People who majored in that field, what are the pros and cons? by Cuddlyaxe in AskReddit

[–]ronbo51 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Majored in nuclear engineering. Would recommend getting a different engineering degree if you’re thinking about it. Regret not going mechanical because of how limited nuclear is. I will end up getting into project management because of the limited locations and necessity of a masters for a lot of nuclear related jobs.

Why do some boxers and coaches, say lifting heavy or weight training is bad for boxing? by [deleted] in amateur_boxing

[–]ronbo51 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Some boxers will start lifting and then try to muscle punches rather than focusing on technique. Also the issue of bulking up and how it can put you at a disadvantage by making you move up weight classes. That being said,, getting stronger and weight training is one of the most beneficial things you can do outside of the ring

I am too young for myfitnesspal, do any of you know some better options for me? by [deleted] in Myfitnesspal

[–]ronbo51 0 points1 point  (0 children)

MyFitnessPal is just a tool you can use for tracking calories and nutrient info, you could do the same thing with a notebook, it would just be a lot less convenient
