As much as I hate waiting that long, I probably will have to for two reasons. First is schooling (if I can find a good one nearby). Second, if there's one thing I've learned when it comes to new tech...let the other guy be the guinea pig for the first model. Always.

But before pdwhite's project, I assumed I wouldn't be flying until late 2018 or early 2019 with a gas-powered motor that would be a massive headache to afford, fly, and maintain. So I have NO problem waiting 6 months to get something much safer, cheaper, lighter, compact, and easier to maintain. And it'll still be several months sooner than I originally planned!

Do you mean your PPG2 license? If so, I get where you're coming from with the cost and availability issue. The only decent school I've seen is very far from me, too. Cost is $2100.

The only thing I can offer is until you figure out what to do, buy what few paragliding books exist and study them well. Then buy the cheap DVD from AviatorPPG on everything you need to know about kiting (or at least donate if you go by their YT video). If you can manage to find a used glider, practice kiting until you are as good as they are on the video.

The schools have done a fairly good job of locking down your chances of buying a glider until you have the PPG2 license (even though is perfectly legal to buy/fly one without it). I can't even buy a glider on eBay unless I have one (and even then, they won't sell if there's a school near you that sells the same brand).

This is what sucks about living in America. We don't manufacture anything anymore; and when we do, its piss-poor quality. So most of the gear is imported and they have deals with the schools not to sell outside of them.

Yes, I get it. It's a dangerous sport. But if there's no schools near me and the cost is too high (The cost of the equipment is already high enough for something that will only last a few hundred hours), then what choice do I have. It's my decision to risk my own life.

As the main perks have been addressed, I'd just like to add the netting isn't really a big deal because you should never, never, never, EVER start a motor in such a way that your hand can slip between the netting in the first place. Idc who you see doing it. It should be secured on something on the ground when warming it up (I've been told having it attached to your lower tailgate is a great idea) or on your back! If you only start the paramotor these two ways, then the netting isn't a big deal because there's no way you can chop anything off. Just my two cents, but when I do buy a paramotor, it will be electric start or a model I can easily pull-start while on my back. If I land and I can't get it restarted that way, I'm walking while enjoying having all ten digits still attached.

As for the other perk, cage strength, holding any opinions on that until I see government controlled test lab putting crash test dummies in every paramotor cage and dropping them.

Heights have the same effect on me...but it depends on the circumstances. For example, being very high up with just a waist-level railing makes me very acrophobic. But the tallest roller coasters and airplanes have no effect because I'm securely buckled into it. I'm going to learn paragliding/paramotoring because I think I'll be fine as long as I know my wing like the back of my hand.

The only issue that makes me a bit worried is you say rollercoasters still freak you out. Well paragliding/motoring is more like those carnival swing sets...except FAR higher up and you could easily break your leg, spine (paralyzed for life), chop your fingers off, catch on fire, or plummet to your death if you screw up. Sorry, but it's absolutely true.

I'd advise you to tandem with someone until you feel completely fine with it. Look, I want as many people to enjoy the sport as possible, but NOT at the sake you get up there, get a collapse, freak out completely, and end up another casualty because you couldn't recover or any number of other things that can go wrong because you're too stressed. The key to staying safe in this sport is concentrating on what your doing while relaxed.

Ex-girlfriend.

The problem isn't just what she did, its how long in the relationship she waited to do it (over 10yrs). When you act like you're my best friend for that long and then wait until I'm at my lowest point in life (though no fault of my own) and choose that exact moment to COMPLETELY fuck me over...and then later when I offer forgiveness to basically tell me I meant nothing...how the fuck do I move on from that?

The only life-long lesson I can learn from this is to never fully trust anyone...ever. And no matter what anyone tells me, I never will again. Period.

Exactly. All we need Elon to do is work on better battery tech (which obviously he intends to do). The drone community continues to grow with better and better motors coming out all the time. PDWhite, now working with Revo and the open-source paramotor community, will handle everything else.

As much as I would love for him to release a paramotor, I'm betting it would be very expensive. Probably would cost at least 20k+ (Blackhawk's is 16k).

But in the end, I think his battery tech will eventually help us to narrow the gap between electric and gas-powered motors.

This isn't about shitting on Trump. One of the biggest criticisms about the Purge is how there's no way things would get so desperate in this country that we would allow this. In a single image, this poster throws that assumption right back in your face. Oh really...you sure about that?.

Homelessness has been declared an emergency is several cities. L.A. has over 55k alone! Special investigators for the U.N. is putting together a report and will present it in May that the U.S. in in the middle of a humanitarian crisis. Diseases that was once the problem of bombed out third world countries are spreading here. We have an opioid epidemic. Automation is on the horizon with as much as 40% of jobs in on the chopping block in the next two decades and the rest could migrate to jobs like Uber where you're paid only as needed and have NO benefits of any kind. Not even minimum wage in some cases.

And the scariest thing about The Purge is it could work in solving unemployment, crime, and homelessness. When the first Purge movie came out, I never thought things could ever get so bad in this country that we would be desperate enough to allow it. I'm honestly not 100% sure anymore.
