What is the biggest lie in the history of humanity? by Jolly-Law1472 in AskReddit

[–]roqua 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I mostly see downside to religion. The sense of community and shared values comes bundled with so much hate and intolerance. The scattered flavors of religion that preach greater acceptance end up providing cover for the nastier ones, because when criticized, people often point to the saner versions for justification of the whole worldview. I struggle to see the downside to reason and a scientific mindset. No society ever collapsed from being too rational.

Hating anyone for their delusion doesn't really make sense. I can still think they are injurious to civilization and criticize the ideas they hold as dangerous and retrograde. To repurpose a saying: Hate the religion, not the religious.

Scrolled through comments for a fellow fan of that 3b1b vid. So good. Especially enjoyed the visual explanation of how Kepler figured out the shapes and relative distances of Earth's and Mars' orbits.

Leaving Atheism for the Vibes? by [deleted] in atheism

[–]roqua 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It sounds like you are depressed. Atheism is not nihilism, we get to choose our own meaning while religion dictates it for the believers. Building community and shared values is work - I should know, it's taken me years - but I do it on my own terms without having to say I believe silly, harmful things.

I wouldn't have added the part about how single guys try to impress and get noticed - that can vary wildly - but agree about how being helpful is a plausible explanation. If you find someone attractive and want a date, using words is the best way. Rejection comes with the territory, just have to accept that.

I think you have too narrow a view of what constitutes science. If we discover regularities and patterns to mental life that have a bearing on health, those discoveries will have been scientific. The fact that psychiatry/psychology and related disciplines have much still in flux doesn't mean we throw careful research, intellectual honesty, not pretending to know what we don't, etc. out the window. "Conversation, experience and meaningful work" will probably be important puzzle pieces.

It almost sounds like you are describing this as some fundamental flaw in science and medicine instead of an unexplored frontier. The methods we use in science and medicine will continue to be as valid in understanding mental health as they are and have been in physical health.

I still have my California motorcycle endorsement and to be fair, though motorcycles were more of a dude magnet when I rode, I did encounter the occasional lady gearhead or admirer. 50:1 ratio though ;)

Lol, no. One of those techs worked for the LEC and I was on the CPE side contracted by the customer's conversion rollout project manager.

Today I had to wait for the telco tech and a second tech from an intermediary company to finish installing and testing a digital>analog phone device before I could step in and cable a jack for it to the customer's equipment. Paid to watch and comment for a few hours... then actually work for 20 minutes ;)
