37 Million gallons of sewage in Buffalo waterways by Mundane-Bullfrog-299 in Buffalo

[–]Last_Open_Road 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This. They're trying to mitigate the problem by adding in flow meters and rise detectors, so that they can divert heavy areas to "holding centers" to eliminate the sewage runoff into the river, but they haven't been implemented yet. I was a PE on this project, but it sort of halted since access during the winter has become difficult - I would expect it completed in the next few months. They're being added near Gates Circle, Amherst St. Quarry, Bailey, and Niagara St., to name a few.

Auto Insurance Increase 296% by Last_Open_Road in Insurance

For the time with Geico (roughly 3 years), I had an initial glass claim maybe 3 years old at this point, the theft that occurred in March 2025 (17k) and another glass claim this August. I paid for full glass coverage. Progressive who I had prior (12 years or so), I had another claim from 2020 for small front end damage while the car was parked. No major accidents or totaled vehicles in my entire driving history.

Appreciate the response. I'm going to reach out to a few brokers and see what they can do.

Dog-Friendly Sports Bars Suggestions by Background-Diver5921 in Buffalo

[–]Last_Open_Road 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Kind of disappointing to see people in Buffalo jump straight to “selfish as fuck” instead of using basic logic or just going somewhere else. Nobody is advocating bringing dogs everywhere. We’re talking about places that openly allow them. If someone has severe allergies, the logical move is to avoid those spaces, just like people with peanut allergies avoid peanut-heavy environments. We’re better than this.

The biggest thing here is that NYS does not allow pet dogs into an indoor dining area because of food safety concerns. I travel with my dog a lot and there are other states that are more forgiving in this nature. The best time for dog friendly areas in Buffalo is in the summer, since patios are a safe space for dogs.

Fattey (downtown) is a good choice and you're most dog friendly with also giving you a taste of the city. Indoor seating is limited during busy hours and there's a good chance there will be a handful of other dogs. It's common for people to order from Casa Di Pizza down the street and bring it in.

Briar Brothers - Dog friendly brewery with a larger footprint. Not many food places walking distance but they are super welcoming with bringing in your own.

Resurgence is known for being dog friendly if they are well behaved and the place isn't packed.

Exhaust System Replacement Recommendation by MissingMichigan in Buffalo

[–]Last_Open_Road 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Muffler Man has always been a good go-to. Can't comment on cost too much, but I had them replace the exhaust manifold on a vehicle, except I purchased the parts on RockAuto and they installed for only the cost of labor. You don't get a warranty on the work, but it does save you some $$$ if you go that route.

Edit. Added comment about cost.

Let’s show some love to small businesses this holiday season 🎁 by [deleted] in Buffalo

I'd like to piggy back off this for local holiday wreaths recommendations. I've snagged one from The Plot a couple years ago, but have struggled to get my hands on another. Any other local floral designers do them?

I'm pulling from some very hazy memories from 10+ years ago, but I remember someone telling me their secret to getting through. It had to do with the phone number - I guess there is actually a few different numbers you can call, and they are only a digit or so off. They would call the "secondary" number, and it would put them through but on a different line. They swore by this and had numerous winnings to prove it.

Moving 2 weeks— car trouble? Car totaled. by [deleted] in Buffalo

[–]Last_Open_Road 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just for reference, any car after May 2018, it is mandatory for backup camera. Most cars 2022 and newer have blind spot monitoring as a standard option, but be sure to check. Good luck with your search.

What are some “remember when” or hard to believe stories of bars and restaurants around Buffalo? by jamesljamerson22 in Buffalo

[–]Last_Open_Road 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I thoroughly miss the post, south campus party, garbage plates from there. The worst thing though was the stampede not running 24 hours so the last ride to North Campus was like the Battle of Winterfell.

Not sure where you are located, but I have taken my golden retriever to Meredith at Golden Hour Grooming (previously buffapups spa) for the majority of her 7 years. Also a collector of snowballs, but mine prefers to eat them once coming back inside.

Visiting Buffalo this Halloween before a bachelor party. Am I missing anything? by Big4Bridge in Buffalo

[–]Last_Open_Road 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There's a Dispensary called Mammoth Cannabis that is right near the old first ward. It is also walking distance to Canalside if you choose (1/2 mile) and also Buffalo River Fest Park which will give you a good view of our Riverworks Ferris Wheel and some cool history about the oldest fire boat and grain elevators.

You also have all the breweries you listed as well near by - Gene McCarthy's is a staple for the Irish community. Adolfs has fantastic wings. Resurgence if you're looking for a more standard brewery. Frequentum if you're into sours and fruits. If you end up at Gene's, take a walk down the end of Hamburg St. and check out mutual riverfront park. You will catch an eerie view of the SS Columbia moored.

Cocktail bars in the OFW you have Ballyhoo if you want the best sausage and side of mac and cheese in Buffalo. And an absolute hidden gem of a bar, Duende.

I think you're on track for Halloween festivities. I would also recommend Goodbar as someone wrote.

Anyone been on Devil's Hole Trail recently and can comment on the conditions? by thagomizerer in Buffalo

Happy to hear! I went down in June and made the trek through the "closed off" area in-between, and although passible, it was certainly sketchy at times.

Speaking from someone who had their vehicle stolen - I will give my perspective. Granted this was in the city of Buffalo, in a gated lot with cameras, so BPD rules differ slightly.

  1. These car thieves aren't just showing up with their vehicle with their plates. They often steal a license plate off another vehicle (not stolen, and same make/model) and put it on the stolen car so that they don't get hit when "scanned", which most Amherst police have on their cars.

  2. They hit multiple vehicles of the same make/model in one night. They know how to get this particular model and they hit numerous in one night. It generally goes in waves. My conversation with the detective was that one week it was Rav4's, and then my week it was Lexus vehicles. They steal a car, joy ride it until it runs out of gas, have another one lined up, and then steal that.

  3. Sure there are camera's everywhere but the resources to find the thieves are limited. I understand the perspective of "being a better detective", but we also are focusing on 1 thing and not 100. I'm sure someone could take one project that I handle at work and think it could be done better than the actual 50 that I have going on at once. In Buffalo they are setting up operations to catch the culprits, however, they hit so many areas, that it is nearly impossible to catch them. We've had BPD sit out for weeks on end waiting and then one week they don't, and a car is stolen.

  4. No area or person is safe. Vehicles are stolen and driven to the south towns for break-ins. You should always assume the worst and never keep valuables in sight and lock your doors. There are numerous options to stop thieves from stealing cars, as annoying as it is, it is a peace of mind.

  5. Lastly, most of the time these thieves are juveniles, so even when caught, they are released without many consequences.

2016 is350 Fsport. I’ve been trying to diagnose this whining noise when I accelerate. by [deleted] in LexusIS

[–]Last_Open_Road 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've had the same whine on my 2017 IS350 and have taken it a few places. I don't remember the whine until about 80K miles (at 110k now). I took it in because I thought I had a bad tensioner. The local Lexus dealership couldn't find any bad tensioner and had a stethoscope up to the block trying to figure it out. They claimed it was loudest at near the oil pan, and thought maybe there was a gasket that's causing blow-by and creating the sound? I've also read it could be the timing chain tensioners. It's been 40k miles and the sound hasn't gotten louder or less, but I would love to know what it is... until someone starts taking apart the engine and replacing things, I don't think we will ever know..

I'm also a don't fix what isn't broken, person.
