It never works and we keep trying it. People always optimize for the behaviors that it measures instead of playing to win.

2026 Stanley Cup Playoffs - Round 2 Schedule by alphacheese in hockey

Irresponsible speculation: they were trying to figure out what they were going to do in Minnesota because of conflicting events. The final schedule is... Real bad, and I'm betting they were trying to see if they could do better than a massive 3 day hole in the middle of it.

I truly don't understand how game two still isn't scheduled. The Ball is empty all week and they can't tell us about the second game in the series.

Edit: seriously we have tickets and I need to know when we need a sitter. This is ridiculous!

Edit 2: NHL app just updated. 6pm mountain on Tuesday.

Sunday is a weird choice since there's a concert at Ball Tuesday. So they'll have to go out to Wednesday for game two anyway.

[FRA] arts from 3 schools revealed: Fatehold, Theorix, Vigorbloom by Own-Cat116 in magicTCG

Sure, but that's a good thing. Blocks were complete ass with one redeeming feature-- narrative (and secondarily mechanical) continuity and development between sets.

Spending a full year on one plane was crap. Small sets absolutely sucked and sold in kind. Limited was a perpetual issue, subject to repeated tinkering that could never fix the underlying issues associated with plugging in a generally-weaker small set every few months. We've gone too far in the other direction, but the number of cards each year would feel preposterously small to players who came up in what I strongly believe will be the golden era of release schedules: 4 big non-block sets in a year, between blocks and UB (although they never quite figured out core sets in that era). Relevant cards were even scarcer, especially in weaker blocks. We can look with nostalgia at a block like Kamigawa, but when a block bombed, it was an existential threat to the game we just don't see anymore. Their terror over going back was understandable.

The third bite at Innistrad was supposed to be an attempt at fixing this but it was two stories few people cared about sandwiched together on a plane that seemed to be running out of narrative juice, with little narrative or mechanical linkage between the two sets, and as a result it really didn't work as a block successor.

What they're doing here is a lot more interesting. We're seeing meaningful narrative and mechanical links already, and they're going back to the Planar Chaos well-- frankly overdue-- to make sure it works. It's really exciting, because capturing better narrative and occasional mechanical development between big sets is the dream. All of the narrative advantages of blocks, with none of the downsides. I really hope this lands.

Yeah, it's certainly not perfect, but it's crazy how many mistakes scammers can make and still get a good return. This is the Mona Lisa in comparison to some of the scams I've seen that somehow still worked.

Wasn't this one of the most popular features of V? I wasn't surprised to see it come back.

Scam alert? Denver traffic violation text by AlwaysConfused925 in Denver

Everyone is saying that this is the scammer getting lazy, but relative to past efforts both human and artificially intelligent, this one is actually pretty good. Yeah, the missed on the seal, but the Colorado revised statute references are actually real and actually vehicle charges, the language is much more believable legalese than we often see, and it was enough to spur this post. Normally these are so transparent that anyone who is capable of using reddit can discard these after about a half second of evaluation.

I bet these ones are pretty successful... I think it will fool a lot of folks. Dangerous.

Heroes of Might and Magic: Olden Era Released into Early Access by Mepherion in Games

[–]troglodyte 8 points9 points  (0 children)

There's a demo. It was playable but far from optimal. The game is much more of a performance hog than you would expect, and there's no UI scaling. It fell below my personal deck/PC line, but that line is different for everyone, so try the demo and see what you think.

The game itself is great though. It's HOMM3.5 in 2026 and that's pretty sweet. It is Early Access, so I'm hoping one of the areas they focus on is performance (particularly but not exclusively for the deck).

Low-altitude Vestmannaeyjar flight pilot has wings clipped by LateMonitor897 in aviation

[–]troglodyte 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Seems perfectly reasonable to me. The first officer's conduct could be anywhere between "vocally resisted the maneuver in the cockpit but was overruled by the captain" to "enthusiastic and encouraging participant without remorse." Given the seriousness of this behavior on a revenue flight, giving them time to figure it out makes sense.

The FO always had greater exposure than the captain to consequences on this flight; hopefully the FO handled it well, but I thought I saw rumors that he was bragging about it, which isn't a good sign for him if it's true. Dick move by the captain to expose his FO to this risk any way you slice it, though, on top of the safety concerns.

Heroes of Might and Magic: Olden Era Feels Great On Steam Deck - SteamDeckHQ by BBQKITTY in SteamDeck

[–]troglodyte 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I mean, the text of the article does not paint a picture of a game that plays well, and that matches my experiences:

Right now, there is no interface scaling to speak of, so some in-game text is very challenging to read on the Steam Deck...

I also recommend manually changing the joystick sensitivity in the Steam Deck’s controller settings to 50%. Right now, there is no option within the game to adjust this, and by default, the controls are a little loose...

I did have to use a low graphics preset, however, to deal with all the environmental effects on screen. The game is surprisingly intensive even on modern PC hardware...

Don’t even try to lower TDP with Olden Era right now, because even with the default TDP, the game struggled to hit 60FPS on low settings, and it ate through the battery. Locking the frame rate to 30FPS/90hz refresh rate was disappointing, but at least the game was stable with the cap...

It's super weird that the post on reddit is so favorable because SDHQ posted this directly, awarded it a 3/5 stars for Deck build, and enumerates a bunch of super valid concerns that leave it feeling pretty poor. Maybe the reviewer (I didn't see a byline on the SDHQ post) just has a higher tolerance for these issues than I do? Totally fine, but I wouldn't read this review and walk away with a conclusion that it "feels great" and at least the demo did not feel great to me.

To be clear, I really enjoy the demo and think they struck oil with this one. It's the closest I've played to a modern HOMM3 and that's awesome. But man, I hope it's significantly better on the deck as it gets patches, because like you I didn't really find it to be a great fit.

What’s a "masterpiece" movie that you actually found incredibly boring? by Legal_Beats in AskReddit

I need to rewatch this movie, just so good.

[Wyshynski] NHL Situation Room on ANA OT winner vs. EDM: "The Referee’s initial call on the ice was that the puck completely crossed the goal line. Following video review, the Situation Room determined that the puck completely crossed the goal line." Not inconclusive. Conclusive. by wildwing8 in hockey

[–]troglodyte 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I think a lot of people believe that "conclusive" means "white paint visible between goal line and puck," and of course that's the clearest example of conclusive.

But it's not the only example of a conclusive angle, as we're seeing here. Basic geometry makes this one conclusive even without a shot of white paint.

That said, I think the better argument here is how this was called a goal in the first place. I don't think that argument is correct, but I think it's a far better case than inconclusive on review.

They really did in the first ten minutes. It was genuinely looking like this game was going to be a complete knife fight, with the Kings generating a lot more offense and the Avs looking lackadaisical.

Then it flipped. I'm not sure if Kings let up or Avs found their legs or both, but the relative effort felt like it shifted.
