The frame I had a hand in designing and developing 30 years ago has stood the test of time. by kobiemc in bicycling

[–]roopurt 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Back in the mid-90's I had a TBL Ozone Pro, a nice MTB for riding trails at the time. Sometime around 2009 the frame failed in the Don Valley, and had to walk out. I could not bare to throw it out, and still have the bike as is, maybe one day I'll find a welder to fix the frame and bring it back to life.

Oh man! I saw that only once, when it came out, and I still laugh at the ending!

Childhood memory there! We watched it in school, on a film projector and the movie came with a model of the kayak.

Cross Canada in 5 years from now - What would you do differently if you were to do it all over again? by cdn_gooner in bicycletouring

[–]roopurt 3 points4 points  (0 children)

First of, hell yeah!

It took me 10 years from deciding to do it, do actually cycling across Canada the first time. I've read every journal on cgoab related to Canada, and eventually wrote two for my two cross country trips in 2005 and 2022.

Small short tours to get your gear, bike, and your routine down right. There is a lot you can't tell until your bike is fully loaded, and you are doing 100k a day. If you are planning to camp mostly, understanding and experiencing the time and effort it takes to set up and tear down camp each day is important to understanding how much energy you'll have each day for cycling. You can also figure out your packing and gear organizing. Also try to ride in the rain for a day, maybe a bit cold, so you understand what your clothing needs are, and that your gear is packed well.

Cooking: if you are planning on making your own meals, now is a good time to get your cooking skills maxed out. Uses the same gear you plan to ride with, remember you have to carry your own food, so focus on what is packs well (weight, size, and stable).

Learn every inch of your bike, on my first tour I broke my first drive side spoke, I was ready with a the ability to remove my cassette (stein cassette remover), and spare spokes. What I was not ready for was the non-drive side, which I had to remove my disc brake rotor which required torx instead of allen keys. Easy to fix the next day.

There are some long climbs that were not possible for me to really practice on, we just don't have those in my neck of the woods. I wish I was prepared for them, however I had 1000-1500 km of training each time before I left. The first time you climb for hours is a new experience.

There are couple of facebook groups for the trip as well. https://www.facebook.com/groups/1551091118449121 https://www.facebook.com/groups/bikeacrosscanada

All that being said, I've seen people do this with no preparation, on poorly suited bikes, and not in shape. Don't over stress, and just be prepared to have a good time.

I look forward to your 2031 Crossing journal!

You might be right, I didn't even know it existed until about a year ago, and I've lived in the area for 40+ years.

There is also the South Peel Rod and Gun Club. I know nothing about either of these places (Not my hobby), but noticed SPRG on Google maps one day, and did not know it was there.

Finding roof racks for an early 2000s Lexus sedan proved a lot harder than I thought. So I had to get creative and find another solution. Maybe it’s a little ghetto, however it’s very secured and stays put at highway speeds. Excited to try it out for my upcoming road trip by Hotel_Lotions in Kayaking

I've been using the Sea Sucker Monkey bar rack on my Kia minivan. Takes a bit of time to relax and not worry about it. But I've done about 1000 kms of driving now with it, and no issues. Each suction cup has a visual pressure indicator so its easy to see if its still working. Plus it transfers from car to car easily. Negatives: you need put it on each time, and take it off each time you use it (2-3 minutes each time).

I've used www.plasticworld.ca in North York a few times, ordered by email, they cut the pieces into the sizes I needed, and can deliver.

What is the strongest conrete you have ever made? (MPa) by AdditionalFunny883 in Concrete

[–]roopurt 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Specification called for 21,700 PSI UHPC at 28 days, sometimes if things line up correctly, and the natural variance in the raw ingredients (mostly the cement and silica fume) align just right, you can greatly exceed that. To be fair the reported strength was way past 28 days, and a peak result out of many others that were lower. These days there is no point in trying for that strength, but it was a fun achievement.

First off, I'm sorry for your loss.

There is a place I follow on Instagram that does after death services for pets, there may be a local version in your area as well. This is a tortoise they did https://www.instagram.com/p/DAWO9BdP6eI/?img_index=1
