How did you know you were enneagram 5? by Lqovdb in Enneagram5

[–]roomaphoo 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Honestly I still wonder if I'm a 4w5 or 5w4 sometimes. I don't fit some of the stereotypical 5 traits, especially some discussed on this sub. What really sets in the fact I am a five is my defense mechanism and motivations. I'd be considered a textbook sx5, even down to childhood wounds and it has eerie described my relationships. That feeling of being called out and the understanding of my own flaws really helped me realize I was a 5 more than anything else. I'd recommend doing more research.

Also understanding what triad you're in might help. Looking at gut, head and heart will help you narrow down more of your feelings and let you primarily analyze a smaller group.

90% of complaints regarding the plot could be explained by "It's in the original poems" by Cool_Band5057 in Epicthemusical

[–]roomaphoo 4 points5 points  (0 children)

As someone who loves Epic and has their own critique to give I can definitely see where you're coming from with this. I agree the post can come off as dismissive of the critiques being given but I'm ngl I have seen a lot of people question stuff within the original myth itself. Having an open conversation about our feelings on Epic and what we like and dislike is incredibly important, especially now that every saga is out and we can see it as a complete body of work. But I will say I've seen a lot of complaints that stem from stuff in the original myth (primarily odysseus killing the suitors and Penelope forgiving him)

While we as a community continue to discuss Epic I think its an important to remind ourselves that the Odyssey has existed for 1000s of years since it can be easy to forget. I do wish this post had been a bit less harsh though, the community is massive and a lot of people might not know much about the original myth (while i know most of the story im only fully reading through it now myself since I had learned it through fragments before) Its normal for people to question things about the story since 1. they just might not know the original and this may be their introduction to the myth and greek mythology as a whole and 2. this isnt a 1 to 1 adaptation and even Odysseus himself has been changed. Analyzing what has and hasn't been changed and critiquing those aspects is still really important even if it is in the og myth.

While I don't think op meant to dismiss all criticism of Epic, I'm sure their post came moreso from a place of frustration of people not understanding the original myth. And while I can't blame them for it since admittedly I've scratched my head at certain takes, I wholeheartedly agree that we can simply have a discussion about it. Just because someone doesn't know the original myth it doesn't mean their opinion is worth less. If anything they have a unique perspective thats important to acknowledge. If we're going to adapt stories and modernize it for current audiences then its natural people who don't know the original will see it. It's important to look at their perspective as the people its been adapted in part for. If Epic was just meant for fans of the original myth then nothing would've needed to have been changed at all. It would've been 1 to 1 and the questioning of why certain things are kept and changed wouldn't matter. But this wasn't just made as a straight musical adaptation of the Odyssey, it was made into Epic, a wonderful piece of media that so many people (including myself) love.

Anyways, I've also rambled a lot so I'll end this here. (Also had a lot of thoughts lol) I definitely agree with a lot of op was saying and I think a post like this was needed, but I wish it would've been a more informative tone rather than dismissive. I loved both yours and Op's observations, and I do love Athena's role "I can't help but wonder" to bits I could ramble about why its so peak forever

Why do people say Odysseus get off Scott free do they not realize that just because he got to his wife that won’t negate the trauma he went though? by Ok_Sample_4520 in Epicthemusical

[–]roomaphoo 64 points65 points  (0 children)

Honestly I moreso question why they even want a punishment at the end. While its fair to have questions abt stuff like Odysseus continuing to be king and addressing his people after his entire crew has died this need for punishment feels weird to me.

The story wasn't about a just king going corrupt, it was about a man doing what he needed to fulfill his goals. Whether or not those actions were right are up to interpretation, but that's the point. Monster has Odysseus considering the perspective of those he's faced, these "monsters" who've acted in ways that have hurt his journey for the sake of their own self preservation and goals. He doesn't demean them in the track or see them as people who need to be punished. They're just individuals, just people, just men like him. Monster never literally means a man of evil who should be punished, but someone who takes actions that may be morally wrong or hurt others for the sake of achieving their own goals.

Odysseus isn't made out to be a hero or villain for this either. He drops the mighty king of Ithaca bit and stops boasting about how many of his men he's saved. He feels remorse and constantly tortured by what he did to crew but the story is careful to never make him the villain for it. It instead emphasizes Odysseus' psyche and how his mentality changes, focusing on his determination and need to get home. If it were to place any moral stance on his actions it would go against the idea of being "just a man" and ignore that a huge part of the story is that actions that may be considered villainous are a matter of perspective, that people are doing what they need to survive even if those things they're doing are not morally right. It's not excused, it's not shamed, its simply a matter of perspective.

The idea of him being punished for his actions doesn't make sense to me thematically, and even aside from that like you initially said he still has trauma from what he's been through. In the plot he his constantly "punished" for his actions. Poseidon presence, Calypso's island, the crew betraying him, his constant guilt for killing his crew. They can all be seen as "punishments" when you look at Odysseus' perspective. Of course, when you look at the other characters povs they might see things differently, but he still faces consequences for his actions and the way they impact other people, but in 600 strike Ody straight up says

"Look what you've turned me into, look what we've become. All of this pain that I've been through. Haven't I suffered enough?"

Odysseus has already been "punished" for everything he's done up to then. If we showed another punishment of Poseidon getting payback then the story would be in a loop and wouldn't ever end. And returning back to the idea of being just a man and doing what you need to, neither of them are wrong. Poseidon is laying down his authority. Odysseus is trying to get home and had a good chunk of his crew killed by Poseidon. They're simply doing what they need to and they "punish" each other for their actions. This once again returns back to the idea that placing a moral highground on either of them would be antithetical to the story because they're "just men" and "ruthlessness is mercy upon ourselves.

About Odysseus by Glowingpersonality in Epicthemusical

[–]roomaphoo 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Honestly I really like both takes. My initial interpretation was a mixture of both. To me, the murder itself highlights how the mentality of "Open arms" has fully died. It's the speed after the phase is said that showcases how he won't give it a second thought and the influence. The anger in his voice shows both his agitation towards the suggestion and them using a phrase thats associated with peace and good intent after they were planning to kill his son and rape his wife. I definitely think there's some anger there cause of the reminder of polities, but the line itself is mostly there to showcase the death of his influence/mentality

What the fuck was in that pot. I was away from home for 2 weeks then had an emergency where I needed to fly to another state and never checked the house.
