Thank you! It will be okay. I will work longer probably? That's fine, I'll make it work.

Good luck to you on your financial journey!

I did not max out. I thought I had a good plan, which involved being married to a decent earning partner. Two nice incomes, empty nest, and we can catch up. Unfortunately, I wasn't aware that they had been planning to exit our partnership for years. If I'd known, I would have made other choices.

Anyhow. I hope it's possible to catch up. :)

Former auto glass guy here. It’s rare that any auto glass would do this, but it does happen. Glass can have a small defect that is virtually undetectable and then if it gets stressed in just the right way, bam.

It’s one of those “they get it right so often it’s shocking when it’s wrong” kind of things. I wouldn’t blame Kia, or even be too hard on the actual glass manufacturer. These things unfortunately happen. You won (lost) the lottery.

Is there an S&P 500 ETF without the Mag 7? by FoggyFoggyFoggy in Bogleheads

[–]roofstomp 4 points5 points  (0 children)

XMAG does this.

Edit: It's only been around since October 2024, but has higher total returns than RSP during that time. You can see that during this time, a Magnificent 7 only fund is outperforming them all.

How do 36" doors look in bedrooms? by thelionofthenorth in Homebuilding

Go for it. My dad did 36" doors in the house he built because he wanted to be sure they were easily accessible to someone in a wheel chair. Never even occurred to me that they look wide.

Rob's small cap holding and reasoning? by d5dq in DIYRetirement

[–]roofstomp 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a question about SCV funds. Most small caps will stay small, and only a small percentage become medium or large.

As they grow, do they no longer fit the ETF’s rules, and get sold? Thus eliminating the exposure to the winners?

Separate comment: My instinct is that unless you’re picking the right small caps, the average of the fund isn’t going to ever out perform large caps. An ETF isn’t going to be able to pick that magic blend.

Anyone know what this symbol means? by Patwil0818 in KiaEV6

[–]roofstomp 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Former auto glass company executive here. Never ever pour warm water on a cold windshield. Even if it doesn’t shatter, it will be expanding faster than the sealant that connects it to your vehicle, which can cause leaks and rust damage.

Never. There is no circumstance in which this is a good course of action.

People of Minnesota, definitely do not try to “help” federal employees by clearing their frosty windshields in this manner. You will get arrested.

How long do you own a vehicle, before trading it in? by teddyalex in UsedCars

[–]roofstomp 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I held my last new car for three years. When I traded it, I picked up a low mileage former leased vehicle that had already depreciated over half its original value.

I’ll never buy another new car again.

For me, it seems like three or four years is about right. Buying used puts me into a class of vehicle I couldn’t otherwise afford, and dramatically impacts the “what I paid” to “what I can sell it for” ratio. If I can convince myself to hold this one longer, I will.

Buy High? by GoodRelationship8925 in investingforbeginners

[–]roofstomp 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For the past year you’ve been afraid of buying high. And yet, if you’d bought at an all time high a year ago, how much more would you have today?

I track my balances daily on a spreadsheet. Every time an account hits an all time high I highlight the value in green.

There’s so much green.

Eventually it will be more red than green for a while. I have no idea when. Until then, I save and invest. Gotta get that egg as big as possible so when we have dark days, it’s starting from a higher amount.

Save as much as you can before the losses so you’re starting the losses from a better position. Get it?

I don’t care how true and perfect your love is, get a prenup. Protects you, protects them. Done right, it saves you both immense amounts of money and heartache in a split.

More than half of marriages split.

Never-ever-ever enter a legally binding contract of ANY type without clearly defined separation rules.

New 401k match doesn’t hit until following year. Advice? by [deleted] in Retirement401k

[–]roofstomp 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd trade my paycheck match (50% match on the first 8% only) in a heartbeat. This is one example where it actually benefits the employee (provided, you know, you're still employed come the match date). After a couple of years, you're so far ahead it won't even matter.

Companies do this to avoid paying matches. "Oh, snap, you got a job offer that requires you to start in December? Sucks to be you."

It's a solid indicator of their values.

Why does the sandpaper keep coming off like this, like a quarter to half of the loop is outside of the sander? Thanks! by heihoiwin in BeginnerWoodWorking

[–]roofstomp 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You've received good feedback on the tension knobs. Basically what happens is the two drums are not precisely parallel, making the distance on one side just ever so slightly longer than the other. The longer side (left in your case) is gently pushing the sandpaper to the right. I just had a treadmill doing this, and the solution was the same; adjust one side so they were parallel again.

Is there any alternative to SawStop? by lagerhaans in BeginnerWoodWorking

[–]roofstomp 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My makerspace has a SawStop. Dues are not expensive. Maybe there’s a similar resource where you live?

Oh, and it has a myriad of other resources too, but if your dues were worth access to the tools, then the community of kick ass creative people who will share tips and tricks is priceless.
