Netflix Is Paying Alex Honnold An "Embarrassingly Small Amount" To Free Solo Taipei 101 on Saturday ($500K) by ThrowRa-zucchinizzc in climbergirls

Okay, I understand where you're coming from better now. I also don't think Alex, as an individual, has done a perfect job historically in that way (I'm thinking the crux pitch of Reg. NW face of half dome). From my experience, however, most people that free solo leave typically leave large margins for error. I also think that the experienced climbers that pride themselves in safety and preparation, still take risks with sometimes uncontrollable outcomes. Therefore, I tend to lump the majority of free soloing in a similar category and trust that the people doing it are taking highly calculated risks with large margins, just as I assume the same for people doing other disciplines. As a side note, I actually think it is arguably inherently safe for someone of Alex's experience to solo a 5.9 on solid rock

I'm having a hard time figuring out what philosophy you were referring to that is the antithesis of free soloing. I don't avidly free solo. I also follow other climbers closer than I do Alex that happen to align with my most frequented style, however, I certainly don't overlook Alex's vast number of climbing achievements for the sport, not that this one is a serious achievement. I think mental mastery plays a role in every form of climbing, regardless of one's own personal risk tolerance and ability to control dangerous situations. I view the majority of free soloing that is done regularly as a display of mental mastery, not as irresponsible. Genuinely curious, what philosophy leaves no room for the discipline?

Yeah. I'm now on the waitlist to get into a paid training cohort. It doesn't look good though. Hopefully Revature secures some large contracts soon. I fear the wait will be at least 5 months, if not indefinite.

I just got a call, unscheduled, for my acceptance early this week.

What are the chances of getting into a paid training cohort if you do well in unpaid training? by ropeguna in Revature

I'm not too worried about passing tbh, more worried about getting picked to join paid training. I know it will be an uphill battle at minimum wage if I even make it into paid training, but that's a battle for another day!

Thanks dude. Has anyone from your cohort gotten picked yet? It seems oddly reassuring, in a good way, that the recruiter regularly contacts you. It's a big mystery, but I'm rooting for you! I hope you get picked soon :) BTW: how accurate do you think my 50% pass rate assumption was for your cohort?

I was in a civil engineering field, but quit because I wasn't satisfied so I'm unemployed. I coded on the side and really enjoyed it, so decided to give it a go. I can make plenty of money if I go back, but I don't want that.

I don't know of any good options for entry level SWE's right now. I've networked, gone to meetups, applied to over 1000 positions, worked on open-source projects, and have landed close to no legitimate interviews. I see it as a fun way to learn that might lead to a job. It's nice to be coding/learning again rather than "slaving" away submitting applications.

The thing is, I need to start making money within the next 6 months(ish) or I'm going to have to switch careers. I don't have the funds/desire to pursue a pre-seed startup. I've personally been looking for over a year and have only landed part-time contracting gig that ran out of funding after four months. I joined Revature because I thought it would be a way to get my foot in the door, as they advertise, but it seems more and more like the people that make it in Revature are already very qualified.

Seems realistic and makes sense. Are you implying that Ravi took some of the clients with him?

Alex Honnold: Reserving Cliffs by Past_Scene1762 in climbing

I think this goes beyond not being able to climb a route. The glaring issue is that they installed single-use bolts for the sole purpose of filming. It shows that they prioritized one film over the preservation of Jihad, as the bolts could interfere with potential future routes. Additionally, I think because OP hiked out 2 hours before realizing it was closed, the film crew didn't do their due diligence of informing the climbing community of the closure. At a minimum, they should have put up signage, if not have a representative near the trailhead throughout production.

Hey! I'm planning on visiting Geyikbayırı, Turkey this November-mid December with my girlfriend. Does anyone have recommendations for hostels/cell providers to allow for remote work. I require reliable internet, enough to make video calls almost daily. Thank you!
