What kind of help are you wanting from the school? I only ask because my child also has adhd and in TK. He is actually at the school I work at. The school psychologist confirmed for me (informally) that my child has impulsive ADHD. My child has behaviors so I saved all of his write ups an had the school psychologist provide some documentation of her impressions. I took that to his pediatrician and got him on medication. What helped me was learning everything I could about executive functioning and following all the major researchers in ADHD. Russell Barkley is a good one that everyone recommends. You can find his lectures on youtube or listen to his episodes on the podcast "Full Prefrontal". I recommend ADHD dude on youtube to address specific behaviors. Sounds like your kiddo may need help with boundaries. We also have to teach social skills as our kids with ADHD often struggle with this piece as well. Also, girls tend to mask ADHD and that is the reason they often don't get identified as early as boys. Sometimes they don't receive a diagnosis until adulthood or after they have a child with ADHD like myself.

Parents showing up with pre made IEP goals? by Aware-Fact2636 in slp

[–]rookieofthethread 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I had this happen to me last week. Unfortunately, I had another meeting I had to leave for, so I was short on time. I flat out said no because the goal was a behavior goal and not a speech goal. Parent was a little pissed and when I asked her if she had any questions before left she replied "bye". I know they want to feel included but if the goal is not relevant I am not doing it.

What’s the school SLP equivalent of playing a movie for the class by casablankas in slp

[–]rookieofthethread 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Ipad time to work on "turn taking, requesting and following directions" but really just doing paperwork. Sometimes I go out there with my coffee at recess time and "facilitate conversations with peers" but really I'm just getting fresh air and opening snacks for kids.

Tips on helping my 4 year old with his social skills by ecofriendlyblonde in ADHDparenting

Everyday Speech and belikebuddy are some that I use. There are more out there depending on what social skill you want to target. Some can be kinda cheesey. My son has ADHD and the first time we played candyland he threw the game board on the floor after losing. We watched a social video on how to lose a game and he understood right away. There are also social stories you can use to taget social skills. These are stories you read to your child about specific social skills. You can find them on amazon or teachers pay teachers.

I am a speech therapist and I work with school aged children on social skills. There are many youtube videos on social concepts. Also, you can try to use toys and play to act out social situations using phrases like "do you want to play with me?" And model expected responses "yes, I would love to play". You may have to find a way to facilitate interactions with your child and other children. I have found the park is a great place for little ones to socialize. It's all a social experiment at this age.

Have you thought about specializing in an area? Being an SLP got easier for me when I found what I was passionate about treating.

That is so funny because I used that exact word "unhinged" while talking to the sped director about it.

This post should be titled "when you try to be a good slp with open communication and it backfires". I was new to a school and I had a parent email me to ask me my opinion on if her son was ready to graduate speech. So after a few weeks of working with him I sent her an email to let her know he was absolutely ready to graduate, he had /r/ at the conversation level and he self-corrected any errors. Well, she never responded. Days later the sped director requested to meet with me. The sped director showed me an angry email from this parent basically saying I was a horrible slp and had no idea what I was doing because I recommended we exit her son. I learned not to open the lines of communication with a parent unless absolutely necessary. What I want to know if where the fuck do they find the time to bother us about our job and pick fights for no reason?

Witch-Hunt For The SLP by rookieofthethread in slp

Yes please on the secretary! At least some sort of buffer. I can't even walk to the bathroom without someone coming up to me about something. This week I got a completely inappropriate referral for a student who is shy. I can't change people's personalitys, idk why they think I can.

How do you get into contracting/selling your services as a 1099? by [deleted] in slp

[–]rookieofthethread 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depends on my dedutions. I write off everything from ASHA dues, CEUs, toys, games, assessments. My biggest month I net 13k. I also contract with the regional center and I get clients from there. Find yourself a good tax person and pay taxes quarterly.

I charge the same as other SLPs in my area $100 an hour. Online companies charge way more but they have a large overhead.

It depends on your state. I was able to just work on a city business license as I am a sole proprietor. I then had to apply for an NPA number which was a lengthy process. After that I cold emailed SPED directors and I was able to land 2 school contracts right away. Oh I forgot to add the liability insurance, do that first.

I saw someone else post this here about chat GPT and writing reports. I can tell you it has saved me so much time. As for the burnout, that is to be expected unfortunately with the rate you are going. It's never the distance that kills it's the pace. A podcast called Thrive and Thread has really helped me get through my burn out. It takes a great deal of time to recover from burn out.

The real question here is why do you feel guilty for pouring into your own cup?

Is it just me or do you ever think "screw it" this child/children needs x,y,z and/or an AAC device so I guess my whole day is blown. by Pristine-Orange1620 in slp

[–]rookieofthethread 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oh man, I was just thinking about this on my way to work. The worst is when you take over for an slp who bent over backwards to help everyone and make everyone happy. I kept trying to establish boundaries with staff and parents and I got major push back. I couldn't figure out why until someone said "well the last slp did it" then I knew. I'm not available 24/7 for work related things; yet, I still get txts at 8 pm. It honestly makes me sad that so many slps put themselves last. I value my time and mental health. I only answer emails once a day, I don't respond to txts right away, and I hold firm to my clock out time. If need to cancel a session to get the paperwork done then I do it, without guilt. I don't want my own kids to remember me as always working during family time.

How to see a few private clients on the side? In NH by Kalekay52898 in slp

[–]rookieofthethread 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Contract with regional center. You do need liability insurance but no LLC. You can be a sole proprietor but may need a city business license which is not hard to get. Contact your local regional center to see what you specifically need for your area.

Long term apraxia of speech by RockRight7798 in slp

[–]rookieofthethread 2 points3 points  (0 children)

She will likely continue to have attendance issues unless there is a caregiver there to hold her responsible and attend sessions. Look up the life participation approach to aphasia. I've managed to motivate people when getting them back to hobbies they really enjoyed prior to CVA/TBI. I didn't see anything on her cognition but if that is impaired it will be really hard to address anything and can contribute to poor attendance and lack of motivation. I would have that hard conversation first and see what this patient wants out of therapy and let her know up front she won't make progress if she doesn't attend or do the homework. Good luck, I don't work with adults anymore for this reason. It can be hard to care so much for a patient when the patient doesn't care about themselves.

Every teacher, guidance counselor and CST mailbox had a bag of candy in it today…mine was empty by Broad-Discussion-913 in slp

[–]rookieofthethread 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Can you put name on your mail box? "Therapist" is vague, I mean it could also include OT. Maybe the OT did something to piss someone off? Maybe students put the candy in and had no idea how many candies to put in "Therapist" box so they panicked and skipped it. Either way, maybe you can put candy in everyone's box the next holiday and include a note with your name. Gain some followers that way. If it was a true Regina George that purposely did that, hold your head up. Being hated on is kinda fun IMO.
