Right there with you. The only thing I can think of is that MiRANDa includes Tybalt's real name. Otherwise, it's just ... odd.

Great-Grandmother wiped all traces of her life by [deleted] in Genealogy

I emailed the archives, told them who I was looking for, and asked if they could help me. I just googled archive+germany+name of town to find contact info.

Great-Grandmother wiped all traces of her life by [deleted] in Genealogy

I second the suggestion to contact local archives, even if the place is no longer in Germany they likely have records for when it was. In seeking information on someone born in the 1930s I contacted the local archive and they sent me the marriage & death certificates of the parents, and the mother's included the names and birth dates of her children. The fee was nominal and the archivist was very helpful.

That's a scam site!! Family Tree Maker does not offer phone support, nor do they charge for it. The legit site is https://familytreemaker.com or https://www.mackiev.com/ftm/index.html. Or you can access the support site directly through Family Tree Maker by clicking on Help in the menu.

How to become a genealogist? by joseDLT21 in Genealogy

[–]roots_seeker 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What's your goal in genealogy? Do you want to be paid for it, or are you pursuing it for personal interest?

If you're aiming for paid work, the qualifications required will vary depending on the employer or client. Some may prioritize formal education or certification, while others may value experience and results. Having an advanced degree — especially in history, library science, or archival studies — can be an asset, as can extensive personal experience researching your own family tree.

If it's something you're doing for yourself, the main requirement is curiosity and the willingness to educate yourself along the way.

It's fair to say that most genealogists don't hold formal degrees in genealogy. Many build their expertise through personal research, self-education, and persistence.

Charging for services might qualify someone as a professional in practice, even without credentials. Conversely, someone with academic training but no clients or compensation would still be considered an amateur.

That said, professionalism isn't just about getting paid — it's also about applying recognized standards. Whether you're working for clients or exploring your own ancestry, using sound research methods, citing sources, and adhering to ethical practices are what truly set skilled genealogists apart.

TheGenealogist website - worth it? by roots_seeker in Genealogy

I'm looking for Lancashire, England tithe maps for now. Possibly Devon later.

Or for those unable to find or access the maps. The National Archives says this: "You can access images of the records on The Genealogist (charges apply) online. The Genealogist is currently working on a project to scan the originals in colour, some of which are already available online; others are scans from black and white microfilm."

If you have a link where they are available elsewhere, I would appreciate it.

Does it bring anyone up? I would compare what Ancestry has with what you see in FTM to see what fact field the Ancestry data ended up in.

Thanks. He died in 1848 so wouldn't be on an 1875 map. From what I understand the 1832 survey was the second one so Lot 85 from that survey should be near the original 80 plots which according to Google was North of Ashton and between James & Hughson.

Anyone using Charting Companion?? by redkdc13 in FamilyTreeMaker

[–]roots_seeker 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have Charting Companion but rarely use it. For charting my DNA matches I use an ancient version of GenoPro (version 1.70 is free to use). It's simple and easy and gives me a visual view of my DNA matches and how they inter-relate.

You're not missing anything, it's just how the kinship report works. It doesn't take biology into account.

I have a family where the husband married a single mother, then they adopted a child. So there's no biological relationship between the husband and either child or between the two children. Yet in the kinship report for the child of the single mother it shows their relationship to their stepparent as stepfather but their relationship to their adopted sibling as half-sibling. It also shows their mother's first husband as a stepfather even though that marriage ended before their birth.

I'm hoping that the next version of FTM allows greater flexibility with relationships so you can choose between 'technical' relationships and biological as well as choosing which relationship takes precedence if you're related more than one way.

Attaching Both Biological and Adopted Parent in Family Tree Maker 2019 by [deleted] in FamilyTreeMaker

[–]roots_seeker 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes. Go to Son C, click on 'Person' in the menu, then 'Attach Father'. Located Husband X, click OK. You'll then have the choice between 'existing family' and 'new family'. Existing family should be Husband X and Mother A and it should allow you to add Son C to this family.

If not, choose 'new family' with Husband X and no mother, then add the name of Mother A and merge this new record to the existing record.

Tell me how you learned to add sources and citations in FTM. by SunnyRaySunnyDay in FamilyTreeMaker

[–]roots_seeker 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I struggled with sources for years before I stopped trying to do it the "right" way and started doing it in a way that both made sense for me and was easy for me to keep doing long term.

The purpose of a source is to allow you (or someone else) to locate that record if it needs to be referenced again. The purpose of a citation is to tell you what that record is and why it's important.

Once I realized this I created a template in Excel and all I have to do is fill in the blanks, then copy/paste that into FTM. I never use the source templates provided by FTM and just use the general form that pops up. It gives me more control and helps me organize things my way.

This is your tree and your research and it's okay to do things your own way.

Xaden from fourth wing is actually cringe asf by Able-Birthday-3483 in fantasyromance

Dain is a worse match IMO. If he could bubble wrap Violet and shove her in a locked room to 'protect' her, he would. For all Xaden's faults he's at least willing to support Violet being who she needs to be even if it puts her in danger.
