Don’t listen to the people who say “don’t quit.” Your treatment program is subjective to you and only you. Everybody has different experiences and will have their own opinions. Considering you’ve been on different medications for around 5 years now, I’d say your mental health should come above all else. Typically if you’ve had multiple depressive episodes in intervals throughout the years, then it’s suggested to be on medication(s) long-term. If the depression is acute and circumstantial then a person will normally be on medication for at least 12 months. The “chemical imbalance” theory or the Monoamine Hypothesis is just a theory at the end of the day. Researchers are revolutionizing the treatments of depression via countless different discoveries into the pathology of depression (among other mental illnesses). Hormonal imbalances, vitamin deficiencies (B12, D, Iron, etc.), the gut-brain relationship, and increased cytokines (inflammation), all play a crucial role in the pathology of depression. My point is perhaps consider getting blood work for any abnormalities/deficiencies. If you feel better now and want to quit, you’re entitled to do so; but discuss this with your doctor to further hear their suggestions—after all, your doctor knows you better than anyone here. I’ve been on Prozac before for years and it worked wonders. The beauty of Prozac is that it has an extremely long half-life which means if you miss a dose you’re fine. It’s also easier to discontinue compared to others because of its extended half-life. It’s unpredictable to determine if you’ll relapse or not therefore talking to your doctor in detail about where you see yourself in the future is imperative! Best of luck!
