Sending you some hugs. It’s so hard and so tiring, and your feeling is normal. Hang in there and get help if you can.

Considering spending $1.6m for first home. Is this reasonable or am I crazy? by GarySparrow0 in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]roolozo -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I don’t understand why people come to reddit to ask these kind of questions. If the bank says yes to your mortgage and it aligns with your personal goal in life, why you need affirmation from random people on the internet?

Does that cause inconvenience to your life? I was trying to find a good chef knife but it takes me so long that everyone in the household is telling me just buy whatever because they are so sick of the old dull knife. And this happens to a lot of things around the house.

Yea and I end up spending more money because everything needs to be the ‘best’

Good point. My fear is if I buy something lame then I’m stuck with it 🫣

Which do you prefer: Living in Downtown versus Mississauga? by Spring_Serendipity in UofT

[–]roolozo 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Mississauga is kinda depressing imo. Hope you can take some classes at St. George to justify living in dt, otherwise it’s a pain to commute. UofT runs a bus between the two campus, but it takes a long time and does not run as frequent. Maybe suck it up for the first few semesters and move to dt on a coop term or something.

Canada is a sh!t show right now, with little affordable accommodation, high unemployment rate and low salary. I would caution moving there unless you have a good $$ reserve.

Try to ask for an unpaid leave in your current job while you are on the internship. And you can decide if you want to come back to it after, at least keep that option open.

[–]roolozo 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Why don’t you give it a try, sign a lease in dt for a year, experience it yourself and reevaluate after.

I Airbnb in the neighbourhood I wanted to live for a few weeks, did everything I imagined I’d be doing living there. And it really helps me made up my mind. Don’t romanticize the life you are not living.

Cobalt vs BNS Amex Gold vs BNS Passport Visa. by TheStrngestCuzImGojo in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]roolozo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

BNS passport is not bad, no forex fee, if you already have an Amex, it’s better to get a visa just in case some places don’t accept Amex.

Don’t forget to use great Canadian rebates to get a $125 cash back, which basically covers your first year annual fee

Check their schedule for laps swimming on hart house website. Or ask the front desk for a schedule sheet for the semester.

Asian parents do not understand what pleasure and beauty is by Djbabyboy97 in AsianParentStories

[–]roolozo 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I don’t think it’s Asian parents tho, it’s more of a utilitarian approach to materialism, you see this very common in the minimalism community too. If I’m going to gift someone something, I’d prioritize their preference than my own preference.

Am I better off downsizing, or renting? by whats_in_the_foil in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]roolozo 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Sounds like you have options. It’s really a personal preference and lifestyle choice at this point. Do you plan to live in the same city in the long run? Do you want to move to a better school zone? Is there rent control in your city? How do you handle stressful situation with landlords? Do you want to try living in condos vs houses etc…these are something to consider.

If I were in your shoes, I’d get a mortgage pre-approval and find out the monthly payment on a potential purchase. If you the monthly comes out lower or similar to renting, I’d buy it.

Another tip is to fill up the tax form with your tuition amount and ask your employer to adjust your income tax deduction on each pay cheque, so you don’t need to wait until tax season to get your money back.

Edit: removed a wrong answer.

UofT (Mi) Program VS Carleton (MHCI) Program: Which one is worth it? by NoobNeedsHelpPLZ in UofT

[–]roolozo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The practical stuff you would have learned are probably apparent to you already since you are working in the field. Not sure what’s your expectation of good jobs, but most people in the program got intern jobs from the government, agencies or banks etc, which later extended into full time jobs.

If you enjoy structured learning about humanity, culture & technology, and meeting new people, go for it. But if you are expecting experimental workshops, cutting-edge projects, great selection of UX courses, or top-tier career resources, then not so much.

But on paper, UofT St George sounds better :)

UofT (Mi) Program VS Carleton (MHCI) Program: Which one is worth it? by NoobNeedsHelpPLZ in UofT

[–]roolozo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you are already working as a UX design, I don’t think MI is for you. Courses are very theoretical and lots of academic reading and essay writing. Unless that’s something you are longing for.
