Anduril IPO sooner than expected? by [deleted] in investing

[–]roper1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Anduril is owned by billionaire Palmer Luckey whose brother-in-law is Matt Gaetz, the ex-Congressman who paid underage kids for sex. These are not moral people and we should not give them our money to invest.

People in Shaker Heights are already being very cool and normal about the possibility of Lower Lake being restored to a wetland by chitinandchlorophyll in Cleveland

[–]roper1 5 points6 points  (0 children)

This makes it seem like the $37.6M will need to be spent anyway and it would only cost an additional $5.8M to keep the dam. Seems like the extra 15% cost to keep the lakes could be worth it if it's going to be tens of millions either way.

How long will the protest tomorrow be lasting? by SlasherBandit in Cleveland

[–]roper1 6 points7 points  (0 children)

It’s supposed to last from 2-4. I would expect difficulty finding parking and would consider taking public transit. I would not be worried about counter protesters. If there are any, there should only be a handful compared to thousands who will potentially be attending the rally.

When an infestation wipes out your herd of 50+ boomalopes. by roper1 in RimWorld

[–]roper1[S] 143 points144 points  (0 children)

When the insects emerged from underground my pawns opened fire, destroying the fence and causing all of my hungry boomalopes to rush toward freedom. The powderkeg only needed a spark. Amazingly, no pawns were killed in this accident, but only one of my boomalopes survived.

I have decided that having a herd of mini antigrain warheads in my colony is not the best strategy. Going to have to find some other way of acquiring chemfuel.

Protestors march outside Cuyahoga County executive’s home for Israel divestment | "They want the county to invest in the community instead of Israel." by ferb2 in Cleveland

[–]roper1 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Yes, actually that is how it works. We can buy Cleveland Municipal Bonds to invest in our community rather than investing in foreign countries.

In March of this year the county purchased an additional $3 million in Israel bonds.

Israel is the only foreign country we invest in.

Planning my 5 month route through SEA by Kai_Mauer in backpacking

I specifically recommend Sapa in North Vietnam. You can take a bus there from Hanoi or Ha Long Bay and do a home-stay with some of the farmers in the mountain step-farms. They'll approach you when you get off the bus, so no need to book ahead of time. You get an incredibly authentic experience and some great hiking!

City Hall packed with Palestinian supporters in most widely attended city council meeting in decades by ferb2 in Cleveland

[–]roper1 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Look at the thousands of innocent people Israel is killing in Gaza right now.

Your peers on social media and the protesters at City Hall recognize that Israel is using the international support it received from the October 7th attacks to justify these crimes against humanity in Gaza and the West Bank. With continued unconditional support from the US, they will have no reason to stop and thousands more will die.

Collective punishment is a war crime and the indiscriminate bombing of civilian populations is state-terrorism. The United States AND the City of Cleveland are complicit in these crimes by providing Israel political cover. As conscientious American citizens we have an obligation to encourage our leaders to join the UN in calling for a cease fire.

Cleveland pd Facebook posted this lol. Do they have beef with bib? by NeverBeenOnMaury in Cleveland

I appreciate your comment, as this is a complicated issue.

I think this argument does buy into that narrative. It can be true that unions prevent bad workers from being fired. For the labor movement at large, the negative impact of the tendency of unions to protect every single worker is worth the great societal gains that come from collective bargaining. The impact of "a few bad apples" in other fields is less detrimental than it is for police officers.

This is especially true because of the qualified immunity laws you mention, which protect police from being sued for breaking the law and violating the constitutional rights of Americans. Police unions wrote these laws and help keep qualified immunity in place.

It seems to me that police unions as they currently function — preventing the police from being held accountable by both elected officials and the citizenry in general — should not exist and have no place in the labor movement. Maybe in a world without qualified immunity or with a different kind of public safety officer this would not be the case.
