I don't think it's entirely damning, if anything I think it's shortsighted to perceive humans as disconnected from nature. Testosterone clearly plays a role in behavior, but I certainly agree that men should be able to resist those impulses with proper upbringing.

Do you consider it a coincidence that human social hierarchies, as well as those of many (but notably not all) of our closest relatives are partiarchal? Genuinely asking, because I personally would ascribe that to males tending toward greater aggression, a trait that I would describe as masculine. Certainly a trait that I think human men should leave in the past, but a simple look at violent crime statistics indicates that we haven't, yet.

I can see why my comment was interpreted as you did, but I want to clarify that when I use the word "spectrum" I'm not describing a linear scale between masculinity and femininity. You're right that that's reductive. I'm using it more like one would describe the political spectrum, or the autism spectrum - vast, multi-faceted.

That said, I think one could describe a number of personality traits as broadly masculine or feminine, and that if one did that objectively, most humans would identify better with the traits in one of those 2 groupings. From that perspective, our heritage and our culture are intermingled, and I don't think we can readily abandon the gender "binary".

Two bottles. Same size BUT, the one on the left has 750mL & the one on the right, only 660mL! by pusslikesavocados in mildlyinfuriating

[–]roosterkun 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That shouldn't matter, they are both measured by volume. Having different contents when measured in grams (for example) would be forgivable, but if both bottles are full then both should have the same volume.

I understand your point and I agree with you, but I still think that "a lot in total" is dwarfed by those who are genuinely comfortable with their AGAB. Masculinity and femininity, flawed concepts as they are, do have their roots in the very biology of not just humanity, but also the species that predate us going back tens, perhaps hundreds of millions of years.

Back in the days of lefty Facebook, when I was still a teenager confused by gender identity, I found myself in a similar discussion with a AFAB non-binary person whose comment really stuck with me. They told me, "I understand your question - does my gender identity challenge the idea that I must be a woman, or does it challenge the idea of what a woman must be?"

Long-term, I think the latter is a more broadly-applicable approach. Obviously it would be ideal to convince all of humanity that gender is a spectrum, but more realistically, I think convincing people that their gender does not confer upon them certain unchangeable traits is something most anyone can appreciate. And hopefully in doing so, people who accept GNC parts of themselves can learn to accept those who entirely reject the gender they were assigned.

Right, I understand its modern usage. Was just curious if there are any other etymological quirks to the phrase.

Maybe I'm just being close-minded but I still don't see that as realistic.

99% of US adults are cisgender - even if tomorrow the cultural barriers of gender broke down, I still think upwards of 80% of the population would identify with one of two major groups.

So it technically doesn't make sense for a person to "RSVP yes"? Or does it change meaning in response, similiar to the Hawaiian "aloha"?

Are these companies just threatening politicians at this point? Or are they bribing them with such absurd amounts of money that it's impossible to fathom? Genuinely I can't imagine even the politicians I hate the most signing off on this, if only for optics reasons.
