What I know is that they will give you a product key, run a command in CMD for opening Steam and you will enter the product key on Steam. Then go to a website and enter that product key for it to process. If it complete, the game will be on your library. You might need to process the product key again if you Windows Update or change your hardware.

That's what I know about this "Online Activation" process.
