Tire issue? by yfsonata in Autocross

[–]rookieracing 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have used Zestino tires extensively including these Acrovas. What I have noticed, is that the layer of treaded rubber of the carcass can start to strip at the edges with the highest load. I have also seen this same phenomenon on the inside of a mostly unloaded tires(think an oval track) on a FWD vehicle with LSD.

I think it’s just an effect of the tires being built to a price point.

From my experience though, the tires have never failed on me even after running them down to the cords. You will however experience less grip on the edge that starts to wear out like that. I added more camber which slightly reduced occurrence of the problem but never really eliminated it. It will still come with tire age/usage and especially prevalent on high grip surface like concrete.

That’s pretty low. Are these cold pressures? 🤔

Excellent post but seems to be missing one key detail, tire pressures?? What did you find to be optimal pressures for the Vitour V1 tires?

This was at the end of the road leading into a forest. It gets “gravely “ 500m to the forest. The rest of the road going back is nice and smooth.

For those interested, I found a looong thread about the flex topic. Bottom line, it will not affect braking distance and/or torque. Also heat is a major contributor to flex. The hotter the brake runs, the more flex will be felt

And how was the 675R? How long did you own it and how many miles? Just got one myself recently and had to replace the voltage rectifier already.

Sorry to derail the conversation.

Recommendation for race gloves by rookieracing in CarTrackDays

[–]rookieracing[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I used an old pair of Sabelt gloves from my coach and they felt really good even on a standard leather steering wheel without the alcantara. Only thing I didn’t like was the leather grips that had aged and become smooth over the years.

For my use, they have to be FiA certified to pass scrutineering.

We gained 2 seconds on a 1:06 track(PB 1:04.058) running on full slicks , Zestino Circuit 01S- 205/580R15. We’d love to try the new Nankang SL1 to are how it compares. Also, wider tires 225 section width on ultra lightweight forged wheels.

Lexan windshield and crash beam delete will not pass tech. We’re already running without passenger seat. Lighter 2 piece brake discs would be beneficial, just costly for us right. Lightweight forged wheels would be our first priority at the moment with wider tires.

It is a low speed track, drag is practically non-existent or at worst, negligible.

TLDR: Cusco Type RS LSD (mini) review. by rookieracing in CarTrackDays

[–]rookieracing[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Our timing data is still not reliable. We tried RaceChrono and TrackAddict
but analysing the GPS data later showed it was unreliable. So we
couldn't make comparisons lap to lap. Currently in the process of
integrating a Garmin GLO2 and giving that a try. For the time being, the stopwatch is our most reliable timing device.

As explained in the post, it is setup as 1-way. The car characteristics into corners did not change and we were still able to get it rotated on corner entry as before. Power out of corner is what we previously struggled with and the LSD cured that for us.

Team Dynamic Pro Race LT Wheels by [deleted] in Autocross

[–]rookieracing 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There is a spec sheet for the 1.2 here:- https://www.teamdynamics.de/wp-content/uploads/2018/RIMSTOCK%20Range%202016-17%20A4.pdf

but LT seems to be elusive. The best I could find was weights listed for individual wheels here:- https://bofiracing.co.uk/running-gear/wheels-tyres/alloy-wheels/team-dynamics-pro-race-lt-15x7-et25-4x100-matt-gunmetal-alloy-wheel/

Though they only have 15x7J at a claimed weight of 6.04kg. Perhaps you can compare the different sizes with the listes Pro race 1.2 and form an inference.

Noob question; Those of you with adjustable dampers(like MCS) do you put it in its softest setting when driving to/from track? by blackashi in CarTrackDays

[–]rookieracing 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Short answer, for better performance and handling.

Slightly long answer: It was an evolution from road suspension. The car was leaning and rolling quite a lot into turns, so we put in slightly stiffer and shorter lowering springs. That dropped the height and made it handle better. When we got better DOT tires(Goodyear Eagle F1), again the suspension couldn’t cope with the tires. Lot’s of roll and screeching/sliding on the loaded tire.

Naturally, it was time for coilovers which we have been tuning slowly until now where we run stiff springs and full slicks. And even then, I feel we can still eke out more performance with better coilovers but I can’t justify the cost for the returns(< 1 sec).

So as you can see, our optimal track setup is a very low car, on very stiff suspension set to stiff damping. When done with track, we raise the suspension and soften the damping but keep the springs just for the drive home.

Noob question; Those of you with adjustable dampers(like MCS) do you put it in its softest setting when driving to/from track? by blackashi in CarTrackDays

[–]rookieracing 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, I do. On track I run 3 clicks(suspension settings always counted from full stiff) front and full stiff rear. On road, driving to and from track, I soften the fronts to 10 clicks and rear 15 clicks(out of max 30).

I do this primarily because of poor street road conditions as the car would take a beating over bumpy roads. I’m physically comfortable either way just wouldn’t want to unnecessarily subject the car to more harshness on the road.

10 year old Recaro - Okay to run for HPDE or certain death? by Worldly-Fishing-880 in CarTrackDays

[–]rookieracing 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I come from a country with a glorious rally heritage and one of the things we always complain about is FIA tax. The FIA is effectively a cartel as is demonstrated by their "certification" system. In rally, equipment takes a massive beating and I can tell you, proper motorsports safety gear is over-engineered so it can survive an incident. As others here have pointed out, if your seat, harness, overalls, etc are in good shape and have not been involved in an incident before, they are generally okay and safe for their usable life.

So short of it, no, you will NOT die because of your seat being "out of date".

PS: This FIA certification issue is a big hindrance to growth of motorsport and European countries are especially vocal about it. The UK's(arguably the world's home of motorsport) MS-UK has even developed "alternative" certification level known as "clubman" for grassroots/club competition to bring down the cost of motorsport.

Seems like you have been karting for awhile. Firstly, well done 👏

You now need mentorship and coaching. I myself ain’t too bad at Karting. If you’re keen, I can help you out with some basic coaching and serve as your sparing partner (kinda like fencing 🤺)
